How I found my voice after religious abuse - Brigette Gildemaster

Today I spoke with Brigette Gildemaster, who believed in Jesus from a young age and was dedicated to living her life for him, but deconverted as her experience with religious abuse prompted her to examine the truth claims of Christianity, which ultimately fell apart.
We touched on many topics, including:
• Growing up in a deeply Christian, legalistic household, with her parents embracing a Reformed Presbyterian belief system.
• Never doubting her faith in her early years but struggling with the concept of being inherently sinful.
• Feeling internal conflict between her desire to lead and the traditional gender roles imposed by her Christian community.
• Experiencing different Christian worship styles, which sparked curiosity about exploring the faith in different ways, but continuing to see overly emotional worship as wrong.
• Feeling immense pressure to marry and have children, which led her to push aside career aspirations.
• Healing from her first husband’s porn addiction and emotional distance.
• Experiencing multiple miscarriages and caring for a child with significant medical needs.
• Reflecting on her homeschooling experience, which discouraged higher education and personal growth outside of domestic roles.
• Slowly realizing that Christianity's teachings were abusive and confusing.
• Unpacking how her emotions had been suppressed within the Christian environment.
• The importance of reclaiming her personal autonomy after leaving behind toxic religious and marital structures.
• Advocating for people recovering from religious and romantic abuse.
• Helping others to reclaim their autonomy after leaving rigid belief systems and to find empowerment through storytelling and emotional healing.

Thats the problem when the church tells you not to marry for love but marrying to please God… I’m in that situation. I struggle with my wife as I felt so pressured by the church and her to get married and I prayed. I thought it was the right thing to do and I have never been so miserable in my life. But I have these two beautiful children that i can’t imagine not seeing every night. Religion ruins peoples lives

I am on the other side of that nightmare. My kids are grown now but I have so many regrets since I got married because of Christianity. We followed purity culture and found out after marriage how we were a terrible match. The only advice I can give you is keep the kids’ best interests first. It is not healthy for them to grow up with parents hating each other and gritting their teeth to “stay together for the kids.” I decided I wanted them to see me happy away from their mom instead of miserable with her, and I stayed super involved in their lives and kept a civil relationship with their mom.

Brigette. YOU are an inspiration!!! I love everything about this interview , so raw and real!!! I really understood on a new level about how the religious trauma can set us up for relationship trauma. I could so relate to not knowing about red flags🚩🚩. This was a very powerful video. As a man who has raised 3 daughters and 1 trans son, I am here to say that just BECAUSE you are a man, doesn’t mean you are wholly qualified to lead or otherwise CAPABLE of anything! Age, biology and gender alone do NOT equal ability, intelligence, or competence. And they certainly don’t indicate maturity, emotional or otherwise. Kudos to you for finding your way and continuing to find it, Bridgette. And thank you once again, Tim, for a video that is SOOOO needed right now. Thanks to you both.

I remember having a discussion with an IFB pastor one Sunday afternoon about the divorce and remarriage issue. I asked him if he relegated the seventeen qualifications for a bishop listed in (I Tim 3) to the present tense or past tense when assessing whether a man can pursue leadership? His response: The sixteen out of seventeen were present tense. However, the husband of one wife was considered past tense and therefore disqualifies a man from becoming a pastor. As a follow-up question, I asked him if that also meant a widower would be unfit if he chose to remarry? He of course said no because he was loosed. But I pushed him again on the issue and said how could that be, because wouldn't that mean the man would no longer be the husband of one wife? He then began the typical IFB linguistical gymnastics. The conversation ended when I pointed out to him that C.I Scofield had been divorced and remarried but in spite of that fact he continued to recommend and use the Scofield Study Bible. I additionally pointed out that when the King James Bible uses the word marriage it didn't mean a wedding ceremony. Me and my family never attended that church again. Thanks for having people like Bridgette on here to expose this nonsense. I'm glad she broke free from these most toxic environments.

When I think of Presbyterians, I always think of John Knox, the fiery, intolerant, conservative preacher of Scotland. 😠 Definitely a good idea to date and find out if your partner is physically, mentally, and emotionally compatible with you. 🎉
