For those who don't quite understand, what he is saying is that there is a low level cut-out switch at approximately 4-a5 volts. So If the battery sits too long and drains, which it realistically should not if it's plugged into a tool because the tool has a low level switch to stop draining the battery before it reaches this criteria, the battery has a cut-out switch so it cannot charge. So by going into the battery and bypassing the little brain and directly charging the cells up above the brain cut-out threshold, he tricks the brain by bypassing it and giving the cells enough power to get the brain to open the passage for charging again. This works about 70-90% of the time, but if you have a burned out cell you need to revert to another video. Thanks for your great short video!

The question is, is the fact that the battery got to that state in the first place a sign that the battery and/or cells are going bad and it's going to happen again or more frequently? I just found a couple Ryobi 18v lithium batteries that I had misplaced several years ago. Not thinking they would charge, I put them in the charger and they charged right up. Certainly after several years they would have discharged fully.

There's a dozen or more of these videos on RU-vid, and I was happy I went with this one. Cuts to the chase; doesn't require me to hack my Ryobi charger. $15 trickle charger was worth the investment to get three formerly dead Ryobi lithium batteries in play again. Thanks for posting.

Look at your battery case to see if it offers pos and neg terminal markings. I was able to charge my battery without removing the casing/cover. Worked like a charm... took less than 30secs of holding the clips on the terminals before I plugged it back in to the ryobi charger and it started charging as usual. Thx for the video!

Yeah, I've repeatedly put them on and off the charger to "rejuvenate", sometimes 10+ times before they start charging. Used to have them not charge all the time and would use that trick... but learned to not run them down till they're dead when in the tools and none go bad anymore.

I sometimes try these RU-vid videos to fix things and they very rarely work. However, this time, everything worked perfectly and I know absolutely nothing about electronics! VERY clear instructions and showed me exactly what to do. I have no idea how to actually use a trickle charger or a multimeter but with this video I was able to fix my Ryobi 18 Volt battery and, more importantly, impress my wife with the blinking green light!!! Thanks so much for a great tutorial. I wonder if that process works on other similar batteries too. Keep up the good work. You are the MAN!

Had a Ryobi 18v battery that died and wouldn't charge so I marked it bad and had planned on throwing it away. Before I got around to throwing it away a much newer battery did the same thing. I was thinking I would have to buy a couple of new batteries. I decided to do a search to see if anyone else had the same issue and I came across this video. Being a retired mechanic, I had everything necessary to try this process and it worked great. Took the batteries apart as shown in the video and used a small 12v charger touching the leads to the batter for only 1 minute. Both batteries are now charging great. Thank you for your video!

this is better than most videos on this platform, but the key problem is that you should have a professional charger like the imax b6ac v2 and attempt to charge each individual cell that makes up the pack to its normal voltage. another thing to keep in mind is that although it might charge to full it could have bad cells which could be contributing to poor life. these individual cells would need to be replaced with ones of the same specs in order to prevent damage. as I said in the beginning this is a much better video than most and should work for many people. I would urge caution to inexperienced people who think that applying voltage is going to solve their problems. I have seen many things that are a safety hazard and many videos don't take safety as a priority. just to let you non electronics savvy people know that it's not so much the voltage that can kill you, but it is the amperage that will do it. most current above 100ma could be lethal! take extreme caution. if you don't feel comfortable, leave it to a professional.

After thaw, the charger showed GREEN - with a periodic FLICKER OF - RED. Hang on sloopy!! Initially I was disappointed thinking the Inet info was bad [tho told about the red flicker]). I waited about 45 minutes and the LED turned solid RED and began charging 4 hours later solid GREEN charged. It now once again powers my saw As Johnny 5 would say NO DISASSEMBLE! No Multimeter, no strange screwdriver tips, etc!!! TRY this route first. IF IT DONT WORK then do the disassemble route.

it's because the bms has no way to determine if the pack just has a dead cell or if one is actually shot, and when they become overly discharged and the individual cells aren't balanced there's always a risk of overheating and fire, that's the real reason why it happens. just take care of you're batteries, keep them out of temperature extremes and keep them charged up but don't over charge them. most people just use their drill once in a while and don't keep their packs charged. hot and cold don't help either.

