How I Got Out of the "LEGO Investor" Mindset

I literally had a mech script and stopped looking at it.
I used to care a lot about my figures and their investments- but the more I begin to appreciate LEGO star wars, the less unhappy I am? It's hard to enjoy something that you're really financially invested in, and the market will only stress you out. It's in everyone's best interest for LEGO to make CHEAPER PREMIUM FIGS :)
I recently told someone how excited I was about the heir to the empire title, to which in return they responded, "no serious EU fan is watching it". Must be miserable living like that.

If you end up buying the venator just because you want a Rex… well you’ve played yourself… Grown adults getting off on their ability to gate keep other fans of the hobby just because they have more money than them is just plain dumb.

This! The investbros are ruining collecting in general. I have and had figures that I always wanted, but ever since 2020ish when the investbros got involved, all of these figures skyrocketed in value. Yes, I did buy a Rebels Ahsoka, but no because I saw it as an investement, but because I genuinly WANTED the figure for YEARS. The reveal of the mechs did sting a little because I did end up buying a UCS Boba torso to upgrade my exixting fig, but if I just waited a little longer I could have gotten one for a fraction of the price. Like I said, investbros are ruining it for the rest of us, but thankfully companies like GCC are here to save us with cheap, affordable alternatives!

since i've come back to lego around 2019, i've noticed soooooo many people just talking about investing in sets and minifigs and it's just strange. i understand the mentality, but to cry about how the price plummeting on a minifigure that was due for an update anyways is just crazy. i know so many people that just think investing in lego minifigs is the end all be all of collecting lego, but from my perspective, there is no enjoyment to be had with collecting like that. it's a very greedy way of thinking, and while it's fine to want to make a little money on the side since it is getting harder and harder to afford the things we like, it's a whole other thing to only enjoy the money you can suck out of others by scalping a lego set that you've had in your basement for 10 years. it's just so ridiculous to look at lego in only a financial context, and not from how much enjoyment you get from it. i look at these mech sets as a win, because not only do they have really great looking minifigures, they also have some pretty great detail pieces. but the first thing i thought of when i saw the Boba Fett is "oh i can already hear the investors crying now."

Lego is, and always, will be a hobby first and foremost. It's a toy/display product sold for the purpose of entertainment, relaxation, and fun. There are certainly exceptions and risks that do pay off (for now), but no one should put their focus and trust in Lego as an investment tool. It is unfortunate how many Lego collectors see Lego in this way, including some Lego RU-vidrs.

Then s7 came out and it sky rocketed because investors got on it . they are destroying people passions by investing on battlepacks , emptying the shelves and sometimes encouraging stealing to get money (where i live boosters and some lego sets are under gaming consoles security locks and to have a booster you need a qr code to give at someone in the shop) . Agreed. Even though I have money to spend on Lego sets, I still use the same purchase strategy for when new Lego sets come out as I do when new stuff comes to the Fortnite item shop which is I only buy what I like, watch reviews on stuff I'm uncertain about to help me decide if I want it or not and pass on everything else. For example in the past 2 summer Lego release waves (summer 2022 and 2023) I've only gotten 3 sets.

"Investors" are honestly a bit of a plague on any hobby... I'm a life-long LEGO fan and was an MTG fan for a good while there (until WotC literally priced me out, lol) and just seeing people rabidly buy up TOYS so they can sit on it as "investments" breaks my heart. Amazing LEGO themes have become incredibly hard to get hold of in recent years (Adventurers and Rock Raiders doubling or tripling in price in months), and honestly... If I can get a good "fake" Chief, I'll just be happy. Happy to be able to get something I missed out on as a kid, and that "investors" priced me out of as an adult... And yeah, if there are any customs of fave SW characters that have become "investments", I'll be happy with those too! Also that Boba Fett is so rad, omg.

Yeah, I collect things because I like them and think they're cool. I didn’t get the 2002 Jango Fett minifigure *because* he's worth hundreds of dollars, I got him because he's a cool and unique minifigure that I always wanted since I first played the original Lego Star Wars video games. The fact he's worth money is just a bonus. I also got the entire Slave 1 set along with the carrying case for less than the figure by itself it going for these days. I admit I like knowing I got some rare figures or sets that are worth money, but I'm not gonna sell them so their monetary value doesn’t mean much to me besides "hey that's kinda neat I got something valuable". There are super valuable figures and sets that I don’t care enough to go out of my way to buy for the outrageous prices they go for. If I ever find a deal on them at a yard sale or marketplace post then I'll get them sure, but I'm never going to willingly drop thousands of dollars on some figures on Bricklink or Ebay.

As someone who likes to sell parts of my current collection to fund new purchases, it does slightly urk me that my Boba will go down especially due to the insane price increases on some of the Star Wars figs lately that are being inflated due to this weird hypebeast era that Lego Star Wars has entered. I understand the argument for the custom pad printed route, but many like myself tend to stick to the official stuff only. I don’t really think everyone that is upset about this should be regarded as only caring about the value of their collection, but probably care about the exclusivity associated with the fig. But after all they are two different figures and I’m ultimately glad people can get their hands on an arm printed boba fett without selling a kidney lol.

