I just want to say that I love this so much. I am a certified pet nutritionist and it can still be overwhelming. I’ve learned all the different ways to feed raw and I 100% agree that people have made it way too complicated and expensive. I have definitely experienced this myself with my 2 dogs. I don’t feed myself using a spreadsheet and formulas, why do my dogs need that? ANYTHING RAW is better than kibble 🤩. Keep up the good work!

Honestly a meat only diet is definitely a food route to go for dogs. You just gotta make sure they are eating a good protein to fat ratio. Your dog will prefer leaner of fattier meat depending on what's presented to them. Don't let them get any human food if at all possible this is the real harm for dogs.

Main reason ppl are so sold on kibble is because 1. Their vet 2. Don't care to put in the work to cook or prepare raw diet. 3. Ignorance of the benefits 4. Afraid they will get the dog sick. Crazy thing is they're already doing this by giving them toxic, chemically treatment kibble. If they seen a video on how kibble is made they would be horrified

@@brianrenteria9181 there are ways to make it cheaper if people are willing to do the extra work. You can raise your own meat and eggs for them even in an urban environment. Most places don't have laws against having quail or rabbits as livestock like they often outlaw chickens and ducks in higher pop areas. Quail would have more of a maintenance cost (harder to raise feed for) than rabbits, but the bonus of eggs too. Raise mealworms can cut cost of feed for quail by a lot and there is hardly any maintenance and near zero cost after you get them since they can live off food scraps and wheat bran or oats.

Great video. Don't be afraid to feed your dog a raw food diet. My German shepherd is 13 years old and I've been feeding him raw for over 10 years. Had his bloodwork done last week and all his numbers are perfect. He's very alert and except for arthritis, has no major health issues that older dogs can have. Most people actually think he's a much younger dog. Feed your dogs raw as nature intended!

Could you tell me how much of what you feed your GSD? I’m new to this and our GSD is 6 months old. We’re transition to raw. From my research, we should feed her 1.2lbs of raw food a day. Her meals are portioned out to chicken feet, chicken liver, chicken gizzards and heart, sardines or oysters, and then ground chicken or ground Turkey as the bulk. What would you recommend we change?
@Jen-jenn
@Jen-jenn Год назад
@@brannonsinclair9074 I think you're off to a great start. It's recommended to feed your puppy 4 to 6% of their current body weight per day and 2 to 3% of their ideal body weight as an adult. Starting off with chicken is excellent and then you can start experimenting with other proteins such as turkey, beef, bison, duck, rabbit, sardines etc. Just take it slow and see what your dog likes. The diet should be 80% meat, 10% bone and 10% Organs. I fed my dog approximately 2 pounds per day (sometimes more or less depending on his activity level). He ate chicken, beef, pork, lamb, goat, turkey etc that was ground up with the bones and organs in the correct proportions (ordered from a raw food company out of Indiana). I also gave him green tripe, whole chicken leg quarters and bone-in thighs, chicken gizzards and hearts, eggs, sardines, salmon and plain yogurt. He thrived on this diet and I believe it helped him live a full life. We lost him a few months ago at age 14 due to degenerative myelopathy. I honestly believe he'd still be with us if it wasn't for that genetic disease. Good luck with your puppy. By feeding her raw you're giving her the ability to thrive and live a wonderful life!

@@SleeplessinOC feeding bones is fine as long as they are uncooked. Cooked bones can splinter and are dangerous. Also, you shouldn't feed weight-bearing bones just soft bones (i.e. chicken thigh and wings, turkey necks).

