I just completed my masters and will sit for the BACB exam soon. Was looking for direction and somehow found this channel...you are so inspiring! Thanks for sharing and all you do.
Hey Lauren!! OMG I’m so glad you found my channel as well. Congratulations on completing your masters program. Please keep us posted on your BCBA journey. Thank you for commenting and subscribing😍😍😍
My experience as a sub motivates me to write a book on it. I worked as a sub in Prek -12th in charter and public schools in NYC for almost 3 years. My long term goal was to get a masters in special education. I have been looking into BCBA lately. I am the sub who actually gets the work done and whom teachers and students remember my name. Last month, I was in a school and a student who I subbed for in K the year before said I remember you. Alot of people think subbing is babysitting and it depends on the sub. Many just go to clock in and out. I actually do the lesson plan and will leave a note when needed to the teacher. The only way to get experience is to actually do the work.
I love this! Subs are so essential. You would make a good BCBA. I do offer mentorship & supervision and I currently have a few openings. Check out my link to get started. lnk.bio/dshortertaylor/

Hello Queen, thanks for this informative video! Your response to that person with the username “ihateblackbitches” was gracious, it shows how big of a person you are! Please do a video on how to become a BCBA. I have a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies and a minor in Psychology. I have ten years of experience working with adults with cognitive and physical disabilities. Two years working as an intensive case manager working with children. As a 30 year old mom, I’ve finally decided to get my master degree and eventually become a BCBA. I have no ABA experience but I became exposed to the field through my husband who was a former ABA of 8 years. Our son also had a positive outcome from early intervention due to him being in the NICu for a week after birth. (He’s almost 11 month and doing great without service).🙏🏾🙌🏾🙏🏾 I’ve been thinking about exploring this field but I’m not sure which route to take. I was planning to start working as an ABA but that was put on hold due to moving into another state during the peek of Covid19. Now that I am a stay at home mom who is bored out of my mind, I’m thinking about enrolling into an online program. Masters in Special ED or an ABA certificate.
Angeline Wensae Well hello Queen right back at you👑. Thank you for your comment and sharing your beautiful story. We have a lot of similarities and I think you would be great in the ABA field. Your question is so appropriate and timely! I am actually uploading a video on “How I Became A BCBA from Start to Finish” this week! & sharing my unique path which is similar to yours. We need more patient, caring, and experienced black women in the field. I say go for it! And let me know if you have any follow-up questions after I upload the video. Oh yea, & don’t forget to subscribe so you get notified when I upload it. It’s a 2 Pt video because becoming a BCBA is a long process but we’ll worth it. Thanks again for your kind words. Absolutely! You have a gift for storytelling, I have a feeling 🙏☺️ I am going back to graduate school for social work after some time spent subbing and other education-based jobs. So I felt you on the substitute teaching bit 😅 i think I might try to apply to be an RBT just to see if the field is for me 💜 I loved what you said in another video about having your masters in something else, how it makes you more well rounded. Also congrats on all you do, you seem like an amazing role model for your babies. ☺️💜
Social work is a great field! My mom is a social worker. I love when we all take different paths and apply them all to the common good of the families we serve. Who knows, you may find yourself back in ABA. Social workers make great BCBAs. And thank you for my mommy compliment 🥰. I try

Thank you for this video. I’m pursuing a BCBA certification. I finished my coursework but having difficulty in finding a good supervisor. Could you do a video on questions to ask a potential supervisor to make sure they are a good fit for your needs?
Hey Nye! Thank you for your comment and suggestion. This is actually a great idea. Have you had a “bad” supervisor in the past? I personally like to start with a ‘non-example’
Dom The BCBA MOM yes I’m going through it right now lol.... I thought I asked good questions and made my intentions clear but there were so many miscommunications and I want to know what I should ask and look for in a new supervisor. Long story short it took them 3 months to sign a contract so I lost all of those hours. Month 4 and 5 they don’t want to count my restricted hours for those months if my unrestricted hours don’t exceed the restricted hours for that month.

I know you are discussing BCBA but I am curious.I'm located in Northeast Florida. I am just wondering and needing some advice on pay. How much should I expect or ask for being new to rbt with a bachelor's just newly certified??
Crystal Brown Great question. In Illinois, RBT’s can start at $16 an hour. But because you have a bachelor’s or if you have experience you can ask for more ( $18 or $20). Are you looking to become a BCaBA with your bachelors? If so, that’s when you’ll see the jump-up in income. Or you can maximize your hours as an RBT and still make a pretty good living. I hope this helps! & don’t forget to #Subscribe if you already haven’t🥰