It’s people like that, causing Lego to both increase in price, and release exclusive minifigs in expensive sets, because Lego can hike up the price of a set, just so people will pay excess on something that takes the same amount of money to produce as a standard Clone Trooper minifig. I think Lego releasing these sets is giving modern kids access to figures that I had to wait for something like Christmas to get, for cheap, which is just great. And yeah, if I want to exploit those cheap prices to pick up toys built for children, in my mid 20s without heavily affecting my paycheck, well that’s a win too.

Finally someone said it. I hate RU-vidrs who are only in on the money and make videos about "SeTs YoU NEeD tO InVEsT iN". Lego is a fucking toy, and those people are exactly the reason why some sets like the Clone Figure pack are sold out constantly because they're buying them in bulk to sell them off at a higher price later on. sad little creatures, really

Hot take, but LEGO investors actually ruin LEGO. They buy new sets, LEGO sells out, and hard working Joe who wanted to buy the set to build together with his son is either forced to wait until LEGO MAYBE gets back in stock, if he isn’t too slow to purchase then, or resort to buying it from someone who is going to upcharge. It’s so ironic how these are treated. Cars that drive off the lot go down in value. Never mind being test driven, just the fact that it’s been purchased and leaves the perimeter, it goes down in value. An unopened box of plastic? Oooh, now that’s better after leaving the store. If anything, it should be less valuable since some clown breathed on it, making it more of a heath risk than getting it from a store where an entire company is liable, not just one person who can fake an identity with ease and avoid consequence. Of course, its thanks to supply and demand that LEGO sells for as much as it does in the aftermarket. As long as people keep seeing how much some sets or parts have sold for, they want to try their luck at catching a desperate buyer.

Marvel fan here. I’ve loved LEGO for longer than I can remember. As a teen, I spent time reading Marvel comics and buying the sets and figures I liked for my enjoyment. I didn’t do it to resell on some grossly, falsely over-inflated market. It’s still a toy at the end of the day, I don’t see a reason to justify spending thousands on older figures when the brand new $16 sets come with better, overall more accurate ones.

Earlier this summer when rumors of a new jabba’s palace started circulating I saw a ton of comments of people complaining that their 2013 jabba was going to decrease in value. Absolutely pathetic.

To be fair, every once in a while, there’s a one off set of something that you just know it’s gonna be worth something in the future, like the Tallneck, I bought it for 80$ and got it shipped from Amazon, two weeks later it was worth $200 and people were selling their Aloy figures for the base price of the set, unless they ever release a horizon set again (which is pretty unlikely) the worth of that figure and that set in general will never go down, but you can’t be buying Star Wars sets and expect to get anything out of it in the long run, unless you had sets from the early 2000’s

I never understood the monetary focus of collecting or the idea of wanting certain figures to not be updated or remade because it preserves that perceived "value" of the "rare" one you have. I honestly wish every LEGO fan had the opportunity to own the figures that they desire most. It's the love of the artful nature of LEGO. These mechs are great for the child who wants a Darth Vader (who rarely appears in cheap sets these days), and the adult who gets a very detailed Boba Fett. Like, these are just plastic toys at the end of the day. They degrade, they break, and they get remade so that other people get a chance to own something they missed out on in the past, to better fill out their collection. Plus, if you REALLY care about the uniqueness of your figures, remakes of figures are almost never the same as the old.

Ive always found investors who only do such for its own sake to be nothing but leeches on whatever hobby theyre in. Lego, tcgs, tf2 hats, any collectible, if you arent actively enjoying what you buy for its own sake, but instead for its monetary value, i actually hate you. You make cool things prohbitively hard to get. I actively laugh in glee when something gets printed that reduces the value for investors, especially if its something in favor of casual fans, because it always makes things healthier overall.

considering I got the new cloud city boba fett for 100$, I still think that the fig would be worth that much regardless of this new variant. I only care about the value as long as the figs I buy for a certain amount don't suddenly just drop in value to way less than what I bought them for, and I got that boba no less than a few weeks ago so i'd prefer it doesn't just suddenly drop. I doubt that will happen since the simple fact is that this new fig isn't a carbon copy and the new CC boba's rarity won't change, thus meaning its price isn't gonna drop.

Had to leave one more comment, forgot to say this but is funny you come out with this cus just last week I was sitting down holding my P2 Rex and I was like when they come out with the new one your value will go down, I was sad but then I was like hay I own this minifigure because I think he is cool and not cus of his value, that was a big reality check for me.

Most of this behavior is like a drug addiction, jumbled with greed and pride. No matter if its Lego or some other collecting hobby.

The whole fun in lego investing is that even if the set value tanks, you're still left with a pretty cool Lego set. I think a lot of collectors forget that and only buy sets that they think are good investments, not stuff they actually want.
