What I noticed is that the time when I "didn't have any personal style" and just kinda wore whatever was the time when I was heavily depressed, hated my body, hated my job (a place where I spend the majority of my time) etc. I think it's very important to at least be at peace with the body you inhabit to want to dress it and express youself! I'm in a much better place right now, I actually think about my outfits, I get complimented a lot, which I like! Recently got inspired by your layering advices and wore my fav jeans with a mesh dress on top of it (might not be crazy by internet standards but I've seen 0 people wearing something like this IRL) and some random lady on the streets gave me a thumbs up, lol. So thank you, Liz, for helping me express myself and feel like a superstar 💕

I really relate to this. I recently realized that most of my closet was acquired while I was in a burnout. My weight had also changed, and I was just buying whatever seemed to fit. I’m feeling much better lately, and with the inspiration of Liz and a few others, I’m thrifting items that feel energized and more like myself. Thanks for sharing your story- it’s comforting to hear from others who had similar experiences.🌸

@@abbyz9790 Personally, I started seeking out images and videos from people who seem confident with their fuller figures- I found it much easier to recognize how Beautiful they were, whereas I judged myself. And I got outfit inspo from them, including stuff I thought wouldn’t work for me, but looks great! Also, I started searching for thrift clothing that “sparked joy” for me, in the size I am Right Now. I’ve put away the smaller size clothes I loved, in case I can fit them again, but out of sight, no more guilt. I’ve been gradually building a new wardrobe that makes me happy as I am now. The frumpy stuff just made me feel worse. (PS And, since I don’t always have success looking for cute stuff in my size, I make sure I only shop on good-energy days, taking water and snack so I don’t leave exhausted and tearful. I take a tape measure too, so I can quickly eliminate stuff that won’t work without having to try it on.) Hope this might help a little. It’s definitely a journey of self-acceptance 💖

I feel like I’ve been somewhat similar in a way. I too didn’t know my personal style until my mental health got better. The period when I wasn’t doing well mentally was the time I was the most into following aesthetics rather than wearing my own personal style. I think part of me thought I had to fit into some type of niche to feel happiness because the people I saw with these aesthetics looked happy. It was also just easy to follow someone else’s outfit recipe when I myself lacked the mental and physical energy and motivation to come up with my own. Settling for some preexisting outfit I saw on Pinterest felt comfortable at the time cause it meant I could conserve my energy for something else rather than spend it all on figuring out what to wear. But I think the flaw in how I viewed fashion during that period is that I never truly felt like myself in my outfits. I was just trying to push myself into boxes I didn’t fit into in hopes that a new aesthetic would somehow be the answer to my problems. I was more or less cosplaying the people I saw on tiktok and Pinterest rather than dressing as myself. The aesthetics never lasted and I was hopping from one aesthetic to the next when I got bored. As soon as I got a little better mentally I realized I wasn’t actually following aesthetics because they were my style, but because I was longing for something I didn’t have wich was the happiness and interesting lives the people in the Pinterest photos seemed to have. Once my mental health got a little better it became easier to figure out my own personal style because I actually gained the energy and motivation to be creative. I feel like over time my personal style has actually become more and more simple and basic wich was something I was terrified of being when I was depressed because I viewed basic as sad and boring. Now I’ve grown to realize it’s not sad and boring unless you make it sad and boring. I fell much happier dressed in a comfortable sweater and blue jeans than when I tried to fit into niches that weren’t me. I feel like I’m truly confident in my outfits now because I feel like me in them. My personal style is practical and comfortable, but also fashionable and timeless and me.

Oh man I felt that "being more confident to wear out there outfits around strangers than around people I know" mood down to my core. I do more experimentation when just working from home or going to the grocery store or walking around the park than I do when going to visit my folks. I mean, they wouldn't say that and my family does comment on how out there my outfits are, but I'm sitting there thinking "this is nothing, fam."

One hundred percent agree with your take on style! Also, I find as an older person, when I dress quirky or interesting out in public, I get tons of positive feedback from people much younger than myself. I think it makes people happy and gives them the courage to dress more authentically as well.

When you were talking about how personal style fluctuates and how you can mix and match different vibes and dress completely different from one day to another, I thought about how restrictive we tend to be with style and how we don't apply it to many other things. Like no one is going to look at you weird if you're eating a salad today and a soup tomorrow, or drinking apple juice even tho you usually drink orange juice... Also, if I had to pick two colors to wear for the rest of my life, I guess it would be yellow and pink hehe

A small confidence hack that always works for me when I'm chickening out on wearing a more OUT THERE item - I imagine someone else showing up at the party in something similar and everyone complimenting her, would I feel jealous? Or would I not care? If I know I'd be jealous, then I wear the thing and wear it confidently! If I decide I wouldn't care, I let myself chicken out and go with something more normie/comfortable/lowkey and wear that confidently!

