How I Fixed My Mosquito Magnet

In this video I have a Mosquito Magnet that does not work. I decide to take it apart and try to repair it. The Mosquito Magnet is two years old, and this year (2024) would make it three years old. The first year after about 6 months of continuous use the power supply stopped working and I purchased a new one for around $50.00. The Mosquito Magnet was put away for the winter and on thew second year it would not work the power light just blinked. I worked on it some and ordered some CO2 cartridges to clean out the propane line but never got around to actually fixing the Mosquito Magnet. This year I decided to fix the unit or throw it away. Well, I took it apart and cleaned the thermistor. I checked everything else and reassembled the Mosquito Magnet. It has been working ever since.

This was my problem. Pulled the thermistor and cleaned it up with steel wool. Now it's working. I've spent many hours trying to solve the problem and you helped me get it working. Thanks for the video.

Hi there and thanks for this very interesting and detailed video. Thanks to you, I've been able to take apart the whole thing and look for the reason of this fast blinking red light. I had to use sand paper as well on the heat regulator and gas filter (same aspect than yours), I've checked the gas flow just like you did, and the gas is now definitely flowing through the nozzle, and still.. red light still blinking fast after 15min 😫 the only thing I've noticed is that the heater element remained cold during the whole session, it never glowed and staid at the same temperature all along.. initially I thought that was because I didn't opened the gas tank, but when checking your video, I knew that didn't come from this, as your nozzle was not in place when your heat element began to glow. soooo.. either the heater element is dead , or the PCB is not delivering the right tension to make it work. I've tried to look for this specific heat element as a spare part but was not able to find some replacement, at least not with this white plastic body around.. 🧐 by any chance, would you have any advice or hint for me ? Thnak you very much for your time and I wish you a great day Cheers

I have fixed quite a few of the older version. I always dismantle the burner and clean it in carburetor cleaner. I have had two with bad regulators on the tank. One would not light at all, the other would run a couple of hours and then quit. I fixed that one using the regulator from an old gas grill. I have another that will only light with a lighter. That one is just a spare unit.

Ran great for a year, did not work year 2. I did pretty much all you did in the video, still n/g. I had called Mosquito Magnet peeps and they said I had to take it to an authorized dealer ($100) for servicing which the only one in my area is 65 miles away. Dropped it off and when I was headed back home the tech called me back and said "It's Fixed". Really , that fast? Well, it worked for 1 tank of gas and stopped working again- Going to try what you did cleaning the thermmistor again.. or throw it out a window. When it did work, it worked great.
@diyhomefront1695
@diyhomefront1695 3 месяца назад
That is the big dilemma, when it works it really does a good job, but the m-magnet isn't cheap. I looked on-line for the thermistor and could not find one. Good luck with yours.

you might want to get some brass type small in size brushes. H.F. has some ect. now as far as your heated tip element, you can also clean it with these brass brushes and that also will help with a faster start up.

I watched this because i have been wondering how they work. But as a side note, I've had my magnet for about ten years and have been using it for about 5 or six of those years. Not a single issue to be had. I use 3 - 4 tanks a summer and i don't really clean it off or out to much at the end of the season. Works great. Really killed our alaska mosquito population.

@@diyhomefront1695 might be the quality of gas you get. Maybe try to get a few empty bottles and the next time your a couple hundred miles away from home, get them filled up there. I work at an oil and facility and I know how clean our gas is. If your in the south, the companies there might have a lower standard since freezing is less of an issue.

The white material on the temperature probe wasn't your problem. That's dried thermal paste which is mostly Zinc Oxide it's your friend not the enemy. It's there to help make a good thermal connection to the housing for a more accurate reading. I use it all the time on all of my thermal manifolds that I build. My guess is that you weren't getting propane though the really really tiny orifice in the valve. When you went in there and scraped the front of the nozzle I'm guessing you knocked off some gunk that allowed the propane to flow. That or you knocked enough stuff off the filter when you had it out. People really should use the CO2 cartridges for an easier time maintaining these units I'm surprised they don't come equipped with the adapter. Thanks for the video I wanted to see one of these units cracked open before I bought one. They look good. I'm excited that the wife and I can soon take back our backyard from these blood sucking vermin.

Well, I took mine apart, and it seemed as if the solenoid was not opening to release propane. So I removed the little plunger inside the solenoid. I cleaned my thermostat probe, tested the igniter, which was glowing red. When I turn the unit on, I can feel when the glow plug heats up , and this is when I turn on the propane. It will not light. But If I hold a flame in front of the nozzle, it will burn untill i let my thumb off the lighter. Could it be that my regulator is allowing too much propane through?
@diyhomefront1695
@diyhomefront1695 2 месяца назад
Sure could, I was told to keep the propane tank valve less than halfway open by one of the commenters. I am on my third tank of gas and each time I count the revolutions need to completely open the valve and close it back up three turns.
@pallie1000
@pallie1000 2 месяца назад
It makes sense , because i temporarily hooked an adjustable acetylene regulator to the unit , so I could put a little more gas to it . and it would not light that either. Thanks for the reply ! I guess I’ll try a new regulator before I throw it in the trash. Or I could part it out on eBay lol.

I’m currently INVESTIGATED in fixing mine. Still won’t work.. new tank, cycled many times. I hired glows cherry red, tested thermistor Ohms..works, disassembled the combustion chamber and cleaned, Solenoid has been disassembled and cleaned. Clicks on when it’s supposed to. Changed o-ring on the nozzle… EVERYTHING! My “eraser head”(filter) is still gold. But my last thing to try is to clean that by soaking it over night in some carburetor cleaner. After that….i guess it’s trash!

So.. I did get it working. But not for long. :( took a week off for a brain break from the thing. Gonna try and look into maybe the seals in the regulator. One might be faulty. Or the whole regulator itself. *sigh* Can you believe they are still selling these dang things in store!? They are so faulty after one season!

A Word of caution regarding the burner/filter apparature! In the film, the hole thing easily slips out when the screw is removed. In my unit, it would not come loose so I twisted it with a spanner. It kinda snapped and I kept twisting back and forth. Big mistake! For my model, you have to take the manifold apart in order to service the filter. Now I have an aluminium sleeve stuck halfway so that it covers the filter hex nut. I might have busted the hole thing😢. When you look close on the film you see that it's smooth on the sides where the screw is. On mine, there are some casting dots on both sides that makes pressure on the mentioned aluminium sleeve.

Before you disassemble your m-magnet try it with the gas turned down from all the way open or on to half or less open. I do not know for sure, but I have a filling in my gut that was my problem. Good Luck fixing yours, they are not cheap but when m-magnet works it does help with getting rid of the mosquitoes.