Great question. You can also Google the Average rate of a BCBA in your state, charge the same or similar prices that the insurance would reimburse, so I know some disciplines who charge on a sliding scale for out of pocket pay.
For most of my career I’ve been an independent contractor which allots me a more flexible schedule. Some of your multiple streams of income can be passive forms of income like ABA digital materials, trainings, or supervision.
Hi, I’m looking to go back to school and do the 4 year undergrad program in behavioral science at a college. I wud have the courses to do the bcba certification exam. I’m not sure if this is the right thing. I’m a financial advisor at a bank. I have been with the bank for 10 years. It’s scary to go back to school. I want to make changes in people’s lives.
awesome video & super informative! Would you be willing to upload another video about how you started your own ABA agency? how you got it off the ground and if the payout is worth it? I'm not sure if it's better to work for another company, be an independent contractor, or open my own agency. I am open to all three and already work for another company, I'm just confused about what my end goal should be (independent or agency), and what makes the most sense financially.
Welcome Tearra and thank you for your kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed the content. Are you a BCBA? Tearra Samuels oh my gosh. Don’t make me cry🥺. You are so kind. I had awesome black women in my life who helped me and I am dedicated to helping others. We must diversify the field!
I have a bachelors in psych and a masters in special ed. It’s been a long road lol. I graduated with my bachelors in 2017 and my masters in Sped. I’ve been working as a sped teacher under a provisional license since 2018. Being in the classroom can be very annoying at times so I was trying to see what else I could use my degrees for. I thought about getting a psyd or phd in psych but I don’t want to pay go in debt for another 100k if i did the psyd and for the funded phd programs I would have to stay on campus for 4-5 years and I’m getting too old for that. I’ll be 28 this year, I don’t want to live on a college campus writing research papers all day. I thought about getting my doctoral degree in education but I don’t want to pay for it and I’m not sure if i would even like being an admin because I hate the admins i work with at the school. Also if I wanted to take the admin route I could just get pass the exam to get my actual teaching license and since im going into my 3rd year of teaching, I have enough experience to work in admin and all I would have to do is take the admin exam. Anyway, I was in a aba program last summer but i wasn’t really sold on it and I didn’t like that my program required you to submit so many video assignments, I’m not really into being on camera all the time. So I switched out the program and went into an Eds program i was thinking about and i took one class in the fall and one the spring. The first class went ok and the second one didn’t and i didn’t like the school so i’m no longer in the program. Since I’ve been quarantining I’ve had a lot of time to think and ABA came across my mind again. I was exploring being a therapist but i don’t want to do another masters program and have to get all of the hours needed to become a therapist and i’ve avoided programs in the past that required a lot of unpaid supervision hours ( i’m not about to do any work for free) and if i wanted to do the psyd route i would have to do a year of hours. So I’m at the point where I can’t avoid the hours. I’m more open to aba now and I guess i can suck up getting the 1500 hours i need and i can get them by working at the school. I applied and got accepted in Arizona state universities aba cert program and i applied because the tuition price is reasonable and i can use fin aid to pay for it. So i’m starting next week and i’m going to see how it goes. My goal is become board certified and have the flexibility to work outside and inside the classroom if i wanted to, make more money than i can with teaching and start my own business. I know this is long but I hope you read it and I hope you know that i’ve been watching your vids and they inspired me to give aba another shot. Thanks and please leave any tips you have. And ignore my username, i know it’s ignorant but i’m a low key troll when i’m not focusing on school
ihateblackbitches I have so many questions ....... (I’m sure it’s non of my business) but this post, & your username has so many layers. But I will say this: 1) I’m glad you enjoyed my videos and they’ve inspired you to reconsider ABA. 2) Be very careful about why you choose this field or others like it. We are chosen to work with an extremely vulnerable population and it’s takes a special person to do it ethically & with integrity. Our main goal should be in the best interest of the client or student. This means sacrifice. I’ve done many things (I still do) that are unpaid. However, the payoff may result in experience, opportunity, networking, or effective change in the lives of others. 3). What is the function of trolling? And can that behavior be adjusted to provide positive reinforcement to others in our field? A LOT of ABA is connecting with people and pairing yourself as a reinforcement to EVERYONE! Can you use this time to practice reinforcement instead of using your intelligence and platform to tear others down. I hope this helps. Bye!
I took the time out to read your entire comment and was shocked that we literally have the same experiences. I considered pursing a PhD as well but decided it wasn’t for me because I didn’t want to be a school leader. I’m also turning 28 this year and I have a masters in special ed (2018). I’m gonna research some schools and apply and hopefully start a program in the fall or winter this year. I’m going into my 5th year as a teacher and it’s rewarding but being a BCBA and having a hand in both worlds it’s vet lucrative. We have the same vision literally lol. Good luck on your journey.
How are you able to manage all of these jobs? Wouldnt they hinder you from building your client case load in one secotr if you are working else where? I just got my BCBA and want to make the best of it, so I am genuinely curious.
Hello Dom, I almost finish with my bachelor’s degree in psychology... im thinking to continue my education toward master’s degree... and being BCBA is in my list of goals. Question: Do I have to take ABA for master’s degree? or can i take other degree to be able to sit and do the exam for bcba? for example: can i take special education master’s degree? or how about psychology counseling? im still a lil indecisive about being BCBA, or LPC, or special education teacher ... so can u lead me on this pls?
How long have you been a BCBA? How long was your program? I am in NYC and graduated college in 2015.. My long term goal was to get a masters in special education. Recently, I have been looking into BCBA. This one college just started the program in Jan and it is completely online. Even before Covid, this college generally does online courses..
Hey Alima, thanks for watching & commenting. I’ve been a BCBA for 5 years and in the field for 11. My program was less than 2 years but I already had a masters in psychology when I started my ABA program so I only needed 8 courses. I received my supervision hours while studying so it all happened in less than 3 years. You can still get a masters in special education and get a certification in ABA. I think that’s a great diverse skill set. Please keep us posted on your journey.

Sophia Gaillard usually jobs that offer part-time hours can be considered independent contractors. You can find these on sites like indeed. However, if you want to land ABA contract with agencies who don’t typically collaborate with our field, word of mouth is best. Start letting the right people know that you are a service provided in the area. And start disseminating (w/o soliciting). I hope this helps! Thanks for commenting and subscribing
Jose Ramirez great question. In most cases, the answer is yes, but there are still companies out there who enforce non compete clauses which usually prohibits you from working at another ABA agency, starting your own company or working with their clients after you have left their company. I made the mistake of signing a non compete clause and I regret it. It can be very limiting and even unethical. I hope this helps & don’t forget to subscribe ☺️