I appreciated the bit of commentary on the internet's obsession with fitting everyone's style into a certain aesthetic! I love light academia & y2k & cottagecore & rock n roll & granola girl & vintage & a million other type vibes, I hate feeling like I need to fit everything I am into a pinterest keyword. That's one thing I love about your channel--- your style is your own, it can't really be boiled down or confined!

As a naturally eclectic person, I found themes in my clothes: I like high-contrast items, texture, and bold, simple shapes. But not frills, delicate shades, or ditsy prints. So any item from any aesthetic that suits my themes, is an option for me. I love mixing it up.

Well said about personal style evolving! As my body has changed, I don't feel like wearing my old style. I think that if I don't feel confident in an outfit, it's a sign that it's not fully "me", and it means that I need to change some parts of the outfit. I can admire an outfit on someone else, but it doesn't mean that I even want to wear it myself, or that I should feel bad if don't feel comfortable wearing it. That said, I admit adjusting my outfits to suit the occasion and people I'm around 😆

Do consider that not feeling confident can also occur when we do something for the first time(s) and not just if it's not "you". This new piece might be absolutely your style but you first need to get used to wearing it before fully being able to embrace it!

I think something I noticed personally is that having confidence kind of came with wearing stuff that is 'my style'. Like I felt more comfortable in those clothes and like myself so it kind of just felt right so I wasn't uncomfortable or self conscious. Another big thing is I recently moved cities and started university so nobody knew me or what I used to dress like so it gave me a fresh start, I also got medicated for my anxiety so that definitely helped a lot lol

That's also why I find it hard to declutter my closet - all of the items I no longer wear were me, and I still love them a lot. They're just not things I gravitate towards now. I like how you answer the question on how to find your style on a more philosophical instead of a practical level. Your view on how to "find"your style has now totally changed my perspective on what "style" means to me. I like that you say that your style is what you feels the most comfortable in and that it keeps changing throughout your life. I also felt very validated that I thought that I never fit into one particular style, but instead its totally normal to have a combinations of different styles. You are so articulate in expressing your thoughts and I love that you are so understanding and inclusive about the experiences of women regarding their race, size etc. WE STAN!!!

About finding your personal style: what you said exactly, I found that it really is just a mix of what you like, what you are comfortable wearing, and what your lifestyle "requires" (used very loosely here). Having a lot of visual imputs is really what makes a difference! Like sometimes I want to cosplay as a business/coorporate girlboss à la legally blonde, sometimes I want to be a small village equivalent of sabrina the teenage witch, sometimes I would rather look like I know every secrets of the humanity department of my university. It's so fun once you start to really get creative with your wardrobe. I actually don't mind try something new/out of the ordinary with friends/complete strangers but sometimes when I am in my small town where I kind of know everyone I feel uncomfortable and I second guess myself from wearing something that's out of the ordinary. That's why I try to soft-launch (?) bold items until I'm comfortable with all the look lol. My favourite clothing colours are also blue and green (my closet is already full of it), a strong contender is red though. And I would absolutely love a mermaidcore video!! I didn't even know it existed

purple and blue would be my pick for only being able to wear 2 colours, I would love to see a video on mermaid-core! I've definitely found that social norms and being a larger woman makes it very difficult to wear clothes that actually make me feel like me cause I can barely find them, also thrift stores don't exist where I grew up or where I live, or when they do they have like 50 items max and I'll never find something I can actually wear and I don't want to contribute to over consumption and synthetic fabrics are awful, and thus far I haven't had the time to learn the skills required to make the type of clothing I want. Ah this is a really great video! I get similar questions too. And I think two things I've learned since starting to dress how I want 3 years ago is 1. many different styles is OK if that makes you happiest (I am a vintage dresser and I feel as though there is a lot of influence 'pressure' to dress in one certain era but I have found mixing eras even in one outfit is what I like most and makes me feel less 'costumy'), and 2. easing into wearing your new style is quite important at the beginning. Luckily I started doing it during lockdown in 2020 so the transition into public was slow. And if anyone stares at me it's either they love or they're jealous haha! So all good in the end. At work I definitely tone it down a little (maybe not the loudest fabrics or the shortest cuts) but even there I've gotten more and more confident wearing bright colours and lots of fun accessories, headscarves etc. and recently people have been telling me they love it and look forward to seeing my outfits. Often you bring joy to other people without realising, but most importantly has to bring joy to yourself. Oh and another thing! I feel like there's a big focus on the moment on reducing your wardrobe but I tried minimalism for a while and it just didn't work for me. So I think that if you have a big wardrobe, but you really love and wear all of the pieces that's also totally fine and sustainable ! Not necessarily consuming more, but using what you have.

