I born in Thailand, but moved to US with my family for the past 50 years. I go back to Thailand many times. March, I was in Thailand with my American girlfriend for 2.5 weeks. We spend a lot of time southern Thailand and love it. I own a house in US and told my son, brothers and girlfriend that I might move to Thailand after I retire in 3 years. They support me and understand how easy to live there with the cost of living after retirement. Thanks for your video!

@jacksykes9112 - I have the same story! My family moved to the US when I was 2 years old. I am now 56 and I plan to take an early retirement in Thailand in the next 3-4 years. In the past 2 years, I have visited Thailand 3 times, each time for one month. I am planning my next trip in October for a month and while I am there I will check cities outside of Bangkok to retire. I love my adopted country of the US but I feel that Thailand will be a better fit for retirement. I like the cost of living, culture, the friendly people, and a more peaceful environment. I am a dual citizen so I don't have to worry about visas.

Same. I was born in Thailand and moved to the US at age 2. My business keeps me in the US but I would prefer to move to thailand. I think Asia is the future. I enjoy the culture of respect & as China progresses it brings all its neighbors up. It's hard to be an American in America and a Thai in Thailand but American in Thailand is big jump up.

@@jacksykes9112 - In April 2023, I went to Thailand to renew my expired Thai ID card and Thai passport. This was during the time of the Prime Minister's election so applying for a new or renewal was very closely monitored. Since I lived in the US my entire life, I had no records of ever living in Thailand which is correct. It was a nightmare trying to get my Thai ID renewed because the district offices I went to kept giving me the run around because they were suspicious of my background, thinking perhaps I was trying to steal someone else Thai identity! Thankfully, I had a Thai girlfriend at the time who worked for the Thai government, and she was able to vouch for my identity, even though, I had my Thai birth certificate, Thai expired passport, and expired Thai ID. As soon as I got my Thai ID, I was able to renew my Thai passport! Moral of the story? DO NOT let your Thai ID and Thai passport expire when you're overseas.

I live in London. Have done most of my life. And I hate it. I was in Thailand for Christmas and new year 2023/24, staying on Koh Samui and I loved it. I'm coming again this year and this time, I'm staying in Bangkok before going back to Samui. And I can't wait. The plan is to live there within 5 years. Thailand is a great country and not overhyped. I've been to a lot of places. Thailand is the first foreign country that I wanted to go back to immediately or live. Fuck the haters bro. Live ya life and enjoy it.

You don’t seem to have ever lived in developing countries so you have not really internalized yet that what you enjoy in Thailand is mostly just being richer than 95% of the locals around you. You pay cheap prices and can do loads of stuff because the locals are poor. That being said, I’d agree that the UK and Europe are depressing, but your view is simplistic and naive

When I finish watching this clip. It reminds me of my neighbor in bangkok. She always give me some food almost everday when she finish cooking. I call her Grandma becoz she is around 90years old, but she has passed away almost 3 years. I still thinking of her kindness & generousity. Eventhough, it is super hot summer time in Thailand but most of people here are still kind. There are civil liberties and there is financial freedom. While you can live a better life in Thailand with less money, no other citizens in the world have as many civil liberties as Americans (too many at times, e.g. assault rifles and unlimited ammo). Did you not hear about the activist that died in prison for criticizing a law? In the U.S. you can yell pretty much anything you want at the President himself and nothing will happen to you. When was the last time you heard of an alcohol ban for any reason in the U.S.? Yep, those are common in Thailand.

As you went into Boots, there is also another great advantage to living here. You can get a lot of medicines which are very expensive back in the US over the counter here. Catch a food bug, no problem, grab some Cipro for 100 baht. Severe bug bite? Grab a steroid cream for 50 baht. Strep throat you say? Grab some Amoxy or any other antibiotic for the equivalent of $3 USD. My wife needed to have a molar extraced last week or face the dreaded root canal. Price? A whopping 400 baht and all done and dusted in under 30 minutes. Even with dental insurance back home, this would have costed us hundreds of dollars..

I enjoy your video, I’ve been here going on 5 years and am originally from Hawai’i. I totally agree with your observations, coming from Hawai’i I do know the difference between visiting and living in a place that has a lot of visitors. I am fortunate in that I have been married to a Thai woman for 10 years, she came to live with me in Hawai’i for 5 years and decided to retire here. We have a house in the country and I have a condo in Krung Thep so the best of both worlds. Keep up the good work.

