Those small light weight buckets you can find at lowes in the paint dept are perfect for catching whatever may come out of a P-trap when opening. Will save you a lot of potential headache and cleanup 😀

$275 with little to no overhead is awesome. And I still find it funny that rental property owners charge an arm and a leg for rent, but put Band-Aids on everything and anything that break's. Good idea as far as mentioning how the landlord wanted it fixed. Not sure where you're from but again $275 for 45 minutes is Great. By the way how did you get started and what would I have to do ? Do you have to be licensed? Insured? Experience? 2 THUMBS UP and consider me a subscriber.👍👍

To fully test for leaks after pt install, you should fillup the sink with water first then pull the drain plug. This will make sure it doesn't leak under pressure. There is no pressure just running water. As always, I do enjoy your vids.
@TheHandyman1

This is very true. When I get plumbing inspections the inspectors always fill the sinks up then let them drain.

Excellent video - these prices is why I do all repairs myself. Most are not that challenging and I’d rather spend my money on something else. But for a property manager who’s not spending his own money makes total sense. It sucks that they won’t even pay the little extra to get a proper trap.

I like that. He acknowledges the don't fix it.. just fix it mentality of the owner that is renting... Those drain pipes were so misaligned that the only thing that fit was that flimsy adjustable p trap.. Which will probably break, split... I had a misaligned trap that I worked 2 hrs on.. another just fix it situation.. With a slow drain pipe leak at the joint... Finally put one of those red bushings on the part of the trap joint and put the white collar type nut on and then put the assembly together.. Finally it did not leak.. Which goes with my saying... They put it together the wrong way.. Now you need to fix it the wrong way... Because the owner dont want to pay... But make sure you tell him/her first that you are not to be held responsible for anything that happens there after.. it really needs to be taken all apart and fixed properly.. And that they dont get to call you to go back for free if it happens again in another given amount of time like 3 to 6 months... In fact you might say.. this might work or hold for now until it can be fixed right in about a year. By the way.. dont mess with supply water problems that are leaky becuase that could cause a major flood if the unorthodox repair doesnt work.. Just my thoughts.

For the drain I would fill the sink up with water and then open drain. The forces and the pressures that are exerted throughout the system help find leaks quickly😅

You should have used a 6' ladder for that light with a paint tray shelf for your screw gun and to place things. I imagine you left dirty finger prints on that wall climbing on and off. Once you tweak a muscle climbing and balancing in a awkward position, you'll figure this out. Speed and ease is all about physical leverage for most odd jobs.

I like this series, the more of these videos you do the more I am thinking of switching the scope of my side business to be more handyman type of jobs. Trying to find reliable woodworking/ cabinetmaking jobs isn't working for me. Woodworking is pretty much a dead business, and cabinet making I have to be careful what jobs I take on due to the fact my day job is working 40 hrs a week in a different cabinet shop. So time and the size of my shop is an issue. I have to find the right jobs that work for me.
@TheHandyman1
@TheHandyman1 7 лет назад
I actually started picking up jobs making cabinets. The metro area I live in is filled will millions of millennials literally millions. They all want custom mudroom storage cabinets. Like these www.pinterest.com/pin/168885054749334938/ I get about $3500 to $5000 for white cabinets with the bench. I would not be able to survive on just handyman jobs. The remodel jobs really pay the bills.
@Mopardude
@Mopardude 7 лет назад
At my day job about every house we do these days we do a mudroom like that too. I don't have a construction background to get into remodeling. I am not looking at doing handman work as a means to and end. Looking at it more to increase the money flowage for now to do what I want later. Part of the problem is I work for a fairly high end custom cabinet shop, 90% of our work is multi million dollar homes. So my contacts that can get me work, is work that is unreasonable to do with a 1 man 20x30 shop in a 3 months time period, to pump out 100K in cabinets for 1 house. I like to think I am good but I am not that good. LOL
@TheHandyman1
@TheHandyman1 7 лет назад
Wow a $100k in cabinets that's some serious work. You can definitely make an extra $500 to a $1000 a month doing handyman work on the side.
@Mopardude
@Mopardude 7 лет назад
Well 60-80K is average job for us. Kitchen, and bar, buffet, laundry room or 2, 4 or 5 vanities, it all adds up. Bigger houses push 100K. I mean when your droppin a few million on a house 100K is nothing really.