While I realize that this diet isn't balanced, it was a way to get into the raw food diet and leave behind the chemical and preservative filled kibble and a way to save some money at the same time. I worked with my Vet throughout the transition to address health concerns for my dog at the time. That being said, I have recently tweaked the way I feed my pup and will upload a new video some time later this month. It's much more balanced I promise 😁

Don't get sucked into the "Balanced" idea. The food does not need to be balanced every meal, rather over time. This is an excellent base meal for your dog. Now and then add eggs, sardines, organ meats and cooked veg and feed the occasional raw meaty bones - I would recommend lamb ribs. If your dog needs joint support then blend whole eggs and feed a couple of times per week. Hemp oil, flax oil all rubbish - dogs can only utilize Omega 3-6 from marine/ animal sources (really interesting topic to research) . Good for you for taking ownership of feeding your dog and not being lazy and feeding compressed powder pellets like so many do! You simply cannot do any worse than that. Some dogs hit the jackpot :-) i'd say yours has!!!

@@garethjones1632 I have been feeding my dogs raw for 11 years and they do not have hooves or two heads like all the nay sayers said they would. I have improved over time and always learning. People seem to like to scare people who feed a homemade diet, yet that is what dogs have been eating forever. Commercial food is much more recent. I do think some basic knowledge is necessary, although it is not rocket science and anyone who is truly motivated can do it.

@@mamabear9389 Thanks for your comment, glad to see you are taking nutrition serious. I dont feed my dog raw, although they get plenty of raw food. I try to ask in each meal is this food nutriment or food. For instance if in the morning they get a tin of dog food (albeit 80% meat) is it nourishment? I doubt it is. But if i feed them a tin of sardines or raw eggs or scrambled eggs or raw minced beef or even a supermarket bought chicken casserole and sweet potato, then this is probably nutrition for my dogs. I dont really care what i feed them as long as it is good quality and is mainly protein, moderate fat and little carbs. Variety is the spice of life. I also have a dehydrator and make all my own dog treats. Dried chicken, liver, salmon etc. it's common sense, food is food and compressed powder pellets are just that.

@@garethjones1632 Supplementing commercial dog food with real food is definitely an option. Some people may feel more comfortable with this. One problem I have seen is all meat diets. That is definitely a no no because the dog needs some calcium which will be lacking if no bone is fed. However, commercial dog food has calcium so no worries if adding some fresh.

The key thing is practicality. You are right, some of the information out there is absolutely daunting and overwhelming. Can't switch to any regime or diet which cannot be practical and cannot be sustained. It's great that you are able to add fresh fish to his diet occasionally. And yes this meal is a thousand times better than factory processed toxic kibble. However i would urge you to add organ meat in the regular diet and rotate meats every month or so. Organ meat is basic and cannot be skipped. I'm sure you have multiple proteins at your disposal. Beef, lamb, chicken, turkey and pork are enough to follow. No need of exotic meats. Here in India, finding organ parts and specific meat cuts in a nightmare. All the best to you and your boy ♥️

Just include about once or twice a week some organ meats and some bone, raw of course. Dogs are great bone grinders but if not then you can grind the bones. Please check out, Dr Ian Billinghurst and his books, BARF, and Give Your Dog a Bone book. Also, Jason Cory's book on Raw Feeding Master Class. Some make a big deal about percentages like 80-10-10. Don't sweat the small stuff. As long as you add bone and organs once or twice a week you'll be ok. Don't give alot of organs at one time

I just found out that my 7 year old American Bulldog/ Boxer mix has a GIANT splenic mass in his stomach. It's bigger than a softball. I just put down my 13 yr old pittie mix, grandmother died two days before, i had just finished grieving my best friend, father and uncle, lost my job running the best restaurant in my city, new career, skipped town and went minimalist at the edge of the urban sprawl. Needless to say, broken hearted is the greatest understatement of the decade. I was raised in a sports and nutrition based family and I'm a complete idiot for feeding my fur babies the "kibble of death" for their entire lives. I bought in to the fancy labels and completely forgot how heartless and corrupted the world actually is. This video has brought tremendous relief to my frantic researching on how to keep my little marshmallow around for a little longer. As far as the freezer and the meat grinder, he's absolutely worth it. When I fell ill from the overwhelming stress of my life, he understood that I was feverish and he would come up to me, paw at my shoulder until i lifted the blankets and let him crawl under the covers where he would turn into a 100lb kitty cat and calm my violent shivering from running a high fever. He always wants me to be okay and I owe him more than I could ever give for his empathy. I suffer from complex PTSD and he's always on point doing exactly what he should do in every situation. It's quite possible that he's responsible for me choosing to stay in this unrelenting chaos versus crossing over to the other side. Thank you for removing all of the intimidation from making this crucial transition during a very critical time in my life. I wish you and your fur baby many many more memories until he graduates into being a full on sugar face. Cherish every moment. Take lots of pictures and videos. In the end, that's all that's left.

