I have looked at these tone mapping options for a little while now trying to figure out the what they mean in practical terms. Thanks for this insightful video!
Always love hearing from Chris! Thanks for this video gents. 👏 this cleared a bit up for me as I had it the wrong way around in my head, thinking that local would be better because it would only be affecting smaller parts of the image. Glad to have it clarified.
Technically local is better… But it’s more variable. And so it will change easier, however, be sure to test it out. With the later phones especially I’ve noticed that the “exposure shift” is not nearly as bad as it used to be. And in some cases it’s rocksolid. For me, if I’m shooting in a very high contrast scene especially if the camera is static I’ll probably use local. It’s noticeably better. Otherwise for most stuff global is probably the way to go. 👍🏻
Thanks for explaining this. The stock iPhone camera app has annoying and sometimes distracting flicker when filming a scene with a bright blue sky or snow.
@@iphoneographers thank you for confirmation! I'm not planning to upgrade my phone but it's still nice to know the future looks better 😁 . My next wish is for apple to put some internal ND filters in the cameras 🙂
I don’t have those to test out, but so far most lenses do seem to be working in initial testing I’ve seen. But not all, it’ll really be manufactured dependent. Will be doing extensive looks at that once I get cases and cages. Thanks for watching!
Great video as always Blake !!! Quick question. When you use Filmic Pro for outdoor recording, do you run into over heating issues? If so, any solutions that you use to mitigate? Thanks again for your content, it has been really helpful in my mobile filming journey!!!!
I have had some issues, yes. It’s much better now than it used to be, but still happens. The best thing to do is always cover the phone with a flag or umbrella so it’s not in direct sunlight. Or stay in the shade. Also, leave it off in between shots. Sometimes even doing that it will overheat, especially if it’s 90+ degrees outside and you roll for more than a few minutes strait (like shooting a timelapse). Quick shots I’ve had less or no trouble. When it does overheat turn it off for about 10 minutes and then you can shoot again. I actually made a video about this a few years ago… ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sxrJq2a4FHU.html. So it’s just something we have to unfortunately deal with. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!
Thanks Blake! I watched your overheating video and it at best made me feel better that cameras other than iPhones have this issue. I’ll have to keep this in mind when preparing to shoot video. Thanks again for your content!!! It’s great to see someone creating quality films with mobile phones. I will be there one day. Mastering family movies now, short films next!!!
blake whats good! thanks for your videos. just recently dived in to the phone videography. I got a question. ND filters for phone, which one would you recommend? Moment, Sandmarc or moondog?
I personally like Freewell or Moment, but I use Freewell the most. These are my favorite… ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VuJ1OrL78fk.html but their other non-magnetic ones are great, too. Hope that helps, thanks for watching!
Blake, I signed up and took your course on filmic pro. However I am completely stumped as to why I take a video in portrait mode when I replay it in the filmic pro app it's in full portrait mode on my iPad. However when I take a video in landscape mode and replay it in the filmic pro app it looks likes it's into 1 x1 format and only takes up about 1/2 of the screen on my iPad. now if I move it to my iOS photo library it suddenly plays in full screen mode. 80 years old and terrible confused. I have been using filmic pro for several years and never had this problem before.
Hi Bill, first off thanks for taking the course and I hope it was educational for you! Regarding that issue… that’s a weird one I haven’t encountered. My first thought is to say do a hard restart of your phone. The kind where you hold the buttons down for 5+ seconds and the phone completely turns off. Then restart it where you see the Apple logo again. The issue sounds like a bug to me, especially since it seems to only happen in Filmic. The other thing I wondered was if it’s possible you shot something with anamorphic accidentally on (desqueeze) or possibly an aspect ratio crop. But since it looks normal in the Photos library that’s probably not it. The last thing to do would be to actually reinstall FiLMiC Pro. Delete it from your phone and then re-download it from the App Store. However, if you do this make sure you SAVE any videos from the app first otherwise they will be deleted. Let me know if any of this helps or if you still haven’t figured it out. -BC
@@iphoneographers Blake thanks for the suggestions, however, no change. on my iPhone 11 Pro no issue, it's just with my old 9.7 inch iPad pro. I am really unhappy that even though I have submitted to emails describing the issue to the filmic help desk I have had no response from them.
Hello, please, is filmic pro a weekly subcription? On iphone 11 it shows a one time fee of about £12 and it showing about £4 per week on iphone 13. What's the problem please. I wish to use ot on Iphone 13 with a one time fee
Does it say that when you try to buy it on the App Store or is that once you have it and it’s an in-app purchase? Since I already have it I’m not seeing it. In the past it’s always been a one time fee and then you can buy in-app purchases like the CineKit or Film Looks etc.
Great video, I have a question, when I use filmic pro in horizontal (handheld) and I lock reticles (exposure and focus) If I move the iPhone and the screen rotates to vertical, both reticles automatically unlock so I have to manually check again all the setting to be sure that it is appropriate . Is this something that i'm doing wrong? It's a bug? Is as it has to be? Thanks!
@@Daniverse96 yes, the orientation is just an example, if you turn off the display or switch to another app you have the same issue, filmic does not maintain the reticles “in red”
I rarely shoot vertically, but I have noticed that before and I think it’s just a quirk. Or maybe a bug. You can lock the screen orientation within Filmic Pro if you’d like and that’s actually what I do especially for moving the phone around a lot.
@@iphoneographers Thanks for your response. Neither do I shoot vertically but you know sometimes you stop recording and move the iPhone (moreover if you shoot handheld), as you say the only way to avoid this is locking the device rotation, so who knows? could it be fine to know the explanation of this behavior from the developers. Good job my friend keep going on! Love your channel!
Got lgv40 and new filmic pro, got blocky noise on my footage specifically mid to dark area, 4k.24fps.10bit.logv3.filmicquality. It's like blinking patches. Anyone encounter same problem?