@@ikakau Healthcare here in the US is terrible. I cannot get a prompt health check-up even with insurance coverage. Not to mention, when I had a problem with my frozen shoulder, I had to go through various facilities such as my primary care doctor's office, the X-ray department, an MRI scan at a different location, an orthopedic doctor's office, a cortisone injection clinic, and physical therapy practices. The entire procedure of physical diagnosis and injections took about six months, with an additional six months for physical therapy. Yet, the pain in my shoulder is still not resolved. The entire treatment ordeal seems designed to serve the hospital, clinic, and medical businesses, as they only care about benefiting from insurance claims. In the end, the victims are American citizens who pay taxes. Did you know that in Thailand, you can go to a one-stop service hospital without an appointment and without extra nonsense 'emergency charges'?
@ikakau

Can relate to just about everything you said in this video. Having lived in Manhattan, Maui, and spent most of my life in San Diego, living here in Thailand is so awesome for everyday living. Nothing fancy, just doing mellow things like getting coffee, lazy days at home, hanging out. It's just such a nice environment, even with the hot hot weather and iffy air quality. We even tried Da Nang for a couple of months, but missed it here in Bangkok too much. Thanks so much for the video.

I have been to Thailand many times. The positive vibe in Thailand is very good. I live in Southern California near the ocean so I feel very lucky. But I would never waste time dating American women. I consider the U.S. as monk mode for a single man, because the quality and attitude of American w-m-n in general is not a compliment to a man's life. Thailand is much warmer in many ways. When in Thailand even if you don't have a GF you a have many options for female companionship which is a much more balanced life. The U.S. is just a place to make money and save the money to enjoy in Thailand.

Nice video, Paul! I really appreciate your views, and it was great to learn that you spent some time in Hawaii. I’m a middle-aged man sort of traveling down the career hill towards retirement (though still some years to go) and have been watching videos by lots of young guys like yourself living in SE Asia, as I’m considering the area (particularly Thailand) as a possible retirement destination for me and my wife. Much of what you say about Thailand, I would have said at your age about Taiwan, where I lived for 12 years and married into a Taiwanese family. My wife and I actually moved to Hawaii in 2006, where we raised our children. You’re correct…Hawaii is certainly one of the finest places in America. But it is very expensive, as limited in that it’s a chain of small islands with fewer than two million people at any given time…and also very remote from everything else in the world. So I’m looking for other, cheaper and more varied options for retirement. I’m glad you’re still happy after three years in Thailand!

As an American I can I definitely say that the US is not great, hasn't been great and will never be great. I have lived west coast, east coast and traveled all through this country. It's very toxic and self centered. I have traveled to South Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, most of Europe and the best place I've been to was South Korea and Vietnam. Thailand is a wonderful country as well. Love your channel and keep doing what you're doing. My wife's mother was born in Thailand and my wife is going to apply for dual citizenship with us eventually moving there is about 3 years. I work in IT and my biggest obstacle would be to find an IT job for an English speaking company/clients. PS your dog is super cute

Bros, I was in an international software company. Frankly, if you really want to work in Thailand, you must learn Thai language to be able to work with Thai colleagues!!! 🙏 I've never seen any foreign colleage who cannot communicate in Thai language except those who came to train us a short course such as one week time. Thai programmers are talented and fun to work with (not so stressful) but they are not fluent English speakers. I've worked with Indian programmers (sorry to mention it), they spoke English fluently but caused so many trouble in finishing job (I was a project leader, so I knew who worked well or just good at speaking). If you're a low level programmer who just take orders from your boss, you can be lazy to learn Thai language. 😂 But whenever you've subordinates, you'll be sad not learning Thai language. No need to speak Thai fluently, no need to be good at it so you can understand Thai literature. Just be able to discuss with your team in Thai language is enough. ❤ Your wife's mom will be able to help. Use Thai language when you're home, watch Thai news, movies, documentaries to help your ears familiar to Thai language as we all learn any language starting from listening. We can speak before read or write since we're a baby because we listened, right? Also, you can find an online course from foreigners in Thailand such as a RU-vidr named Gary Butler - The Roaming Cook etc. Life will be hard if you're lazy. 😅 But life will be easy, if you do what you need to do though you don't want to do it. 😉 Best regards, 🙏

I agree with you on a the fact that once you live somewhere for awhile, you're in home mode and not party mode. I lived in Thailand for 1.5 years and felt I had to leave because I wasn't taking full advantage of the party-mode. Sure, I did that for the first 6 months but then settled into home mode. Thailand is just so super convenient that someone like me can get really lazy. I also see some of the same behavior in some of the expats there. Another reason why I left was because the pollution got really bad, and then there is the new overseas tax rule. For me, Thailand needs to be a place I visit and have fun. The convenience is a huge trap to make me a lazy blob.

Just curious, what is the average salary for Thai people living there? It seems like what you showed is very affordable for foreigners, not for Thai people.
@iPaulLee
@iPaulLee 3 месяца назад
What i showed is from the lens of a foreigner/higher salary lifestyle here. What i showed is not affordable for lower salaries. But there are still options for less. One condo could be 20,000thb and 5 minutes away is another small condo for 8000thb.