Lithium batteries (depending on the actual chemistry) do not like to be totally discharged. To maximize battery life, don't let them discharge to zero. The battery packs have safety circuits that shuts the battery down when the battery discharges to a certain point, but the circuit needs a little power, and battery self-discharge keeps happening in the battery. A total discharged Lithium, similar to lead acid, battery will be permanently damaged. This fix by-passes the charge control and battery monitoring circuits and puts enough power back into the battery to power those circuits to enable charging. Good information, but be very careful to watch the battery pack during this process, because it can start a battery fire (don't leave battery pack connected if you leave the room.) Lithium chemistry is much more finicky to charging, and all those electronics in the battery pack and charger are doing a job. Bottom line is to keep Lithium battery packs charged 70-100% while in storage, and throw them on a charger every couple of months to keep them healthy.

First video that explains why the batteries will not charge and how to get it working again . Great video. I'm having trouble finding a small trickle charger like yours in the UK. Can anyone out there help?

You can use a regular 12v battery or a power supply. The one I used is just a 12v trickle charger 🍻

Slightly different problem. Battery reading fine (18V) on flat tabs inside but on the "tower" it is only reading 5.6-5.7V. Any ideas?

@ATEMOFFROAD Same here. My Stem reads 0.18 but my flat tabs read over 18V!!! Is there a way to fix this? I took apart two batteries just to test and the stem definitely read different and still cant charge. @davidrinaldis2351

I put mine in the freezer overnight and they almost always start to charge when plugged in. The other thing for really stubborn Li batteries is to take a 9 volt rectangular battery and 2 alligator clips and connect + to Ryobi + and - to -...about 15 seconds later the 9v battery gives the Li battery enough to appear alive and then you can charge. You don't have to disassemble the Ryobi to do either.

It’s just a small 12vdc trickle charger, this one I picked up at harbor freight for 8 bucks. Thanks for watching 🍻

I haven’t read all the comments, but do you think you can do it without taking the battery apart? Meaning hook the trickle charger to the positive and negative leads that would take the charge from the ryobi charger? I wasn’t sure if it was the BMS or the charger causing the issue.

I suspected it was the board and not the charger but some say it has worked the way you mentioned it! Also keep in mind you could have a bad cell , this is another reason why you would want to take it apart! Thanks for watching 🍻

All my new Ryobi tools use a different battery, in that the charger contacts are on the opposite end (and the bottom of) the normal battery insertion port for the tools. How this might effect overcoming a 'dead' battery scenario is a bridge I will cross when I come to it.

I think when you disassemble a battery you should use a battery screw driver ?

To make my 18v battery work all I had to do was take one 9 v battery I took two wires stripped each end taped the Positive to + and Neg to Neg for about 10 minutes then put it on my 18v charger and it will now charge ( no taking apart the battery

I have 10 Ryobi battery's all different sizes from the smallest 18v to the 5 ah and all of them quit working.u know that's a lot of money to replace all of them

And if you were to find a bad cell you could use the others as parts to make up good batteries 🍻

An 18V lithium pack has either 4 or 5 lithium cells in series. If you had only 4V from the pack, that makes 1V per cell average. When lithium cells are discharged below about 3V PER CELL, the cell is damaged PERMANENTLY. That’s why the charger refuses to charge it. Over discharged lithium batteries are DANGEROUS. They have a high propensity for “bloating” and/or catching fire when subsequently recharged. IF you choose to do this, NEVER bring the battery into your house/garage again. Charge and store it outside.

Older , worn out batteries should be recycled and replaced. Not repaired. The battery in the video was fairly new just a few uses. This is a known problem with the ryobi line of batteries. I still use this same battery on the same blower once or twice a week, every week since I have made this video no problems and still charges. I have noticed some degradation. 🍻
