I have grasshoppers everywhere! They are eating my plants, trees and hopping everywhere. I've been given lots of advice about how to get rid of them and this is my experience with a couple of organic remedies. Some didn't work for me and one did. I hope it might work for you too.

Maybe you didn't wait long enough for the flour to work. I did the flour treatment a week or so ago and noticed less activity after several days. Yesterday, I picked beans and noticed grasshopper skeletons and some very lethargic live ones that didn't jump when provoked.

I have a grasshopper problem too. I heard flour with a bit of baking soda works well. I'll try that and I bought some Neem oil. They are devouring my almond tree leaves too. Also, good to know they have a three-year cycle and they lay their eggs in the top 2 inches of soil, so disrupting the soil helps, so they don't come back in the spring. I'll try some DE too. Thanks!

I use take down and neem. When they are larger grasshoppers I try to catch them and feed them to our box turtles. The take down works with neem mixed in a pump sprayer from harbor freight. Just mix the solution before spraying your plants and test the spray on a small section of the plants. Only do this at sundown so you don’t burn your plants!

I dusted one with DE the other day and he was so stunned/bothered by it I was able to stomp him. But now I see evidence of more and it breaks my heart because the DE is harmful to other beneficial insects that I have been trying to encourage. I can't have these guys taking over though. 💔💔💔💔

I have thousands of grasshoppers in my yard right now. I made a potent spray that I used once and may make a different stronger brew. Garlic smashed up. a rotten onion smashed up. hot chili powder, and some oil in a half gallon of water. This time I will make the spray stronger with more chili. I tried to find some NOLO bait but the company is no longer able to make the bait due to the factory having had a fire. So it is home-made spray as I am an organic gardener. By the way, it is not just my home that has the problem - the hoppers are all over the neighborhood for at least 1/2 mile away as I saw a bunch at a local parking lot of a restaurant.

I live in southern Louisiana and we have giant black grasshoppers that just give me the willies when I see them, not to mention how much racket they make all night long during the summer!! I found one close to my lemon tree that I just finished getting rid of a bunch of caterpillars from almost completely devouring every leaf, but the grasshopper leaped into my Schefflera plant and now I don’t know what to do to get rid of him😒 I’m open to any and all suggestions anyone might have! I prefer the natural substance route if possible, but I’m opposed to stepping on them lol 😂

@suzi_in_zone6B
@suzi_in_zone6B Месяц назад
It can, but you’re only supposed to apply a light dusting, and leave the flour on a couple days at a time. As with most insects, their metabolism increases as temps rise, making them even more ravenous. A light dusting of flour on two consecutive hot days, isn’t going to stunt your plant anymore than these jerks devouring all their leaves. 🥹

@christineribone9351
@christineribone9351 Год назад
@@MollieC-uc1fk Thanks! The flour didn't work? It's supposed to gum up their mouths, then they can't eat and starve to death. It's not a quick killing process, it takes time. Maybe you didn't put enough flour on leaves. The GH's love my holly hock plants. The leaves are as big as dinner plates. They eat all the leaves, but devour the smaller leaves like it's candy. This year I sprayed the leaves with a mixture of baking soda, water, and a few drops of Neem. Sprayed top & bottom of leaves. After it dried, I whisked flour with a cheap paintbrush. Top & bottom of leaves. The flour has stuck for a couple of weeks now because of the preliminary step. I haven't seen any grasshopper damage yet. But I've only seen 2 junior size grasshoppers so far. Also im trashing old leaves as soon as they yellow or drop. I'm diligent about it, so that any eggs laid on them would be eliminated. I read that GH's mostly lay their eggs in the soil for the following year. Turning the soil in the cool early spring damages the eggs. I'll try it next spring. Hope my tips help out! Good luck!
