There are no words to express how much I appreciate your videos. I have been glued to each one for a few months now here in Valencia, Philippines (Just above Duma) because my time is up December 19 (3 years) Was REALLY hoping for Bali but it didn't opened. My issue all these years with Philippine is INTERNET. (Which is going down for 5 days now or will be "slower." I too make my living ONLINE and internet has been hell for me. So how is the internet where you are? For me also I will be waiting for that video with EVERYTHING INSIDE AND NO KID NOISES IN THE BACKGROUND which would ruin my several conference calls a week. I need QUIET QUIET QUIET, GOOD INTERNET AIR CON and kitchen and everything INSIDE; THAT reminds me of my childhood. (Chuckle) Again, appreciate you.

Nice Vlog Dan - I love the Spanish style housing and apartments. My house in Florida is spanish style with a small courtyard in the front and a large open yet covered porch in the back. I do not have the tiles and designs you have there but I might change that in the future as I do like the look !! I like the outdoor kitchen - that is nice !! I do prefer indoor toilet and Aircon but it is nice to be only 1 block from the beach. I like the idea of walking around both day and night to find a longer term location. I think the more you do this the better a person will get at it. Thank You Dan !!!

The tip on getting to a place first and walking the neighborhoods is useful advice. What's still not clear is once you found the neighborhood you like, how did you find the particular property? Do they all simply have signs outside letting you know they are for rent? Are they all like this? The tip about the app to test internet connection was quite interesting.
@VagabondAwake
@VagabondAwake 3 ะณะพะดะฐ ะฝะฐะทะฐะด
Each country is slightly different. Some hate signs, some are not well connected digitally, and others are all agent based. You walk the neigborhoods and look for rental signs. If you don't see any, then try Googling "Apartments for rent" in the local language and see what comes up. You can also find landlords on webpages like Airbnb, Booking, etc. Tell them you are in the neighborhood and want to see the inside before booking.

I think the tough part for digital nomads working for traditional companies remotely, is that we're expected to be online and working M-F. So following the "book 4-5 days first..." route would involve taking vacation each time you move to a new location to go on this in-person fact-finding mission on where to stay. There are certainly benefits to being able to check out a place in person, but it may not be feasible for those with traditional/set work situations and we may be forced to book longer-term rentals from the get-go based on online reviews. Also, for "slow travel" nomads, taking the "book 4-5 days first..." approach may leave you in a pickle to find those better long-term rentals, as they may not be available on a monthly, discounted rate by the time you complete your onsite fact-finding mission.

Vagabond Awake Dan. I have followed your Chanel for couple years. May I suggest mind body exercise like Qigong to you? Overseas travel constantly and family member health are a lot on oneโ€™s mind. Please take care of yourself. A good beginning Qigong movement regiment is called Eight Precious Brocades which you can find on RU-vid easily. Think of it as a moving meditation. Just try not to practice the routine when there are thunders or lightenings outside.

Another great and critical video. I am down to gathering final info before my imminent departure on my "Slow Travel" adventure. Launching around the first of May. Two questions: I think I remember a similar video you made where you discussed using Google maps (Looking first at the "tan section of the map", as I recall. Does that ring a bell and, if so, what was the title of the video? Secondly, I will hopefully be launching a RU-vid travel Vlog as well but I still have much to learn about the details. What broadband speeds are the minimums you look for (up and down) in a new accommodation? Thanks again for ALL you do.

I think the place looks very nice and it certainly makes sense to pay a bit more and be happy for an extended stay than just save and regret the decision. I am from Vienna, Austria and usually try to get away for the winter months ... last year, I went to Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam but Southeast Asia is pretty much off limits this year ... your videos made me consider Mexico ... I do speak Spanish as I lived in Havanna for 4 years back in the 80ies ... even before that, I worked for NCL out of Miami and because of my Spanish, they put me on their new Mexican run which included Chichenitza, Tulum, Cozumel ... would prob want to revisit these places plus Palenque and Taxco if possible ... will wait a bit as I won't leave b4 early Dec due to some cultural events here in Vienna in Nov ... thanks for sharing your experiences and know-how!

Your unit is rustic and nice. I had 2 choices on summer in P.V. Mex. and one upstairs had an open design, but the dust and dirt from the road can blow in as well as leaves, etc. I took more a closed unit and it was nice and safe, but air flow was a bit constrained.

@@VagabondAwake The condo choice was along the Cuale River, so no noise but the storms would blow and bring leaves and things into the unit. This unit was on the 2nd floor and also had a very narrow stairwell hard to navigate. Worse, the unity wasn't clean. We had two dogs with us so we were not looking for a luxury unit. Sometimes advance bookings can be a problem, too, so I knew units are avail. and wanted to see the place - we spent only one night in a back street hotel.