We also raw feed, although we do pay just a little more attention to the percentages; he get an 80, 10, 5, 5, split, which is 'casually' measured (a few grams more or less isn't a huge deal). For anyone reading, this means: 80% meat (muscle, brain, tongue, gizzards, lungs, heart, green tripe, trachea) 10% bone (this is found in chicken carcass, duck heads, duck and chicken necks are the best source) 5% offal (spleen, pancreas, testicles and ovaries, kidney, thymus) 5% liver (very important they get this everyday) Hope this is well received :-) Thanks again for the video

Thank you to you and Sprocket for sharing how easy it is to prepare a months worth of food! I've been transitioning my two 12 and 13 year old labs to raw. How I wish I had done it years ago! My 13 year old's thyroid took a nose dive and he was one sick puppy. He's on thyroid medication now for life, but I feel raw feeding is adding year to his life. I noticed a huge difference when I began adding lightly cooked organic broccoli, brussels sprouts, spinach, kale, and mushroom to his kibble. I then purchased a dehydrated food and transitioned him off the kibble. His energy level is way up and he's playful again. At the beginning, I was so stressed about the nutrient requirements and overwhelmed by the online information. fur babies

My wife and I do the same thing as you do only we toss the cut up veggies in with the meat right in the grinder and it mixes it up with the meat so them we toss some blueberries or other fruits in when we feed our dogs and they love it. Our 14yr old English lab was starting to walk slower and didn't have energy like she used to and since the raw food she has been like a puppy again and literally after the first day we saw results that told us it's better hands down ❤️ the biggest thing is freezing the meat to help kill bacteria but they love their raw food and it didn't cost anymore than all the kibble and extra stuff we were doing.. I won't give my dogs ANYTHING I wouldn't take or eat.. so if it has any warnings about human consumption or etc then I won't get it.. we are starting to bake homemade dog treats as well since we don't have children we can give some extra time to our dogs which I can see how having a family would make people think raw food just can't be possible but it's really not any harder than kibble and for the instant benefits we saw ill gladly dedicate a couple hours at most every week to prepping their raw food.. I take time to prep my own food so why not my dogs ❤️

I actually posted a raw food recipe on a Raw dog Food page on Facebook asking for advice and one of the first comments I got was if I can't supply the necessary nutrients through food i have available or supplements, it's better to feed a commercially available nutritionally complete and balanced food then to try. I literally found your video by googling "should I give up my raw diet for my dog if I can't balance it". After watching your video it's given me the confidence to continue improving my puppy's diet and I still continue to mix both raw and "high quality biscuits" together. Hopefully one day my dogs diet can be all raw when I'm more experienced. I'll also add when I've spoken to our vet, and taken our Puppy to her check ups, they have not found any issues.

We stick to an 80/10/10 ratio, plus fish, veg, fruit, eggs, and nuts. We use beef, pork, chicken, lamb, and some game meat for protein and bones, and get all that plus a lot of goat organs as well. sherri miller Eggshells are a great calcium source but not a bone replacement alone! Bones are made of equal parts calcium and phosphorus and for healthy bone growth you need to supplement phosphorus as well! Additionally if you get store bought eggs the shells are chemically treated and can have some nasty trace compounds in them this is universal in the US so unless it’s farm fresh (even if it’s organic) it will have these cleaning compounds in the shell.

