Ok so as many of you guys know the outback is a great boat but the front hatch tends to leak in choppy conditions when water is coming over the bow. I spent hours trying to find a solution and after a couple experiments I finally found a qui and easy fix that will keep your boat bone dry!
Also remember to keep all round hatch O rings clean and lubed and they will never leak (I show the round hatches not leaking at the end of the video)
Here are the links to the two different weather striping I used:
The rubber push on seal (that goes on the hatch lip):
www.mcmaster.c...
Weather stripping for hatch lid:
www.amazon.com...
Marine goop to seal the seam (also used inside the grip of the weather stripping on the kayak hatch lip):
www.amazon.com...
Don't hesitate to ask any questions you might have. Hope this helps you guys out!

Thanks! Yea i know right! There’s got to be a way to do it that they don’t leak but this is a great solution. I replace the seal on the lid every couple years just to be careful.

Great Vid....Have two 2015 Outbacks the leak pretty bad from the front hatch...also have tried the shortening of the straps/grinding on one of them and same issue, not really a contact point on ours so I knew it wasn't the issue. Definitely will be doing this mod in the coming weeks. Thanks again.

Heyyy just got around to doing this yesterday. I am not 100% done yet as I have not marine gooped the seem. Question though - did you put marine goop on the entire hatch seal or just let it freely sit on the lip and only goop the seem? On my first water test (Again before using any goop anywhere) I still took on a bit of water (albeit a massive improvement), enough that over a long rainfall or a capsize event that it would probably become significant, so just want to clear up the goop/adhesion strategy before I do that part. Thanks again.

Chris Cass hey man. The only part i gooped was the seam where the gasket on the actual kayak (not the lid) meets. It’s tough to keep it neat and prevent it from dripping. I put a rag inside the hatch to catch ant drops. Hope that helped.

Great DIY!! If you want more Adhesion on the 3M Seal you might try heating the material before installing.....

Do you think placing a small bead of silicone around the gasket would also do the trick? Was about to pull the trigger on the new 2019 OUTBACK but now wanting to wait to see if 2020 will be redesigned. I know they now shipping 2019 with the top gasket seal and will ship free to those who already have purchased.

Have Yak, Will Travel I’m not sure I’m understanding what you are saying about the silicone.

Anybody know if Hobie has addressed this issue at the factory on new outbacks? Seems pretty shitty to spend $3K and have to make your own mods to keep water out.
@yakinwithbigfoot3832
@yakinwithbigfoot3832 5 лет назад
For the 2019 models yes. But earlier no. I came up with this idea a year ago and it works great. Hobie just recently came out with the same concept for the 2019’s.

Ok thanks for info. I could have sworn someone said the new 19’s were leaky too. Thanks again good job on the mod

Scot Mac sorry i must not have worded that properly. I meant to say that it is an issue with the 2019’s and Hobie has addressed it with a similar solution as mine. But they haven’t come out with anything for the older models.

Just curious, did you water test it with the new press on weather strip for the lip, without the top hatch weather strip. You had mentioned it was taller. Wanted to know if it sealed with out the installation of top hatch weather strip with the added height. If it works it may save a few bucks. Thanks for the tips
@yakinwithbigfoot3832
@yakinwithbigfoot3832 6 лет назад
Stephen Poole yes i did, it didn’t leak as much as the original liner and it was significantly less water. But i was super anal and didn’t want any water so i found that weather stripping and it kept all the water out.

@@yakinwithbigfoot3832 I would be the same way. I have a 2017 Outback and I discovered the hatch leak on her maiden voyage. I had three to four foot chop to get through and just getting blasted in the bow with all that water I discovered about two gallons of water inside. This could become very dangerous if your boat becomes swamped. I still can not believe this issue still exists with Hobie aware. Thanks for the repair video.

Stephen Poole no problem man. Yea i hear ya, but it looks like the new outbacks have a different hatch latch. Wonder if that helps.

To tighten the Hatch all you had to do was unscrew where the bungee is screwed into the kayak and shorten the cord