@@iPaulLee I appreciate the reply. First of all. I really enjoy watching your videos. The reason I ask the question is because I want to know what life is like for the average Thai working professionals there. I feel like foreigners are pricing out these nice places and make them unaffordable. I saw a video of some houses in Changmai, 3-4 bedrooms at a gated community, for 400-500k US. I can’t even fathom any Thai people can afford these type of places. Maybe I was wrong to make that assumption. When I was there over ten years I didn’t think the average Thai people would be able to afford something like that. Granted, that was 10 years. Maybe the economy has gotten better for their people there.

US was good 30 years ago, not much crime and strange culture. After 30 years, US didn't spend on upgrading infrastructure, but spent on wars. Most US cities now are full of crime, root, homeless and violence. Food are junk and pricy. Asia is opposite. Most cities in Asia are clean, safe, and people are nice. US for work or short term study, but to live, Thailand and Asia are the places to be.

Paul, keep speaking your truth. You experienced trauma but now in recovery. Some will understand, others will not. Some don't want to understand. You keep being your best version of yourself. Helping others, being positive, self-care, and being a light. As others burn out around the world, you are providing an option for healing, serenity, and tranquility. One thing is universal, you can not heal and continuously be in the trauma source at the same time. Stay encouraged. Sam Alix, US Veteran, CHAMP 'Recovery is Possible'

I am an American that has worked overseas for 35+ years so I feel like a stranger in my own country. I decided to retire in Thailand. No regrets and Thailand has a more relaxing, nonjudgmental vibe to it than the USA which seems to have a lot of “hotheads” and too materialistic.

I've spent 5 months living in Thailand and I am glad I am back to the U.S. Let me list a few reasons on why Thailand sucks ass: 1. Thai Immigration police and Thai police in general are a bunch of corrupt mofo's who are out there to get your farang (foreigner) money. 2. There is no freedom of speech in Thailand, none whatsoever, if you say something that is remotely critical of the government, you will go to prison very very fast. 3. The level of bureaucracy and red tape in Thailand is simply staggering. You got to have a Resident Certificate for every single thing you try to do, you can't sell or buy anything, cannot open a bank account, can't register, but or sell a motorbike, so Thai immigration will issue only one paper per transaction sought, but only if you have a long term visa, and you have to make a trip to Immigration office and stand in line for hours to get one paper. 4. As a foreigner, you have no rights or recourse to anything in Thailand, everything is conditional upon your visa and your work permit if you are lucky enough to have one. 5. You juggle with visas, border runs, extensions, renewals, 90-day reporting to Immigration office in person, inspections, checks, officer visits, bribes, bribes, bribes, etc. - this nonsense never ends. 6. New Thai Tax Law that is effective as of Jan 1st of 2024 with a sliding scale of up to 35% of tax liability payable to Thailand Dept of Revenue on your worldwide income if you reside in Thailand more than 180 days in a calendar year - this affects you and all other long term expat residents of Thailand, and double taxation agreement with the U.S. won't be much help to you. I hope you got enough money on attorneys and bribes. Good luck with Thailand!

Your points are valid but I think most foreigners who don’t care to think or talk about politics or the authorities, it’s not a big deal. I never have an inclination to defame or criticize the gov. And all of your other points about rights or bureaucracy, that’s the case with anywhere if you’re a foreigner. The average foreigner is able to do pretty much do any enjoyable aspects of life here in Thailand, but have a bit more hurdles. It’s fine tbh.

1. If you were facing like that, please report the head of police authorities office or ask Thai people to look into this especially social media can go easily viral I don’t believe they will do but I don’t refuse that we don’t have corruption, one more importantly pls ensure you did follow local laws and I don’t agree that police will just ask money from visitors straight away without they did smth illegally that is the penalty 2. I condemned and complained government every single day and I’m now walking around freely, this is not really true if you can read Thai language in social media it’s very freedom to discuss about government except royal family we can’t say anything except Love live the king hahahah but no need to care about this much just enjoy yourself while visiting 3. Totally agreed, they are traditional paper-based services 4. Of course, all of conditions depend on visa conditions, to avoid bank scamming or doing smth illegally as of now we are experiencing bank fraudulent/ scamming call center/ selling bank accounts and most of operations are from outside of Thailand 5. It’s a norm of visa process, each country has their own rules and regulations including originated passport requirements 6. Yeah it’s rising and expat incomes they are mostly categorized mid to upper class of earning that’s why you have to pay a bit higher and if visitors come to stay for a bit longer and use public infrastructures it’s a norm to pay taxations

@stephl6616 - if you have a college degree, you can teach English in Thailand. Depending on your qualifications, some schools will provide a condo. Thailand has a way to go to reach fluency like in the Philippines. There are other visas in Thailand such as Education visa (learning Thai, cooking, muay Thai), Volunteer visa, work visa, elite visa, retirement visa...etc.
