Ironically, I was in an awful art slump while I was working on this video (How fitting that it was during a tutorial video HAHA) so this was supposed to be finished weeks ago, but I was struggling like crazy to be happy with anything I drew. I'm feeling much better now luckily ^^ It happens to all of us, and while I still need to teach myself not to feel guilty when I have a few days off to recollect myself, I'm very grateful that my audience is always reminding me that it's okay to take a little longer if I need to T___T Thank you!!
I'll never forget the day you complimented me on my character facial expressions Emilyyyy. (Insert Shojo girl crying face). Don't worry, art slump or not, your videos are always a source of inspiration for others even when you're taking breaks for yourself ☺️
When the combination cry face shows, it hits real hard. The power of combining Shounen and Shoujo manga crying face is too powerful. Also, I actually learn a lot, especially about how artists depict character's personality through different expression for the same emotion/state of mind.
I swear the stoic characters and their emotions just hit me HARD like Giyu Tomioka, in the manga when he smiles it is so rare so when you see him smile it just goes BAM right through the heart!
anatomy is like me trying how to fly.... my brain just cant take it. lol can you critique my art vid pls. it just my never improves even if i try so hard
@@pogz1 Have you tried to draw basic geometric forms? drawing cilinders at any perspective and volume helps a lot as well. i recommend you to draw gestures everyday too !! just a humble advice c(ò w ó)/
*furiously takes notes* Bless you Emily thank you for this video ! If you do decide to make more videos like this I would absolutely love one on the way you draw eyes I think they're GORGEOUS dude~
I am being humble when I am telling you that I am the most powerful strongest coolest smartest most famous greatest funniest Y*uTub3r of all time! That's the reason I have multiple girlfriends and I show them off on my ch*nnel all the time! Bye bye ul
the way you draw emotions has always been something i admire about your style, you have a real skill for conveying emotions simply with the face of a cartoon, i'm not very good at that myself, so it's nice to get tips from someone who's so good at it!
Hi Emily! Thank you so so so so so much for making this. I actually use your drawings as inspiration, and I love your videos so much. I remember that video that you made about you being a teacher, and you met a couple of kids who drew a lot. I actually wanted to use you as inspiration because of your amazing drawing skills. Ever since I discovered your channel, I thought I discovered a whole new world of drawing. Now, before I found your channel I always criticized my own drawings. Because my friends would draw so much better. Here are some of the stuff they would say “How about drawing the eyes the normal way?” Or “Ha, i’am so much more better.” It really hurt my feelings, because sometimes, my friends would call me “Crybaby” because I cry so much. And my parents would be embarrassed by telling me to. It just hurts… but drawing feels like therapy, it makes me feel so.. happy! Of course, I still compare. But, I draw as good as I can.
I like it how Emirichu is not saying “this is what you need to do”, “these are the rules to doing this”, or “you need to do this a specific/certain way.” No Emirichu is not saying any of this, she is just giving us some advice to making more expressions, and telling us a bit how she draws, and that we shouldn’t do something thing like everyone else does, but that we should use other people’s style/ how they do their things so that we may get an idea on how we should it ourselves.
Who else thinks that this was the most helpful video on characters emotions or expression found on RU-vid history! Like gosh you might think RU-vid has alot of videos but not all are helpful like theres not a single video like yours far far in RU-vid! Please please do more videos on your art style we just adore and love it! Press the like on who ever agreees . Cuz this has to be the most explained and easiest understandable and fastest and fun video i have seen gosh thanks so so much ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Nah, always have a fan when you're about to break up. It gives a more dramatic feel and not only that, you feel like you're elegantly ugly crying instead of just ugly crying lol
So what I got is, when the character is confused, mad or something that makes the character’s eyes look more closed is when the eyes should be drawn sharper and darker. Also what I got is that when the pupils look more dilated, the eyelashes are darker. In Emily’s way of drawing, pupil sizes, shapes and sharpness effects the emotions
this is actually very helpful, I’m in a period with my art where I’m confident enough to add detail without messing it all up, but I’m also not very experienced to make a good facial expression. Thanks Emily!
I usually unconsciously make the same expression that I'm drawing sometimes I force myself to cry when I wanna make a crying expression Extra but its fun :3
We need more of these, this has actually been really helpful. I recently took an interest in drawing and I've always struggled with two things: facial expression and hair.
Yes those are both hard to draw And I mainly draw Splatoon characters and their hair is VERY hard (except maybe the regular inkling girl, regular octoling girl and regular inkling boy hair, those are pretty easy haha)
Why is this video kinda underrated? It’s 900k views which is good but not as much as the other videos sadly, I really appreciate your drawing tips, they’re always very helpful! Thank you for posting!
