Also important to note... you might be feeding your post track faders shit, if something way down left in the chain is pushing to hard, such as your synth, etc. Good to use some control at the beginning of your chains, like a utility, and also make sure your sounds are in check, on their own, such as he did in the drum rack. Not a big fan of early track limiters or putting a limiter on your master, when your mixdown is not done. For me, its always good to plan in headroom, early, as your track faders are going to run out of it, if you don't. My normal rule of thumb is to set all my tracks at -6db and do whatever I need to do on an early utility. Still going to mix them later, but with headroom. Good to monitor LUFS instead of just loudness (but don't sub to a certain LUFS, just because that is what everyone else is doing), on the master - SPAN is also your friend, to help you fill out the frequencies and get somewhere close to where a genre specific reference track is.