Hi Dan, I just found you on the web a few days ago and have been "binge watching" your channel. haha. You put out some great information, thank you. I do sincerely want to travel as you do, but a little hiccup is I have a small dog. My guess is it complicates things. Have you done any videos yet on how to travel with pets? I don't think half the places for rent would like animals. And I am thinking many countries want to quarantine a dog for a week or a month first over rabies issues. How hard is it to through a dog into the mix? If you have info or a set of videos on this that would be awesome. TYVM and Hope you can get back to me if you have a min. Have a great week.

HELLO, ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO! MY QUESTION FOR YOU...IS THERE A REQUIREMENT TO HAVE A PROOF' OF RETURN FLIGHTS FOR SOME OF THE PLACES YOU TRAVELED? I KNOW WHEN I WENT TO ITALY...THIS WAS NOT A REQUIREMENT...HOWEVER I AM RECALLING SOMETHING ON LINE REGARDING CERTAIN AREAS REQUIRING THIS?
@VagabondAwake
@VagabondAwake ะ“ะพะด ะฝะฐะทะฐะด
Great question Joylight, As you have probably heard we almost never buy round trip tickets. We move forward slow traveling the world. But some countries require a return ticket or onward flight. But the rules change all the time so don't assume what I am about to tell you is true for any airline or country. You have to check the night before. But is they require a return ticker or onward flight, here is what we do. If so, when you try to board your flight going to the country, with a one-way ticket, the airline will ask for proof of a return flight or an onward flight. We handle this three possible ways. If you can find a refundable ticket a few hours before you board your flight, buy that, and cancel after you clear customs at your destination. If not, buy an onward flight from one of the online companies that offer onward flights. They cost about $12 USD. Just Google the words "Onward Flights" and a few will pop up. But if you decide to buy the $12 onward flight, show up at the airport 3 hours early. We had one refused by the airline once. So that brings up the third way. When your $12 onward flight is refused, step out of line, and log on with your computer or smartphone and buy the cheapest flight you can find exiting the country. For example, we search online for the cheapest ticket to a nearby country, leaving that country. Then you lose much less money than you would if you bought a roundtrip ticket to your home country. Skyscanner is the best place to find cheap tickets in our experience. Some countries will also let you buy an onward train or bus ticket to another country which can be even cheaper. Use RometoRio.com to find those. Best, Dan

Renting a place for a night or two to check it out has one big risk; that someone will rent the place in the mean time because it appears to be a good deal. So after the two days that you rented it for you learn that someone else will be in it shortly after your two days so there goes your idea of renting it by the week or month!
@VagabondAwake
@VagabondAwake 3 ะณะพะดะฐ ะฝะฐะทะฐะด
True. When I book the place, I ask the landlord to mark me down as tentative for the month and I will confirm with 72 hours when I am on the ground there. That keeps it open for an extension. Most will do it because I will be taking it for the month versus leaving it open and having someone take 2 days in the middle of the month and ruining the more steady income.

Once you verify, then also fly with a months supply in case it takes time to get your refills. Thanks for the great question. I will do a video on this.

I was surprised and dissapointed with this video because the rent was nearly 600 bucks for one month....really? Yes I understand your rationalle about the internet speed but it would seem that you could have found a hotel in the city center with internet speed for less. Otherwise, I really love and appreciate your genuine attitude and the vast amount of videos you offer for us to view...thank you.

Interesting video. Just wondering how difficult it would be to survive without speaking Spanish?
@VagabondAwake
@VagabondAwake 3 ะณะพะดะฐ ะฝะฐะทะฐะด
I am a little embarrassed to say ... I have been going to Mexico for 40 years and keep going back. I speak very little Spanish. I get by fine. I speak about 10 lines. Bathroom, beers, thank you, please, very good, where is, how much is, my name is, what is your name, vegetarian, does this have meat, fish, or chicken? If they don't speak English, they listen to you struggle for about 10 seconds and then go get the person nearby that speaks English. English means money in Mexico so they learn if they are in a tourist area. You will struggle more when you get off the beaten path, but that is when I use Google Translate. If I waited to learn the language before traveling around the world, my country count would be 5 instead of 65. I am not delaying travel because I am language lazy. I love it too much. Please subscribe if the mood strikes Phil. Best, Dan

@VagabondAwake

That is correct. Both are for only this apartment and each apartment on this property has its own exclusive kitchen and bathroom. Whenever we are done documenting a city we write a retire cheap report that includes everything we learned about that city. Places to stay, things to do, where to eat, and maps and links. Not a lot of information; too much random filler crap like tour of your rental. So the technique is to walk around looking for deal and call. This is such a crapshoot that takes more than two days. And if you find one, itโ€™s just so happens itโ€™s available for you to move in like now. Who post a for-rent sign for a 2 month rental? And forget about a 1 month rental.

You can see the length of the video before you watch it. Maybe you should choose shorter videos since your screen name clearly makes it obvious what is most important to you. Also, many of us do care about having good wifi when we travel. However, I will agree with you that it would have been nice to mention this was in Mexico much earlier.