Funnily enough I don’t listen to others tutorials but this was more helpful, maybe because i love watching your videos and sometimes random outro’s with also random ads 🤣
Emirichu: Don't expect this to be professional or anything! Also Emirichu: delivers a reasonable and well done lesson on basic expression drawing, with some helpful tips and tricks
Expressions is something I've been trying to practice a lot as of recently so this was a HUGE help!! Your art style is so adorable and watching this video gives me so much motivation! Cant wait for more of these!!
holy hell, one year later and this video is still the best video i've found on youtube about this subject! and im new to Emirichu so thats saying something!
This is hands-down one of the best tutorials I've seen for manga facial expressions. Excellent work, this has been hugely helpful to me! Thank you for sharing your insight!
what i notice in mangas (mostly anime) the hair gives a bit of expression too! like if the character is sad, the hair becomes flat and droopy alittle, without losing the initial shape, and if they are happy it starts to bounce, and become really lively! thats just what i notice XD
Theres alot of videos on RU-vid plus article online but they teach us and tell us emotions and expression not how to draw them, for example they would teach us expression like happy, joyfull , exited , mindblown etc they would explain when and why these expression occur and would tell us to practice taking reference from anime sheets, but your videos actually explains how to draw these expressions, everyone know youll be smiling when your happy but the way you point out eyebrows, eyes shape and mouth was way way different and helpful. And i tried making a sheet of expression but my face was straight and it looked dull so thanks to you , i can follow your sheet and draw my character! Who else agress
ngl this helped my face expressions a lot, usually with expressions (for example im making a super happy face) i just make the eyes a big bigger but it never gets any better, ty for the helpful guide!
I just love how she draws hair, like, she draws it so simplistically and so minimally but it always ends up so gorgeous just by itself and meanwhile there's me that needs to add layers upon layers of shading just to make up for how crappily I draw mine TwT
I know its been 2 years and we aren’t likely getting more Emi tutorials. But this helped me a lot! I absolutely adore and admire your art style and i also have a ton of inspiration from anime and manga for wanting to start doing art! Faces has always been a week point and years ago I gave up because I became discouraged because at the time I didn’t have any sort of artistic inspiration or any particular art style I wanted to emulate, plus I was always given the impression that “copying” other artists styles was a bad thing when, much like you said, finding your style isn’t a journey you start from nothing.
Me too, and crooked, twisted twig stick figures at that! /;p Stringing English words together is one of the few things I can do; occasionally coherently, but not often!
Some extra tips that I've heard: 1. Looking up references of actual human faces also helps if you wanna work on where everything is placed and how different parts of the face react to each other. 2. If you have an idea specific way a character looks, make style guide and take notes on how you want everything to look. This helps with keeping everything consistent.
Of all the facial expression videos I've seen so far in life, this one really helped bring perspective & sparked more confidence & inspiration in being able to do it. Thanks for the video.
You, lavendertowne, and Ethan Becker are always my go to's when it comes to art advice. You guys really focus on the tools that can make your art great and it's easy to understand! Thank you for existing!
I know I'm late but some art advise that I taught myself is eyelids. A wide eyed expression would have the eyelids more down and less visible while a calmer expression would have the eyelids more above the eye. (I hope this make sence)
Something you said in this video is honestly one of the biggest things that I dont see a lot of artists really say and that's the whole "look at how other sets of media does theirs" most of how I figured out art was due to me seeing one of my favorite artists making something neat and I go "damn I really like how they draw eyes" or "wow the way they can draw expressions" and try to mimic it. I know copying 1:1 ain't cool but trying to mimic in your own way is a neat thing to try and do to learn how to do so in your own way.
And that is how you spend 9 minutes educating people about expressions in much greater, more USEFUL detail than any how-to-draw I have ever encountered in my life. You deserve a trophy.
I am especially impressed with the points about re-using the eyebrows for more expressions, as well as the point about characters with different personalities expressing their emotions differently. Stuff I never see other how-tos touch on.
its amazing how other people do things flawlessly yet mines not even i struggle endlessly.. even though.. ill continue pushing on no matter what.. even though my art really suck, all i need is a harsh and honest critique.. even though itll hurt.
I think you have to tilt the mouth a little and give the eyes a more distant/loopy look if you want em to be high Pfft I can't believe I just wrote that.
I love watching animes and reading mangas because of the expressions. So exaggerated, it is so fun so watch, i laugh and feel the characters' emotions and you can connect to them too. I really enjoy your drawing too, in your videos too, you're so talented. 😃 I didn't draw much, only very young around 10 years old and stopped so i'm not really good lol but you're really inspiring. Keep up the amazing work emily! 😊
It was really useful to see emotional expression "decoded" like that. Now i have several points of reference to keep track of emotions when looking at art (eye shape, eyebrows, etc.), rather than just seeing "happy goofball" or "sad stoic". I haven't really done drawing since primary school. This video may give me the confidence to take it up again. :)
aaahhh you're being humble! your ability to convey emotion HIT HARD you know? I keep crying when I see your animatics, sometimes it takes my breath EVEN when i don't watch the anime related to it