@@Sophie-gv6gd Hi yes of course! Initially l thought l would do a straight switch so l ordered some raw chub food (it's pulped raw in a frozen roll you defrost). I gave my boy that and he didn't want to know. Next day l got him some raw chicken wings and he ate a few of those but the following day he got diarrhoea. But l wasn't giving up so l decided to order ready prepared raw with the correct ratio of muscle meat to ground bone to organ meat. As lm in the UK there are lots of raw dog food outlets. I basically took out a tablespoon of their kibble and replaced it with the raw food mixture at every meal. The following day l replaced two tablespoons of the kibble with raw and so forth whereby gradually l had replaced their whole meal with raw. This way it didn't have a dramatic effect on their stomachs. It did take a few months as my female was extremely fussy and on some days she wouldn't touch the raw. But l variated their diet. I sometimes gave them a chicken carcass each once a week and they seemed to enjoy that. On one particular day l gave them half a sheep's head each (watching them crunching on that was cringeworthy.....I decided not to add this to their menu lol) Its been trial and error but l think lve reached a balance now and the variety of meats is immense ....chicken, lamb,tripe, beef, duck and goose, salmon, game, venison,kangaroo etc. The list goes on... Lately they've been having Country Hunter Frozen nuggets whereby you defrost the number of nuggets for their body weight and they love these as these contain veg and berries too. And its had an amazing effect on their well being and their coats shine and both my German shepherds look so healthy. Their poops are so small and don't smell at all. There's no longer that typical dog poop smell that you often get with kibble fed dogs. And the best part is they're not hungry between meals either as they're content...

But Initially before you try any meat start with tripe first. Smelly l know but they love it and it does not affect their tummies. Then try different meats, chicken, lamb, beef etc and see what their stomachs are ok with and what they're not. Been feeding raw after my Pittie developed a serious yeast allergy. Yup, that means no starch, no sugar, and only low glycemic veg (like spinach, zucchini, green beans). Even so, she gets only about 2 tbsp of very ground to veg. Plus another 1 of pumpkin puree. We do the 80-10-10 ratio which works well. The 10 of organ meat is half beef liver and half beef kidney. After several years, she has just decided not to eat her bones (chicken drum and a foot). I'm going to need to figure out what's up. Going raw has saved her life - not exaggerating. Not even the vet's Rx diet helped. Of course now I understand that kibble simply isn't species appropriate nor is healthy quality ingredients and even the extrusion method of processing is not healthy. Bonus: much smaller poop that doesn't stink. Yard pick up is easy.

One thing you could add to the base mix is a wide variety of organ meats, both secreting and non-secreting. I feed my dogs a homemade diet and that is one thing I have been trying to do better at. The organs are loaded with nutrition. Raw Feeding Miami is a good source for organs.

@@TheHoppyHomestead That is awesome. I know many people who feed freeze dried glandulars because they are unable to source a wide variety of organs. FYI, My Pet Carnivore and Raw Feeding Miami are good sources for many organs.

I started raw feeding my 13 year old Aussie almost a year ago... the improvements are dramatic: no more skin rashes or itching, much shinier softer fur, less shedding, she smells better, more energy and mobility. Now she runs around like she's 8 years old, not 13 :)

I’ve been feeding my GSD raw for 2 years now, she’s 2.5 years old. I mainly feed chicken quarter legs as a whole. Bones will help her teeth from tartar. I supplement with vitamins, liver & kidneys, egg, sardines (2cans/week). I also hand feed her chicken quarter legs. Bones & secreting organs are important in raw diet. Thank you for sharing your video though.

