Trimming an Australian Shepherd's coat on their back legs (aka feathers) can help greatly reduce shedding in hot months and is easily done with just scissors. No clippers needed!

Groomers go through training and school for a reason. Just pay the $70 to get your dog professionally groomed and deshedded.
@ThisOldeThing
@ThisOldeThing 6 лет назад
There seems to be some confusion as to the point of this video. This video is for those who aren't spending $70, and who don't need to buy special tools, to show them that they can minimize their aussie's shedding in just a few minutes. I have shown Aussies so I know the breed standard and the traditional grooming, but not everyone has time or money to do that. I think they look cute with short hair as well.

Except that it doesn't reduce shedding, it damages the coat and make shedding worse.

Why have such a gorgeous breed and spend so much on one as a puppy just to be cheap and not groom it? Let me guess, you feed Wal-Mart cheap dog food as well? There is nothing positive about this video. Smh.

Hello. Professional groomer here with 23 years in the profession. Your dog is adorable and so well behaved. I have watched your video and I think I know why other groomers seem to be reacting so negatively. By pulling the hair out and then cutting it l, there is a huge risk of cutting the dog, especially with so much compacted undercoat. A safer way to try this would be to thoroughly brush the area out, being sure not to brush burn the dog. Then use a comb to check your work and to remove any remaining undercoat. Once that is finished fluff the coat away from the dog and carefully scissor off to desired length without pulling the hair away from the dog. This can be a huge safety risk. Always watch where the end of your scissors are closing so that you don’t accidentally cut another part of the dog. 😊

Some people can be so mean... I'm a professional groomer and I think you did a decent job for a "home" groom. Only thing I would recommend is to buy a greyhound comb and a cheap pair of curved shears from Amazon. Brush her tooshie out with your slicker brush and use the greyhound comb to fluff/pull the hair straight out instead of using your fingers and cut. You'll get a cleaner look this way. Also I love the bond you and your dog have it's awesome to see and keep up the good work on taking such good care of your pup.❤️

This is the nicest comment I see in this video thank you for this tip. I don’t usually bring my 2 aussies to the groomers since they’ve complained about them being too hard to handle (it’s their anxiety) so I watch a lot of videos how to groom them properly. Thank you for the tip!

A late thanks for sharing this. It helps to see new ideas, and I like how you break it up into 3 passes. We use a cheap (but sharp) crafting scissors to trim our Aussie's "wings", and it helps reduce the mess, burs, and mud. She looks very similar to Luca, so the video was extra entertaining for us! Also learned even more tips from a few of the constructive video comments, so thanks!

Thank you for your video. You are a lifesaver. I had a grooming appointment for my Aussie this morning. He is very happy and very friendly dog, but he hates being groomed (he twists and turns and won't hold still) so none of the local groomers will take him unless I give him a tranquilizer before the appointment. 15 minutes after I gave him the tranquilizer, the groomer cancelled the appointment so I went on RU-vid found your video and groomed him myself since I have all the brushes and the scissors. He looks pretty good. I was so encouraged by this experience that I have decided to keep grooming him myself. Over time I'll improve. BTW the groomers around here (Silicon Valley) cost $110 for a full-grooming.

I actually think you did a great job. I’ll probably pick up a pair of shears to use as some commenters suggested but don’t listen to “the professional’s” hate. Part of being a professional is having a professional approach to something you see that you believe is done incorrectly. The attitudes that these “professional groomers” have in these comments is one of the many reasons I refuse to take my Aussie to a groomer. Too many horror stories that include rough treatment and not doing what the client asks for i.e. please a light trim then receiving a shaved dog. Besides it’s your doggo so I say you’re allowed to trim your pup however you want. Thanks for the video!

Trimming hair doesn't reduce shedding, it just makes for smaller pieces of hair to be shed. Why people think that shaving or trimming their dogs hair makes it suddenly not fall out of their body is beyond me.

I question on 1 thing, your Aussie looks so clean and soft. I bathe my Aussie almost every day, he is impossible to get clean and he'll still kind of stink after the bath.
@ThisOldeThing
@ThisOldeThing 4 года назад
Great question! Does it take a long time for him to dry? If so, you may want to blow dry him at least slightly after the bath. Make sure you're moving the hair dryer so you don't burn their skin. Because dogs' coats hold so much water, it's easy for what causes the "dog smell" to start growing before it dries. I try to bathe Luca about every 2 weeks. If you bathe him every day, it could bother his skin but also cause his fur to be less soft because it's stripped of the natural oils. Let me know if that helps!

