An older video I made about dot filters.. sorry it's not full high res.. but I show how I used oils by dot filtering to create an interesting effect on my SU-152 and break up a bland patch of bland green. If there is more interest I will do a new video at full high res.. just ask.
Full series on the SU-152 is here:

I have a bit of a confession to make... I really can't pick a single video of yours that I can honestly say is my favorite, I do like them all. I can say that I've learned quite a bit from watching your videos and that I do like a lot (you may have noticed my comments on this video). Thanks for what you do and yes I would be very happy to say I'd like to be in your drawing for the half track.

Ta much Harry, another tequnic, tecknic, OH! another way to smudge a panel to add to things to do when building. Well done again.

Harry. Just found your channel and really enjoying your tutorials. I'm building a 1:24 Hurricane at the moment and I can see where this technique would be handy for it. Thanks for taking time to put these up online. Dan

Very cool tutorial mate. I'm currently building the old Tamiya M48 kit and wanted to experiment with trying out the oil dot filter technique. Cheers!

Awesome always wondered how to do this thanks for taking the time to show us your tricks!

+AltCtrlFreak thanks.. not hard to do once you know the proceedure.. I also show a similar method in the Hetzer videos using Ammo Mig enamels

+Harry Houdini did you apply a gloss coat before putting on the dots? I've got a Jagdpanzer I'd like to try this technique on.
@HarryHoudiniModels
@HarryHoudiniModels 8 лет назад
+AltCtrlFreak It is best to seal the layer first.. I had used Tamiya rattle can lacquer on that Su-152 and that stuff sets hard so did not need a clear coat. So yes a gloss or matt clear coat is usually needed before doing dot filters.

It's a type of printer as I recall ;-) I was going to ask about a gloss coat between the streaking and dot filter but I see that you've already answered that question. Thanks for the class :-)

That's a great technique! Have you ever tried Tamiya's weathering master ? It's a sort of makeup compact sort of deal but I think there are several different sets, but the one I picked up, set " B " , has snow , soot & rust and comes with a tool that has a sponge and brush on it ... Anyways , enjoying the videos, hope you can do a video about Tamiya putty , and different body filler techniques sometime..

Yes mate if you look at the Panzer II videos and the Skoda ones on weathering Tracks links to a Metal look.. I show and use the Tamiya makeup weathering products.

Is this process done over top a clear coat or just a top the paint layer? I ask because if you brush thinner over the dots, how does the thinner not hurt the paint below?
@HarryHoudiniModels
@HarryHoudiniModels 8 лет назад
If you alternate acrylic then enamel and let each layer cure before doing the next, then the relative thinners wont affect the preceeding layer, because they each have a different chemistry. If in doubt run a thin clear coat between layers.

I don't have oil based acrylics, unless my cheap testers colors are oil based, it doesn't say on the little jars... But I really wanna give this technique a try... I just cleared the lower hull, the upper hull and the turret as well... Will this process work over the clear coat without the thinner affecting the clear or the green below... Lol.. I must be getting on your nerves with all these questions
@HarryHoudiniModels
@HarryHoudiniModels 8 лет назад
You need to seal the lower layer. I used Tamiya rattle can lacquer in my example which when cured is very hard and wont be affected by an oil based thinner or paint over the top. Unless you are using Tamiya Rattle cans then you need a clear coat to seal the base colour before dot filtering.

Great video - one question how long do the oils talk to dry? Can you varnish over afterwards is I'm mainly making 1\56 models for wargames
@HarryHoudiniModels
@HarryHoudiniModels 6 лет назад
The drying rate depends on the solvent you use... the Tamiya enamel thinner is formulated to dry quick.. for me in a few hours on a warm day... however when I used an odourless thinner it was almost a week to gas out and dry. Same with turpentine which took ages to dry on my Stug. But once dry yes you can apply an acrylic sealer like Future or Humbrol clear or a Lacquer spray such as Tamiya clear.. however enamel over enamel runs the risk of reactivating the filter and causing paint runs.
