Spring CB Radio skip is now rolling in to the UK. In this video I show how I chase down skip contacts. You wont always get contacts first time and the skip will not always be there.
(The radio i use in the video is not type approved for CB frequencies)

If you can listen to the 10 meter Ham Radio band between 28.200 and 28.300 there are low power beacons that transmit Morse code that tells you the Hams call and location. The call will let you know the country it's located in and the location such as a major city. It's Morse code is very slow so you can just jot down the dits and dashes on paper and look them up. If you can hear a beacon that's only 5 watts or less transmit power then you know you can be heard by CB'ers in the location the beacon is in. The frequency the beacons use in the 10 meter band is close enough to the 11 band to let you know where and in what direction the CB Radio distant stations are and you know they will be able to be contacted on a CB Radio.

Do you usually use 525 for calls? 555 has always been used for calls, but for the same reason there is also a lot of noise, and it can be impossible to get a call through. In the eighties we also used 26,285 for calls.

Fred, in the shed , looking forward to having a chat with you, I've learned a great deal from your videos, thanking you muchly If you hear CT5941, it's the Lancashire lass, I have a feeling with the 9900 I will need more of your wisdom. Oh, how do I use the built in SRW on the 9900?
@CB-RADIO-UK
@CB-RADIO-UK 9 месяцев назад
Hi. Yes the 9900 has a big learning curve. Press and hold the MENU button for 2 secs to enter menus. Turn the big channel / freq knob and select INDIC then turn tuning knob again to choose SWR. From there i think you push the knob in to switch on the SWR display and once active you turn the knob to OFF to switch it off. Its been a while. The SWR display only really works on FM and AM. It will be all up and down on SSB. When you key up the freq display will change to your SWR reading. Good luck.

What causes VHF and UHF to propagate over grater distances in the evening during the Summer? I live in Croatia in northern Adriatic area and in the summer in the evening I can hear a ton of VHF and UHF stations from Italy (amateur radio, marine radio, taxis, various services and telemetry signals, modes used are FM and DMR) but sadly it seems here in Croatia almost no one uses radios for communication anymore except for weather reports on marine radio, encrypted TETRA and very occasionally pmr446.

@g8ymw
@g8ymw Год назад
Lower atmosphere. It's the temperature change at dusk (and dawn) The air temperature changes faster than the ground so creating a local duct The better V/UHF propogation occurs when there is a high pressure weather system that creates major ducting, especially when the weather system shifts off An example, I've been driving around the East Midlands of England and able to access German UHF repeaters. A sea path helps Possibly best tropo DX (not me by the way) from Britain is West Scotland to the Canary Islands
@CB-RADIO-UK
@CB-RADIO-UK Год назад
Hi Zara. Its called radio propagation. The ionosphere becomes electrically charged and acts like a mirror reflecting radio waves from one point to another around the globe. It means that you can contact someone 1000's of km away on low power.

Hi. Skip is radio propagation where radio signals are reflected back to earth when they hit a charged ionosphere . Rather like skimming a flat stone across a pond. See here for better description. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_propagation

One of the things that have bugged me since coming back on is folk not using proper call signs such as “unit 123 central Uk” etc. It’s especially bad on 385 LSB which is more or less the side band Super Bowl now, full of wannabe Rubber Ducks 🦆 🚛 running big power and talking absolute garbage😀 If you give a nice clear and consistent, “26 CT 1664” I bet you find that folk will come back to you more often. Shouting out 26 1664 is likely only going to cause confusion, especially if there is a lot of QSB / QRM.👍🏻
@CB-RADIO-UK
@CB-RADIO-UK Год назад
Yes thats a good point. Sometimes the window of contact is very small when a lot of stations are calling going over you. The only problem the CT callsigns is that they have grown longer. In the past ive just called out London on 385 LSB. Many have started their own groups and have smaller double digit calls.
@GG-im1cb
@GG-im1cb Год назад
@@CB-RADIO-UK The UK fm has always been a zoo, however the side bands were self policed, largely by the network of proper DX clubs. The radio protocol was much tighter and more proficient than it is now as there is a lot of sloppy practice creeping in from across the pond, as well as some of the more unsavoury language and behaviour from the natives that is normally found up on on 27/81. However it may just be that I’m just an old fart caught in a time warp😄

@@americaswayout4489 I’ve been on the CB 30 odd years and been a licensed amateur (ham) for over 10, however I’ll be honest and say I don’t care much for the ham bands as IMO the best DX is still on 11m, but there is a definite decline in operating standards on SSB.

@@SolitaryBro so using a HF radio designed for 20khz wide 'channels' with over 5khz of deviation is better than a CB designed for 10khz channel spacing and 2.5khz of deviation ?? erm, even using a CB on HF (or at least 10mtrs) is often better than a HF set.. wind your neck in, you're clearly another 'not a clue but knows it all' M6 holder..

Hi Fred, Netherlands here. Got the CRT SS 6900 last month with a little Will on my car roof. Would that be possible to DX-ing you some day? Currently the antenna is tuned to the EU40 27Mhz. Question, might be of an obvious stupid question, can I best retune for 27.555 for best result? Also to prevent blowing up the end stages when I go full wattage?
@CB-RADIO-UK
@CB-RADIO-UK Год назад
Hi. Depends how your 6900 has been programmed but it should tune from high 26 MHz right up to 29 MHz. in one of the bands you will find 27.555. You should have no issues running the 6900 flat out. Sometimes on FM they can get a little warm around the mic plug area but unlike the 9900 they get that hot.
