This video is like none other dude. You really told it good. Other videos have just told me to write yourself but not just let it loose. The best piece of advice was the how anything in HS will not just better me in the future of college, but also life. UPenn is my dream man thanks a lot.

This is really encouraging. It's important to remember that colleges are looking for potential in passion, not necessarily in achievement. They're looking for a real human, not a school robot.

I appreciate how you stressed the essay/communication/personality aspect of application. I never expected to get into one of the “top 5” schools in the country because of my stats (which seemed way out of range), but I truly feel that this criteria helped me. I would add that leading/creating rather than just participating is another distinguishing factor that many overlook.

So randomly stumbled upon this video, haven't watched college related videos in a while now. I'm applying to colleges this fall and suddenly as 2022 started, it got to me. This video was really great! Really love the part about the college essay. I've heard so many people say so many different things about writing it and I had to sit back and do what you said when writing my essay, probably the most I've ever been vulnerable about myself with anything. Along with that was just writing about what I care about and doing things that were fun for me!! Great advice and a little update, I got an interview with Penn!!

Hey Matthew, I think your advice is absolutely phenomenal. I am currently a freshman aiming for some top schools and have heard over and over that you need to do “what you love.” The only problem is that I have had a lot of trouble figuring out what I actually like to do. I am apart of many extracurriculars, all of which I like, but as you said you need to be different. Maybe you would have some advice?

Loved The vid it honestly was very helpful. But if everyone is becoming president of everything then how do I stand out. So far I moved up a grade, became captain of my football team and participate in several muns plus i got Duke of Edinburgh silver. But this is no way enough right. do what you love. do what others won’t. honestly, work on something that ur really into. and if you don’t have something you find interesting yet, go exploring! don’t try to build ur resume. if you keep diving deeper into what you enjoy, it’ll build itself. you still got lots of time so now… make friends w ur teachers, ur classmates, ur lunch ladies, and be urself :)

you basically said SATs, ACTs, & APs are standards if you want to be considered... what about if someone worked as hard as they could during the pandemic, has a 4.5 weighted and 4.0 unweighted GPA and had multiple interesting extracurriculars, passion projects, and leadership opportunities but NO test scores? How would they get in? It's really disturbing to think about; do you think schools really DO care about a lack of test scores even though they state "test optional" during covid?