I personally would recommend you ad at least one other protein source, liver, and just a bit of veggies, sardines also work wonders. Whatever works for your pup is best tho

You are correct. you can't just grind some chicken quarters and give em some bones and eggs or liver every once in a while. Fact is JUST chicken quarters alone does not come close to providing enough calcium for a dog daily...even worse for a puppy. They need a lot more in their growing years. But I can agree even the worst RAW diet (and this one is pretty unbalanced) is still better than kibble.
@TheHoppyHomestead
@TheHoppyHomestead 2 года назад
Chicken quarters actually provide plenty of calcium. A bit too much in the long run actually. The bone content of a quarter is about 30%. Thighs or legs aren't that high but the whole quarter has more than enough calcium. Anyway, if you want to see the updated diet I have him on now, I posted a new video ☺️

@@TheHoppyHomestead they need a lot more than just calcium and protein including, omega 3, vitamin a, iodine, vitamin e, manganese, etc. If these aren't supplemented than you will probably see issues in the future. You can try using a pre made raw brand that's already completely balanced because that is the most important thing

@@TheHoppyHomestead i see, in my case i started feeding my 2 lovely dogs raw food and 8 had the same problem with one of my dogs but since they were only 5 months old he couldnt swallow big chunks and learned to chew One of the biggest problems giving adult dogs raw meat is they dont know how to chew however i think grinding is perfect solution for that and it looks very neat and clean compared to whole meat you made me consider grinding say half of their meat to get a win win situation. Nice video your dog is lucky to have you

I have a German shepherd. She’s 7. I’ve always only bought the “best” and most expensive kibble for her. But about a year ago, she stopped eating kibble all together. Despite the different types I had tried. Since, I’ve been feeding her rice, chicken, salmon and tuna daily. But I’m very interested in the raw food diet. I’m a middle aged woman here without any help. And I work full time. Idk If I could do all this.

be careful with the bones; just had to take my dog to the vet with vomiting and watery, bloody diarhea due to eating chicken bones. It is fatal without intervention too. so, yeah, if you're going to feed bones then grinding them up is the way to go. As for me, mine will not be getting bones ever again.
@dard4642
@dard4642 2 года назад
It usually depends on whether or not the bone has been cooked. Raw bones aren't as brittle and sharp as cooked bones.

You're on the right track but this is definitely unbalanced, to the point where kibble might even be better longterm. Adult dogs typically need to eat 2-3% of their ideal body weight. This should consist of 80% muscle meat, 10% bones, 5% liver, and 5% of other secreting organs. Hearts and gizzards count as the muscle meat part. You also need to supply other whole foods or powders because even with that there are nutrient deficiencies. You can add stuff such as berries, oily fish, pumpkin seeds, kelp, goat milk/kefir, and a lot more. If thats out of your budget than I would highly suggest feeding a premade raw that meets AAFCO standards, or kibble that meets WSAVA requirements. You can also try half kibble half raw. Your dog may be happy right now but that definitely isnt healthy long term. If you can find/afford it, look into whole prey options. Even a day old chick everyday can make a difference.

Yinuo Dong ANYONE ADVISING KIBBLE KNOWS VERY LITTLE ABOUT NUTRITION. KIBBLE IS POISON DRIED DEAD FOOD.......Apart from oily fish the other foods you advise is nonsense.....Dogs do not need fruit berries seaweed or kefir.
@isabellalee8330
@isabellalee8330 2 года назад
@@golfinguna First of all, Kibble is not Poison Dried food, unless you buy from from unknown brands and expect to pay 2 dollars for a 10lbs bag. Also, Dogs are omnivores, which means that certain vegetables, fruits, legumes can benefit them. Dogs do not need fruit berries, seaweed, or kefir, however it can help with specific deficiencies. Kefir contains anitibiotics and aniti fungal properties. It can als improve skin and coat health, and to a certain degree, prevent allergies. berries and some fruits contain vitamins, fiber and antioxidants. Seaweed is a great source of protein, iron, iodine, magnesium, and omega-3 fatty acids. Even if kibble doesn't have the freshest and best ingredients, most are formulated by experts and are completely balanced if they follow WSAVA guidelines. Feeding raw is great if formulated properly but if not than it has a lot more risks long term. Also, Advising a certain food does not make you more or less knowledgable. It simply states a point of view that a person has gathered through their own thoughts and research. So to think that I don't know anything about dog nutrition because I advice kibble is dumb unnesasary.