Thanks for another good video of random things. It would be handy (pun intended) if you could give us some idea of the how the $275 compares to other economies/currencies. I'm a handyman in Australia, and while our Dollars may be similar they are not the same, so I'm trying to gauge what price would be comparable over here. Maybe some indication of cost-of-living figures or average wages in your area would be indicative. Eg, the price of an average take-out meal, or the average hourly wage/earning for a regular employee / trades-person. I think I'm not charging enough for my services, so I'm working on what to charge, and what to do, to be more profitable. Your videos have been a great help. Thank you.

Property managers, meh. More like 'rent collectors.' I understand when they say to do it quick, not right, but I love when they, the experts they are, tell you it's a minor job, should only take 10 minutes. Then there is 40 minutes of moving tenants' crap. That kitchen sink almost looked staged. I usually gotta remove pots/pans, junk, mounds of reuseable grocery bags (because we're green and charged for bags out here in CA, so they'd rather let them rot and mildew for the next batch of food).

@TheHandyman1
@TheHandyman1 7 лет назад
I don't give out my location. I would recommend they you move to a metro area will millions of people. Small towns and cities Its hard to make a good living. Success in this business has to do with your customer service and how you can sell your services. The actual labor is the easy part. How long have you been in the military? I know a lot of guys that went in when they were young and are actually retiring at age 40 and starting a new career. Keep in mind being self employed you have no benefits, no paid sick days, no vacation days, no retirement. And you have to pay more taxes. Its called the self employment tax. I pay about 40% of what I make to taxes. The trick is to have a good accountant to find you business tax deductions so you don't have as much income to pay the tax on. Hope this helps.

As a plumber that does quality work. Replacing that trap would've taken less than 5 minutes. And it would save them more troubles down the road. Keep that in mind. Which the drop itself could contribute to the smell. Too long of a drop into the trap. Shorten the drop, new trap, bet the smell goes away. And it would get rid of that God awful flex line. Outside of that, you do fine work. Just learn a bit more about plumbing. Your rates will go higher then lol.
@mrandyhle
@mrandyhle 5 лет назад
Justin Dewan you should learn more about business, then you’ll get more work offers. Replacing trap wouldn’t of been hard for him, clearly. But he’d also have to ask him if they’d want to do that. And he mentioned that they just wanted him to get in and fix the issue, not solve it.

Location plays the largest role in my pricing. Most of the houses you see me in sell for over $500,000 most are in the high $600k to mid $700k. Big city with very few blue collar workers. That happens form time to time. knowing your local market and what your competition charges is how I set my pricing. I was a superintendent for 7 yeas after college, building houses and condos. Having that work experience makes estimating and pricing remodels/handyman jobs really easy.

You can charge like you working for somebody or you can be that somebody and make real money. When I charge I don't charge like a regular Monday-friday job if you looking for regular pay stay at your regular job.

Yes I can. I have a video on that exact project. Most plumbers have an IQ of around 87. Someone with an IQ of 120 can do this shit with their eyes closed.

Do you have a contractors license?. Here in NM we can't touch anything that is connected to power or water. So we can't touch faucets, plumbing, toilets, light fixtures, ceiling fans. We have to have at least a GB2. And we can't make more than $7200 a year.

It is. It's normal practice to make it a half-hot recep, so the dishwasher and disposal are powered in the one place hat meets code.

How do you come up with 275 for an hours work? Would you mind itemizing that for us? I am starting a new handyman business and would like some insight into charging practices whenever I can. Thanks.
@TheHandyman1
@TheHandyman1 6 лет назад
I don't itemize my work I come up with a number that I think the customer will will pay. I have gotten pretty good at it over the last 10 years. I charge it the top 25 percent of what the market will allow.
@jimh2061
@jimh2061 6 лет назад
Look at it like this. If you have to get a plumber and an electrician out there it's 135 minimum for a service call so that alone is 270 but the management company doesn't know them and will have to meet with them to let the in and wait and lock up. It's easier to call someone you know and tell them to take care of it.

do you charge by the hour or by the job?
@TheHandyman1
@TheHandyman1 5 лет назад
Always by the job never by the hour.
@maryjuanmercogliano4351
@maryjuanmercogliano4351 5 лет назад
If they are not busy, most handymen charge the most they figure the customer is willing to pay. In the other hand, if they are busy they charge more than what they quoted for the job they are currently doing. If the new customer accepts the bid, the handyman makes an excuse to the current customer and takes the new job that pays more. Then, he returns to the job he interrupted later when he can.
