Hell yeah man, my story is almost exactly the same. Apartment maintenance doesn't pay shit for all the different things we do. We're skilled technicians doing thousands of dollars worth of work a week to make a few hundred bucks. That is why I'm totally diggin this guy. I've been wanting to branch out on my own and get side work, I just don't really know many people. This guy is golden for sharing this knowledge.

That"s called up selling. Some people get carried away with it. It does work for making more money. The fear-monger approach isn't something I use and its not taught in any of the books I read.

The Handyman Yeah. "You can fix this pipe for $300 but it's a really old sprinkler system. We can install a state of the art sprinkler system for you for $4000." That's upselling. "This is just the leak you know about. In such an old sprinkler system there could be other leaks you don't know about until a lot of built up water under your deck or porch suddenly causes your foundation to cave in one day. We've seen it happen. For $4000, we'll replace the whole thing." That's fear-mongering.

I agree with you that's a pretty bold sales tactic.

It is funny, we live in a part of our town that, for some reason, is clearly tagged as affluent. Sure, there are parts of it that are, but many not so much. As a result, we'll either get the "tax" charged/quoted to us, or people don't show up at all LOL. Fortunately, I handle most handy stuff myself, but it is funny. When I was in sales you bet you Zillow home prices. You need to know the environment you're walking into.

How many people live in your city. I started with a box of business cards for Vista Print. I gave them to all friends and family. They hand them out to everyone they knew and it started to spread. It took me 3 years to start making decent money and 6 years to start making really good money.

I agree with both of you and him, personally I give breaks to elderly people, and people that I can tell may be in a rut.

First never call yourself a handyman. Do the market research on the demographics of your target customers. Age, family size, family income, education level. Be the professional they are use to dealing with in their day to day life.

I will answer your questions based on my personal experience. You should know how long a job will take to know how many hours you would be putting in, the cost of materials, gas, and insurance, and what quality of work you do compare to what's out there. You doing shatty work but expecting top dollar is unrealistic. Secondly, what are you expecting if you put in a 40-hour week? So for example, I am not that good at spackling but I will repair a wall, I will put time into watching a video or two, maybe even practice on some sheetrock to get better at it but I need to make 1000 a week for this to be worth my time. So I say 1000 divided by 40 equals 25. So gas might cost me 40 in a pickup today, I have to drive 1 hour there and one hour back and I have to let it dry and come back tomorrow to sand and paint and clean up. So the total between drive time 4 hours, work 4 hours and 25 in materials 40 in gas. So you see his price of around 275 was good. Now once you have the experience you know this is the going rate but to increase the profit you might use a quick-drying compound and finish it in the day. So you have to factor in experience, know-how, time, and what won't scare the customer off. As for someone I have driven to and looked at the job and given an estimate, how I eliminate wasting my time I try to feel people out. If they seem like they jerking my chain I will tell them, "Hey, I would love to help you but you and I know at today's gas prices I can come to give an estimate which is 25 dollars if you give me the job I will deduct it from the cost of the repair." Or you can then turn around if you hear them being hesitant and say well I like to do it in person because maybe I might miss something, or I might miss in the photo I can give a guestimate by video but it could be more or less once I'm in person. You give them options that do not waste your time so if they do not call back I have not lost anything and if I go to give an estimate I got gas money to cover travel for free. Once you show professionalism people get the message that you're not here to play games. I do not do a lot of talking, I give them the price and let them figure it out. People also like the word guarantee my work. I also sell people basic maintenance plans. Fees for just in case. I do a bi-weekly home and yard inspection, and they always find some minor thing for me to do. It cost 750 yearly and it always leads to me being the person they get used to managing the house for them. Those customers get a 10 percent discount on all jobs done. Their family becomes my family. Once in a while, I will fix something and not charge them a penny. They love me. As for a free estimate by phone? Again I advise that I come to look, if it is something simple I ask them, "This is what I would charge but in these times what would be something that would make you tell me to come to fix it now?" They often have a price in their head and will go about 50 dollars lower than it. So they say well I needed this door hung and was only looking to spend 300. If it's a slow day and it's a few hours why not go do it? That's 300 no one else will give you! Get into their minds and think like a homeowner struggling. Keep in mind everyone watches a RU-vid video before they call you or google what should be the price. Try doing that yourself and see what numbers might come up and if it's something you can live with. To me, I'm just trying to pay my bills and might not ever get rich but die trying. BEST OF LUCK

Noone cares! Some people may think that your too new if you have new tools. But every tool needs replacement eventually so nee tools will have to be baught and used at some point!

Most crucial steps in being successful and profitable was going to college and getting a construction management degree then working as superintendent and project manager for 10 years for the largest home builder in the country. After all that. Running a handyman business is very easy and extremely profitable. The actual work is easy too. Two generations ago every man knew how to do all the things I do in my videos.

When I tune 46 I'm cutting back to just simple repairs. My wife replaces knees for a living. She says there are two new ones in my future if I keep up the pace that I'm going.