I found this video because I have an Aussie and simply wanted to see how other people trim them. You video helped, so please keep it up! All you're doing is helping people with these videos and you're helping far more people than you know. It's only the few people that leave the negative comments that get attention though. Super lame, but at least they gave you some views and watch time! So really they are only helping you grow :) Keep making simple videos and putting them out there. Thanks for the trimming tips. Have you ever / do you use clippers ? I routinely do basically what you are doing in the video all over my shepherds entire body, leaving about 2 inches of fur. Yours looks shorter. I’ve heard it’s not a good idea to go shorter, but the fleas are soo bad here in CA by the beach, I need to do more i think. I’ve met a couple owners now that say they clip theirs, but I’ve not seen the long term effects, if any. Thanks again.

Its when the double coated breeds are shaved. Shaving ruins the coat, not scissoring it. Been a groomer now for 9 years. Definitely recommend brushing your dog completely before attempting to scissor it. You'll get a much nicer finish.

Hey! As a new aussie owner, who didn't spend a thousand dollars to get one but rescued her off of a facebook group for free, I really want to invest my time into her and not bring her to a groomer unless its absolutely mandatory. The last owners seemed to not take very good care of her and she was previously abused, so I want to train her more to be more relaxed around strangers before I bring her to a groomer where she potentially becomes violent. Her fur looks like it hasn't been groomed in a long time. What are the best materials to get to broom them?

The haters to this video are just groomers who are upset because anyone with an internet connection and a pair of scissors can do 90 percent of their job. In my opinion paying that much to have your dog groomed is a waste of money unless you are showing it. I’d rather save that money to spend on things that matter like vet bills and high quality food.
@ihateallyall

as a groomer... what the FUCK kinda technique is that?! you don’t use regular scissors, that’s just a no. you don’t PULL the hair away from the skin and just C H O M P. I’m DONE! people be doing this shit at home and thinking it really looks good. also it’s not the top coat and fluff that’s causing shedding. you trimming that hair like that will cut into the undercoat and just make the shedding hair smaller. that dog needs a good wash with shampoo, preferably for deshedding, dryer if you have one, and extensive brushing and combing no longer than 15-20 minutes at a time. she’s shedding because you’re not brushing.

I was horrified when she picked him up and hung him upside down. She said it didn't hurt him and he'd calm in a minute. Well yes he went limp and she clipped his nails and complained about his behavior and his coat . I do brush and he is just a year old. The vet techs usually do his nails . I'm never going there again . She said he needed boot camp training and is gonna hurt someone . Very bad experience for mom and boy. Never going there again

sweetheart - not one groomer I have worked with does a shit job like this. I have invested over $500 in amazing tools in less than a year for my career. I payed into my schooling, and continue to do so and study. I have scissor trimmed many dogs by hand. you need to bathe and dry first to get a good finish. before trimming anything, you need to brush with a slicker than comb out the fur and dematt any fur that needs it. you need dog grooming scissors to get a nice finish, curves and thinners. you comb the fur up and trim, you don’t bounce the scissors and NEVER EVER SHOULD PULL THE HAIR FROM THE SKIN TO TRIM. THAT IS HOW YOU CUT A DOG. then after making your cuts and outline the booty, you comb again and take your chunkers or thinners and even out any ragged edges. a booty that comes out FLAWLESS, and looks so much better than this because I went to school for it, takes me 15 minutes. 30 more for trimming the chest, underbelly, feet, pads, and around ears if requested, on top of 10 minutes for dematting, brushing, deshedding, and combing out the fur for prep. so FUCK you too for thinking her 3 minute choppy ass job is what us groomers we send out. a full Aussie bath, dry, and scissor trim alone with nails and ear cleaning takes me a minimum of an hour, because I produce great work. if you’re not a groomer, do not compare this work to what we do or say it’s so easy, because it isn’t. do you trust yourself to change your car battery even though you know nothing about mechanics? just look up a video and change it, and do it on a more professional level than an actual mechanic? no, you don’t. it’s the same for us.