As a 55 year old woman, I often feel like like certain clothes are looked down on for my age group. I still love jeans, graphic tees. Flannel, and funkier pieces. But I feel like people are more critical of an older woman wearing a trendy item. The fact is, I don't feel 55. When we get to a certain age I feel like we are expected to just fade into the background and let the younger people shine, but that's not how I want to live my life. Am I looking for attention? No. But I want to be able to wear what I love and what makes me, me without judgment, and sometimes it's hard. I would love to hear your opinion on this. From a younger person's perspective.

I totally get you on being more comfortable in crazy outfits around strangers! I'm the same. Except I don't mind dressing weird in front of my friends. It's people that kind of know me (but also not really) I'm worried about. Like people I went to school with, that one nosy neighbour that spreads gossip, people who give me the weird looks that I somehow always manage to stumbe upon, etc. I've noticed that I'm much more worried about everyone staring at me in my hometown compared to the city I'm currently studying in. I've gone all out with my outfits in the city and I feel much more confident, because hardly anyone there knows me. Plus there's so many different people with different styles, so I don't feel too out of place. But I feel like I'm most experimental with my outfits when visiting other cities/towns where literally no one knows me. But then again, yesterday I looked like a 16th century peasant walking around my hometown, so I'm pushing myself to wear whatever I like and care less about staring and strangers' opinions.

wow everything you said at the beginning was right on! i don't hear people talk about personal style in that way much these days, because the majority are obsessed with emulating a "-core" style. i've never fit into one specific aesthetic box and i've learned it's okay to dress completely differently from one day to the next depending on my mood! it's so freeing coming to that realization and i wish more people talked about it! also everything you said about your personal style changing at different points in your life as you grow and change as a person was perfect!

I tend to be a very colorful dresser, but I also feel freer & more confident to wear out there outfits around strangers than around people I know. This is especially true at concerts, festivals, cons and events where everyone is going all out (like Pride parade). It is also true when I go on vacation, since no one there knows me.

I absolutely love how you think and answered these questions! The 'How to find your personal style?' type of videos usually just make me slightly anxious, because I for sure can't narrow my style preferences down to something coherent, so your answer was truly a breath of fresh ar! And yeah, it is easier for me too to wear more out there outfits outside of my normal circle, aka hometown. But I also comfortable enough to do that with family and I'm getting better at going out in my hometown as well. If I feel my outfit could be a bit too much I resort to the thought that it's only good to cause a little disturbance in the minds of the people in this place~ Ooh, this questions are difficult! Ok, for colours my 'obvious' choice would be pink and white but I choose yellow and purple, because in light colours they can be super cute, they pair well together AND they have cool and edgy varieties as well. YES FOR A MERMAID CORE VIDEO, PLEASE, THANK YOU~! My answer is actually same, the frills, light fabrics, shiny finishes and just seashell-shaped things are really calling out to me. Totally lived for H20 when they aired it here. Also lace in the trends, yes for lace! If I ask, I'll go for bob cut and then grow it out for like a year before doing it again. This was a thign for several years :D Usually I just ask them to just take as much out as they need to get my hair healthy and then maybe to have some long-ish fringe to frame my face on both sides. ALSO, your hair always looks so good! Favourite fabric... I love mesh (soft ones) and velvety textures a lot. Wow, this is a whole essay for no particular reason. Oh well, I guess it just shows how much I enjoy your content and like to engage with it^^

Personally I actually disagree that my style when I was in hs/early college was actually my style, because in reality it was heavily dictated by religion and the fear of being judged for wearing certain things. Not to say this is universal, just the way that I experienced dressing myself in my religion while I was practicing. Ever since I've left though, the whole world of fashion opened for me and my style has changed drastically, and I actually feel like myself. Whereas before, I felt like a presentation of what I was supposed to be/like.

Totally agree with this. As someone with a very conservative upbringing, there was a lot of shame around wearing what I wanted to/felt like myself in and I’m still getting over that.

