I appreciate this video. I’m 21 years old, unemployed and have no direction of what I wanna do with my life and so I thought I can make something with myself by getting into the trades like like plumbing. Only problem was I don’t see a lot of our people in those areas, except Trucking, again I appreciate the message. 🙏🏼

Thanks for the video! I’m thinking about changing careers (currently working in hospitality) and want do a similar pipe fitter apprenticeship. I’m in my late 30’s and live in Honolulu where the union apprenticeship openings are very competitive. In your experience, are there people my age just starting down this career path?

A lot of square roots and fractions by hand. No calculators allowed. A lot of equations to remember. If you got B's in Math in HS you'll be ok. They'll ease you in.

I believe every local is different, depending on demand, location, and the strength of the local, which determines how difficult it would be for new applicants to get in. Bigger cities seem to be high in demand, therefore it’s harder to get into the UA locals in those cities. Don’t get me wrong, theres a process no matter what UA local you apply for, but bigger cities seem to have a longer waiting list. As for credits being applied to an apprenticeship, having specific certs can allow you to skip some years in the apprenticeship program, or if you’ve been doing Pipefitting for some time non union, you can skip the entire apprenticeship all together, but that is up to the local.

Quick question, let’s say I join an open shop and apply at my local union. How would I go about letting the open shop know I’m leaving once the union calls without looking like a piece of shit to the open shop? Like hey thanks for hiring me and taking a chance on someone with no experience but I’m out. Just curious if you have any insight

Honestly I'm not longer in the program. When I got laid off I pursued something else. You will have 2 days of per week while doing your apprenticeship.

im a young teen aspiring to be a master plumber in the future, i love working with my hands and getting the satisfaction of walking back and looking at a project i’ve completed and feel proud about it. Im a little troubled on where i should start my future once i graduate highschool. Should i go to union right off the bat and get the education and training i need then merge off to non union. Or vice versa. thoughts opinions, anything would help, thanks! (also i just turned 16 so i have a few more years to think about

Depends if your non union or union. Union you shouldn’t be paying for any tools during your apprenticeship. Pipefitters normally don’t have tool belts more like tool bags. Brands it depends some like Milwaukee others like dewalt.

So I just joined the pipefitter/plumbers union where I live in so.cal they actually gave me a tool list that I had to have for work nothing more or nothing less I had to have exactly what was on the list . So fitters use tool bags than so I know what to purchase

See im 19 and i wanna get into a hvac and or labor union 1 problem is i dont have my drivers license and or a vehicle yet so im workin on that but the prob is also that idk what im interested in and what id think im good at it doesnt help that i dont know anyone thats in Hvac and labor unions that i can talk to. and theirs only so many questions i could ask cuz some of em its hard to answer im sure.

I believe you start at 20.57 per HR. Which is have the journeyman's rate. I've heard of guys in Chicago making 50 per hr

Hello everyone I been working as a Plomer in NYC for around 7 years I’ve got a lot of experience I’ve been doing all kind of plumbing, my questions is if I apply for a union all the years of experience I have will help me to avoid apprentice training and if someone knows if I have to do a test to get into and if I need a high school, as everyone Im just looking for better opportunities I don’t have direction on how to start or where to go can someone help me out and guide me please I will appreciate it, I live in NYC, thanks 🙏🏽

@@Shawn_p_tv When there is a job posted that you want you call the dispatched and tell him that you would like to put your name onto that job. If you are the successful member to get the job the dispatcher will inform you that you were successful. Instead of only looking at the board for a job you can call the Union Sprinkler Contractors directly for a job. All of the contractors are listed on the Local 170 web page to look at. I would try Viking Sprinklers and ask for Ryan Hernstedt or PML Professional Mechanical and ask for Chad Henderson.

First the plumbers union only hire the best, that why they get paid the best. Simple right?? Next journeyman or master license, pass test, prove your skills in Industrial and Commerical. Fail your out. Pass your set, easily over six figures a year. Retired at 57 years of age.

I don't think your correct buddy my union doesn't do shit for me as a HVAC apprentice I went to college and have a bachelors degree that I believe is wrong information. If anything it would take me longer I had to take a leave of absence I was out of work since AUGUST! My union is killing my these guys are something else.

I do service plumbing and some HVAC work in UA local 100. Service is the way to go if you are in the union. I get 3 weeks paid vacation, paid holidays, company truck I take home, company phone and tablet plus I get $4 over joirneyman scale. We also font have a boss with us so we are just out there doing our own thing. Take a break when you want, smoke a cigarette when you want. Service is the tits man.

Serive is takes more knowledge and experience. I did new construction for years and I can assure you that we make alot more on service plus much better benefits. I've done pipe fitting and welding as well and that shot sucks when you've had the freedom you get with service.

@@averagebloke4474 dont wait for the hall to find you work. Talk to the guys you know in the field and get your resume together. I won't hire anyone from the bench. You have to get a referral from someone we know or take the initiative and reach out to us yourself. I never went o the bench once because I was always on the grind and tried my best to find other work if I saw shit was slowing down. Atleast that's how it is here in Dallas at local 100. You have to show initiative, no one is just going to hand it to you.
