In this video I talk about my experience getting my first internship at a fortune 100 company.
#DataScience #DataScienceJobs #DataScienceInternship
Highlights:
- Plan your resume carefully, put your tech skills up top and highlight your project experience. Try to do multiple projects, one for regression, one for classification, one for clustering, and one using either deep learning or gradient boosted random forest. Also, customize your resume and message for each interview.
- Practice telling your story. Know why you want to work as a data scientist and why you want to work at a specific company. do your homework on company news and history. This can get you to the next round.
- Don't freak out over a coding interview or a problem analysis set. Companies don't expect too much from interns. They just want to know that you have baseline abilities. If you want to impress them, use an ensemble model or use some feature engineering.
- In person, speak about the outcomes of your projects. Make sure you communicate why you worked on them and the potential value they could create for a business.

Thanks for sharing these awesome tips! I was wondering what kind of working positions would be helpful to have when applying to a data science internship. I'm hoping to go to a university that has a co-op program that begins first year but I'm most likely not going to get a data science position that early. Do you have any recommendations for what kind of positions I should look for that would be helpful for ending up in data science?

A helpful video for me. It will help me to bring positive and necessary changes in my journey of learning data science. My learning- Explaining the WHY is really important which shows the purpose of doing something. Company-specific preparation is important while sending a resume and cover letter. Ken, correct me if I am wrong but do you think you worked as a consultant in the past which is helping you to be a good communicator or explainer?
@KenJee_ds

I think the consulting really did help me in that aspect. I don't think everyone needs to go down that route, but it can be helpful for people to think about what skills from their past can add value to their work in data science!

Hey Ken! I have a question. For internship applications, how complex do the portfolio projects on my resume need to be? For example, there are some datasets (like Kaggle's Titanic) in which I could create a pretty accurate regression model in just a few lines of code, but that obviously doesn't seem like enough to include in a portfolio. Further, if I'm taking an online machine learning course, and there are 'projects' given but solutions to those projects given as well, I'm assuming that those projects wouldn't be wise to include in a portfolio?
@KenJee_ds
@KenJee_ds 3 года назад
The bar for internships is definitely lower, but I would try to have at least 1-2 full projects in there that you did on your own or for a class. It is totally fine to have that other stuff in there as well, but I would try to organize it so your ds projects are pinned to the top. I hope this helps!

This was so helpful. My background is in biology and cognitive science/psychology and throughout undergrad I've been using Python and R to run a variety of different analyses for hypotheses, research questions and data insights. Most of these don't have a ML component, I'm learning that now. could these projects still be relevant for landing a data science internship?
@KenJee_ds
@KenJee_ds 4 года назад
They absolutely could! I always recommend that people combine their pre-existing skills with data science. That makes it appear to be a more natural transition to the field rather than a jump. People who are hiring data scientists generally like logical steps haha. I hope this helps!

I have a hard dilemma, where I graduated while having a data analyst internship but wished I did a data scientist internship on top of it during college. I am guessing that my best route should be to land a data analyst role and then work my way up to a data scientist position as I gain more domain and real world experience working with data/working on more projects added on my portfolio?

@KenJee_ds
@KenJee_ds 4 года назад
Great question! It really depends on the company and the geographic region in which you are working. I would try to find the salary of a data scientist at the company you are applying to. This should be easier than internship salary. You can look on glassdoor.com for this. If you are a grad student I would take ~80% of that and convert it to an hourly rate. If you are a undergrad I would take ~65% of that and convert it to an hourly rate. I hope that this helps!

Hey Ken!! Thanks for this great video. I am in a dilemma. I am doing my undergrads (2nd year) on Computer Science and I am really interested in data Science. I have started my journey towards it and almost there to do my own projects (Started doing projects on Kaggle). I have work placement on 3rd year. By then I hope to have some projects done on my own. But I doubt companies hire an undergrad for data science role. I have heard that they prefer master's student. What's your say in this? I don't want to change my career path now.
@KenJee_ds
@KenJee_ds 3 года назад
Thanks for watching the video! I think you are on one of the many correct paths to becoming a data scientist. While you could go down the masters route, I think you would get to the same destination (data scientist), by going down the software engineering or data analyst routes. If you do that you 1. don't pay for grad school (you actually get paid!) and 2. get there in about the same amount of time (2 years). I think there are plenty of software engineering roles where you get to use data science tools (same with data analyst roles), and you would be doing similar work, it would just be with a different title. I hope this helps!

I truly feel ashamed while typing this text but what do you literally mean saying project? I mean for instance I think an original idea and then collect relatively data from sources then create a model for prediction. Or I just choose a Kaggle Project and try to accomplish the aim as good as I can. Which one does count for a resume? THANKS FOR SHARING YOUR EXPERIENCE AND THOUGHTS BTW ❤️ greetings from Turkey
@KenJee_ds
@KenJee_ds 4 года назад
Don't feel ashamed, this is a totally fine question! I think in the early stages, a project could be as simple as doing your best with a kaggle data set. As you do more of these and get familiar with the different techniques, you should experiment with new data and try to find unique insights. For an internship, I think either type (simple kaggle or more advanced project where you collect your own data) would be acceptable for a resume or a portfolio. For a true data science job (post graduation) you would want to have 4-5 of the second type. I hope this helps!