I totally agree with everything you said in this video but something more prevalent that stands out to me each time I hear you talk is how freking smart and humble you are. The way you articulate your thoughts, reflections and opinions you have, to me signifies you're waaaayy above average in terms of intelect. At the same time I find you really humble, kind and charming, which makes me love your videos more each time you post. I rarely leave comments on RU-vid, let alone such lengthy ones, but I had to tell you I really admire you and think of you highly 😄 I don't think it matters what a stranger on the internet thinks, but I hope you see the things your loving followers see in you 💞

If I had to dress in only two colors forever, they would be navy and sage green - although I'd like to say navy and red. I totally agree with you about style and confidence. I also totally agree about natural fibers.

My answer to the question: what would be the 2 colors I’ll be wearing for the rest of my life? Black & red/purple: because 80% of my closet is black & red is a cool color to add some dimension it also looks very cool/ punky with black!🥰😍

If I could only wear 2 colors, I'd pick green and brown because I'm a bit of a peppermint and brown is the same as orange so I could get some dark oranges in there that still read as brown and I love orange with green.

Working somewhere that provides you with a specific uniform solely based on their own company image bothers me. I knew I hated wearing a uniform when the only thing I could do to express myself was to wear earrings and change my make up routine. Needless to say, I hate wearing uniforms because it inhibits the ability for self expression and makes me feel guilty for buying street clothes because I can’t wear them unless it’s a day off. Very frustrating.

Purple is my favorite color. However, I don't own a lot of purple clothing. Black and gray are my second and third favorite colors. So, if I had to choose only two colors, it would most likely be black and gray.

Hi Beep , I love this !! 💗👍💗 Style is personal growth and understanding stages of life and living . You are a very smart young lady , you seem very well grounded and very well read . It seems there are so few who live ' there lives ' and spend so much time trying to live up to other peoples standards 🤯 Being an individual and expressing that freedom should be a God given right to every free person . However the society we live in , can at times , seem very cold and self centered , as if they would have a better way . I guess the free people and free thinkers of our world are being judged for all the wrong reasons . I love your style and your videos , always a breath of freedom and self expression and self love . There needs to be more - us -- and far less -- them !! Life is short , why not live ? Take care , Dreamer 

I was raised in a cult, and after i left i would "practice" wearing sleeveless shirts while playing games in my apartment and as pajamas (they are so comfy and cute). It took a while but now i can go out for groceries in jeans with a bralette and a leather jacket:D I get a lot of compliments as well (from other alt people mostly) but i have gotten a few scoffs of disdain from boring people, which was honestly pretty funny

I have a question about how do you use the vogue runway app? as in, I used to read vogue through emails (lol) and I would check out the shows that the articles talked about for inspiration, but there were so many boring shows that I got tired of it eventually. However, there are also too many shows in their list for me to even know where to start on my own. I have just been checking asian street style fashion from time to time, but how do you do it? Also if I had to choose 2 colours they'd be black and green :)

Apparently I'm going to use this comment box as therapy and vent. 😅 I don't know my style, maybe because I have too many, this also applies to house decor. If I had a staff of 100 cleaning people I would decorate with a cross between a gypsy wagon with jeweled moroccan colors, rock a billy and a bit of chenille but also vintage pinup clutter, mixed with a googie jetson look but I hate cleaning and I hate things that aren't clean so I can only visit places with the esthetics I like and live with a more streamline, modern, mid century or plain look. I say that just to make it known it's not just my clothes that I rarely feel my authentic self in. Partly since I've gain weight, it really is harder to find clothes that speak to me, possibly because I haven't yet accepted the weight gain but also I think there are less "cute" clothes available. But also I don't have the eye for seeing something I love and then sticking it on my body and then pulling it together with the shoes, bags, jewelry that mske it come together instead of ruining what I was trying to do. I swear just like some people can sit down at a piano and bang out something amazing and others can't, some people can throw on a dress and instantly know what other pieces to add to make it work for the look they want. So even tho I want to dress like Stevie Nicks I mostly just wear jeans, a concert t-shirt and birkenstocks (because other shoes make my feet ache)

When it comes to confidence - fake it til you make it always works - no one can read your mind so what they see on the outside is what they figure is you. He

Personally my anxiety always tell me that people are laughing and criticising me each time I’m out in public so I’d rather wear something that feels like me. And usually people who come up to me are always saying nice things (like that girl who literally jump out of her car to say she loved my outfit 🥹)
