How I Film the Northern Lights with the Sony FX3 and FX30 - HDR Upload

Every year I run tours to the very north of Norway taking small groups of adventurers well above the arctic circle in the hope of seeing the Northern Lights. As always I try to film this amazing spectacle and over the years as cameras have improved it's become easier and easier to video the Aurora in real time so that what you see in the video matches what you would have seen if you had been there. In the past Aurora footage was almost always shot using long exposures and time lapse which resulted in greatly sped up motion and the loss of many of the fleeting details seen in the Aurora. In this video I give you a bit of behind the scenes look at one of my trips with details of how I shoot the Aurora with the Sony FX3 and also with the FX30. The video was uploaded in HDR so if you have an HDR display you should see it in HDR, if not it will be streamed to you in normal standard dynamic range. The cameras used are Sony's FX3 and FX30. The main lenses are the Sony 24mm f1.4 GM and 20mm f1.8 G but when out and about on the snow scooters I use the Sony 18-105 G power zoom on the FX30 for convenience.

Absolutely masterful video. I've been looking for someone to really get into the weeds on how to capture aurora the right way, in real time, and haven't found any videos before this. I'm so impressed with your knowledge and experience and just the quality of this video. You've earned a subscriber!

Alister-Superb video !!!! I've always enjoyed your videos, especially your Sony gear/product reviews-which I've purchased based on your expert reviews/tutorial (starting with the Sony EA50 through the FS5 and FX9. etc, Would loved to have seen these awesome auroras in 8K with the Sony A1, which I bought. This video is, nonetheless, spectacular in 4K!

Great insight! I would love to see the denoise settings you use for both FX3 and FX30, also maybe some lens recommendations for both!

NR settings will vary greatly from shot to shot depending on frame rate, how much noise needs to be reduced etc and are adjusted as I go.

Hey ! very nice content 😃 I plan to shoot some aurora in Norway soon with my fx30, and after your video i think to shoot simply with the video mode or S&Q but do you think it will not too fainted for me with a 11mm f2.8 in video or 1sec shutter + 2500 iso in s&q ? Thanks for your content 👍
@alisterchapman

A lot will depend on how bright the Aurora is at the time. Some nights f2.8 and 2500 ISO would need a 1 second exposure. Another time you might be at 12 fps and 1/12th.

It takes a while for YT to get around to the HDR encoding.

So are you not at a shutter speed of 1/50 when filming? What is your shutter speed at?
@alisterchapman
@alisterchapman 2 месяца назад
It depends on the frame rate I am shooting at, generally it will be the equivalent of a 360 degree shutter.

8:55 - why does house texture jumping? Is there a h.265 compression trouble or that's something that happend in real?
@alisterchapman

I think its an encoding artefact.

you are underexposing constantly hence the excessive noise

I'm filming something that is generally very faint, so getting a decent exposure for a real time video is a challenge. Its only in recent years with newer more sensitive cameras and very fast lenses where it has possible to shoot at normal frame rates rather than using timelapse and long exposures to shoot the Aurora.
