I'm pretty sure they aren't how you expect. The mic is just top notch in noise cancellation because you can only hear little leaks of cheers and laughs throughout the talk.
This was beautiful to watch. Why am I so insecure when searching for jobs when I could just change my mindset and deal with it the way I deal with my UX projects? Thanks for sharing this presentation!
Very interesting talk but the recruiting process is sadly not the same everywhere. When Mr. Doherty says he replied back to the email saying he was not accepted, I think he actually was lucky since in many companies it's either an automatic answer(you know those do-not-reply emails) or either no answer AT ALL in which we cannot try to "negociate" like he did.
35:34 Wow, I am glad there s someone crazier than me, Once I got a no for an answer from a secretary (I wanted to meet the president of a foundation to show him my drawings) , she told me he didn't have time or some random excuse, I called again under another number, this time I told her that his sister (I knew her name but I didn't know her personally) has given me his contact, He was confused and gave me an appointment, he ended up by buying few drawings and putting me in contact with other collectors jajaja
This crowd has to be the most boring crowd I have ever seen. They reply only to the questions asked and does not acknowledge and rare giggles. Great content btw!

Once had the rare chance to meet a Google employee at a gathering for a friend. She went to Penn (Ivy) and someone said aloud hey you should see if Eric (me) is applicable for hire to Google, he does graphics/coding/dev. She looked over at me like I was crazy, for she got her job (instant hire) in Google with her Penn credentials, not interviews or culling through the HR process, and that was all she knew how she was hired. Just from her attitude I thought less of Google as I ever had.
Same thing happened to me years prior. A friend of a friend was a googler and I asked him about how to get in and he laughed at me and said “oh you can’t work for google. You didn’t go to the right university.” Challenge accepted. I made sure that when I got in, I sent him an email from inside saying “I did it!” I was also 3 levels his senior on my first day at google
Google UX has seen a lot of problems over the years (excessive changes in layout and task flow making user support unnecessarily difficult, changes to tasks to make them require 3 clicks instead of 1, buggy behavior, etc.). I wonder if they aren't changing UX designers TOO often, your 2-4 year number notwithstanding.

Kind of different experiences for me, maybe because I'm not going through sourcers. All they do is to ask whether you "can do this or not", and look through your experience. Company/Client reference is the only thing negotiable in the interview.
I think there is an element of luck to land these kind of jobs these days. I know some unbelievably talented people who have done masters degrees, professional diplomas, freelancing, networking.. the whole lot. Not to mention having a killer portfolio and still cant get a job for years if at all. If you start early (like when computers began), you are sorted. But in this day and age, in this market it seems bloody impossible.
There definitely is an element of luck, especially at these highly coveted companies, but for a talented designer with a good portfolio to not find a job for years..there has to be something glaringly wrong. Maybe they've overpriced themselves or their interview skills are bad or they are in the middle of nowhere..there must something. I've been a UX designer for 15 years, I change jobs every 1-3 years, and every time I end up choosing between 2 or 3 offers. I'm good, but I'm no world class talent. I just make a good impression and I back it up with solid work. In this TED talk he does point out a lot of little things that help you stand out from the masses, send this to your friends who cant find jobs.
Hey Sandip, think of it like solving a puzzle. There must be areas of the puzzle where you may be perceived to be missing some pieces. If you can figure out where they are, you can address them. In the final year of my college now and making the switch to UX from the regular dev stuff. This was great and VERY insightful. Learnt a lot from this one!

Hey there, probably not the person that you're looking forward to hearing a response from, but if it's worth anything -- I'd say go for it. If that's what your passion and interest is, then take courses online and work on your craft. Companies love talent, they'll overlook experience if you can do the job and consistently show your steps in doing so. Best, Prab

I don't agree with some points you mentioned (such as check someone's LinkedIn profile anonymous - if you're having an interview with them), but overall it was a great talk! Witty and straight to the point.
I've listened to the first 14 minutes and got an impression that a presentor wants everyone to abandon their job and apply to work for Google for low wage 😅. Alright I will keep watching to see if my perspective will change...
Saying 'what do you have to show for it, other than 4 years of stress and your hair fell out', is offensive to people who may just naturally have hairloss due to age or genetics.
@@AndrewDoherty It's ok, but I feel people always assume that men don't get offended about physical stuff whereas women do. Maybe I am the odd one out but I have issues with self image so there we go, my problem.
Hair loss from stress is a legitimate possibility, though. I lost about a third of my hair last year after a very stressful period of my life. The condition is called telogen effluvium. You definitely want to avoid that kind of stress if you can!
