One of my RU-vid friends just got his VP and he is complaining about crunchy shifting. So, I thought I'd make a video showing how I shift when I drive. I'm not an expert and I'm open to any recommendations to improve my driving and stop any bad habits. I hope you guys like these kinds of videos!

Sorry I was gone for a bit. It usually takes around two weeks for someone who's never driven a stick shift to get the hang of it. But you should be able to handle a manual on a straight, empty road the same day. Good luck!

I had a 2004 STI for a few years. I noticed whenever I waved at another STI, they waved back. But when I waved at a WRX owner, they ignored me completely.

If I am not distracted I wave to everyone. I get ignored too by VA owners. I assume some still don’t know that VB is the new WRX or they hate it. Few might say “he drives an ugly wrx he doesn’t deserve a wave” 😂

I mean I’d wave back from my WRX but on the inside I’m sayin that STI didn’t have to call me poor like that..

Love your videos! I do notice that during local area, you tend to shift from 1st to 2nd gear when rpm reaches 2K. You let the RPM dropped to 1K when you fully reengage. Then shift to 3rd gear when RPM back up to 2K, but this time you only let it dropped to 1.5K. This is the main thing I learn from your video. I always tend to shift to the next gear only after the RPM reach 3K... But base on your video and how smooth the shift were, I don't think 3K is necessary anymore. Thanks for showing me this!

That day, I made more videos of me shifting at different RPMs. Basically, the RPM changes depend on how fast you want to go, or if you're going up a hill or passing someone. I figured out that the key to shifting smoothly is finding the right balance between letting your foot off the clutch and pressing the gas. By listening to the engine, you can make the shift smoother with practice. It took me about two weeks to get used to it. I posted a short video of me shifting, but someone recommended doing a Heel/Toe shift to avoid burning the clutch. To be honest, I thought I was doing pretty good, but I don't want to show you my bad habits. I'll start doing more research on how to shift more safely and avoid prematurely burning out my clutch. This Sunday, I'm meeting up with some Subaru drivers, and I'll ask for recommendations on the best practices for making my clutch last longer and I’ll keep you posted 👍

It’s not that serious you just shift when you’re supposed to. Tbh driving stick is pretty simple and as soon as you’re driving the car you’ll understand more. Once you start looking at numbers like that you’re gonna freak yourself out just try it and you’ll see what I mean, also every car is different

@@DrivenDailyPOV Depends on the car, of course, or model year even. The tune sucks on 2015+ WRX's and the electronic throttle body leaves a lot of rev hang between 1st and 2nd gear. Possibly also due to the FA motor just behaving a little differently, it certainly has a different power band. Anyway, you can minimize or not have it hang by shifting between 2K-2.5K RPM, or if you're watching your boost gauge it's right before you hit any type of boost - better around town for gas anyway. There was a better positive shift closer to 3K-3.5K RPM in previous models with the EJ motor and a different stock tune from Subaru. Longer 1st gear for sure. I've had a 2007, 2013, and currently have a 2018. The 07 was modified so it was it's own animal, but the 2013 felt a lot more like the 07 than it does the 2018.

I'm exactly the same as you. Except I'm trying to kick the habit of having the clutch in at red lights. Was doing that for 25 years with other cars. Never damaged the clutch in those cars.
@DrivenDailyPOV
@DrivenDailyPOV Год назад
I've seen a lot of guys keeping their foot on the clutch at red lights. I was told that the clutch is like the brakes - the more you use it, the faster it wears out. But, like you said, people have been doing it for years, and nobody I know has had to replace their clutch because of it. I hope our clutches last for ever 😅

clutch is wearable item desained to be changed after 100k km. I see no benefit from holding the clutch, only negatives like hurting leg

The holding of the clutch is not “riding” the clutch or burning it out. Not harmful. Really personal preference. Many europeans swear by this method as being the safest in case you need to quickly maneuver. I tend to do it more when in traffic.
@drayke8886
@drayke8886 Год назад
@@PicNickPhoto you are actually wearing out a throwout bearing but slightly. But op said about holding clutch at red light, you are talking about stop and go. When on red light with 1st selected and brakes engaged driver may not hold the clutch all the way at all the time thus wearing the clutch prematurely Case and point I don't see a good reason to hold the clutch at red lights

I'm about to get a new WRX and have never driven manual. Do you think I would be able to make it home with it without any serious issue? I understand the difficulty of 1st to 2nd, but when you're going is it still challenging?

I’m in the same boat, getting one in the next two months. I’m thinking of asking the dealership to drive it home for me or transport the car because of how far away my house is.

You get yours yet? So far I had a 2020 and 2023 WRX. Drove both home after years and years of drivng a manual. Even then I only really played around in a parking lot like back in 2008 😂. If you haven’t picked one up just test drive it and head home, it’s easy.

When you are still rolling like 5-10 MPH, clutch fully depressed, do you have issues shifting into first? I find if Im not rolling slow enough it does NOT want to go into gear gently despite the clutch down im curious if its just me/indicative of an issue

@xXsomberXx

hey bro when you shift do you start adding gas once you reach the bite point
@DrivenDailyPOV
@DrivenDailyPOV 7 месяцев назад
@xXsomberXx Exactly, while I am holding the clutch at the biting point, I gently add some gas. Once it starts moving, I slowly release the clutch fully. It's all about finding that smooth balance between adding gas and releasing the clutch. The more you practice, the easier it gets and the faster you can do it spontaneously. Also, having a louder muffler and rolling down the window can make it easier.

@DrivenDailyPOV
@DrivenDailyPOV Год назад
I know, I'm not sure if I really have to do it. Some RU-vidrs suggested blocking the speedometer to avoid getting in trouble. It doesn't really make sense to me, and I'll probably take off the stickers soon. But I already have a few videos that I've already made like that. However, in the future, I’ll remove those stickers. Thanks for sharing your opinion 👍
