This is the story of how I got FOOD POISONING IN INDIA!
While visiting Kolkata, India in October 2017, we made a vlog about our evening near the Hooghly River. We try some Indian street food (which gave me food poisoning) and had a beautiful boat ride on the peaceful river.
India - its food and people, are amazing. Don't get us wrong. But you do need to be cautious eating abroad! Leave us a comment below if you've had a similar experience in India, or any country!
========================================================
This is the second channel for Chopstick Travel and Luke Martin! We will be showcasing uncut and RAW footage of Street Food around the world and Travel snippets from our world adventures! We love to eat and travel and believe its the best way to discover a culture! We want you to travel for food too!

@Edge Abdullah according to the latest stats more than 90% of the Indian population has access to basic sanitation after the govt built 110 million toilets back in 2014 for more than 550 million villagers and slum dwellers in India who previously didn't have access to a toilet lol. Also every single middle class and rich person in India has toilets in their homes and apartments lol sometimes multiple. My apartment in Mumbai has 3 toilets with attached bidget sprays and bum guns in each one of them which is more hygienic compared to using tissue lol. Way to generalize an entire country of 1.3 billion ppl lol

Rule of thumb to anyone that is going to India, never eat a salad or anything uncooked in India. You are gonna pay for it dearly. No raw onions, tomatoes, cucumbers as you are allowing that bacteria to enter your body. This does not only apply to street vendors, as it is all about handling, and who knows what's going on in the kitchen behind closed doors in bigger hotels. Safe Travels :).

I think there are precautions you can definitely take but still you have to accept it’s always a chance when traveling because we are sensitive to bugs and bacterias that don’t affect locals. It happened to me in Rome eating from a nice enough restaurant. I’ve also been to El Salvador a couple times. The first time I got deadly ill so the second time I took my own food and was fine until the very last day when I went to a big dinner with many people. Sure enough I spent more time in the airplane bathroom than in my passenger seat on the flight home. I just mention this so people accept that it can happen when traveling and just be sick, recover, and then continue your adventure!

I would recommend you to eat in stalls where they use plastic gloves 🧤 when they make street food, which may not be too many stalls but in *Park Street* area as well as *New Market* most shops started maintaining hygienic street food , and always go where it’s busy. But for Best hygiene I would recommend to try in *Haldiram Food City* they have couple of branches in Kolkata from Exide ie Chowringhee to Ballygunge . Hands down the cleanest and best place to try hygienic street food 🥘 in Kolkata. If possible try finding local food bloggers as well as check the *Zomato* ratings for the restaurants you want visit in India.

Problems I see: 1. Someone is sitting on the table bare foot. @1:30 2. Raw onions most likely at the temperature danger zone, that should be set under chilled container @2:23 3. Cross contamination.... Dirty hands picking up clean chips. @2:56 Chefs when they prep food they prep it in advance and pick up the ingredients using spoons or tongs, they use a cutting board and the food does not touch the chefs hands only his knife. You watch how he cuts the food with the knife in 1 hand and the food in the other chopping the food over the bowl, terrible food safety practice. This style of copping food over the bowl is only wise to do when you plan on cooking the food like a soup. I could have told you that food was suspect.

As a food safety inspection officer all I can add to this comment and don’t mean to insult the Indian culture or the Indian people but I’ve been to several Indian food restaurants in California due to reports of food poisoning , customers finding hairs in their food orders , food having foul smells. When me and my partner went to do a surprise inspection on each of the establishments you wouldn’t believe how disgusting those kitchens were, rotten food inside fridges, the floors were dirty , the pots were being used over and over again without washing, vegetables weren’t being properly washed either, the oil where they cooked was being reused it was already black, they were no gloves in any of those restaurants to handle food orders… they were dirtier than the Chinese kitchens we have been to due to sickness reports so in conclusión when it comes to Indian cuisine, is not the food , it’s the people who prepare it that they were never tough hygiene and food safety when it came to cooking. Interviewing some of them said they were street food vendors in India . I love Indian food but I prepare it myself, I don’t trust their food safety standards at all . They all have strong inmune systems because they are used to all of that so they don’t get sick . I don’t want to think how things are at their home , when it comes to food. And again I’ve met a lot of Indian people and they are really warm loving and caring and their homes are clean and their food is great . So I’m not speaking in general , all of my respect to them but when it comes to food safety I’d rather not eat at any restaurant.

We r Indians and we love love these food...I didnt find that his hands and nails are dirty or shirt is soiled....yes when u r a person who always eat less spiced food and boiled or filtered water and only boiled sor healthy snacks, u should never try these food...as per we are concerned we dont get sick with these snacks...they are yummy..sometimes we have to get adjusted with some less hygeinenic food to relish these yummy food... and who knows he might got sick from some other food he ate...which we may not know...I love Calcutta & its street food...if u feel filthy eating the street food then u shouldnt try street food thats all..... otherwise even he sits at the cleanest spot and serve u with cleanest covered hand then also u are bound to fall sick because its in ur mind.....

if one eats like a nonsense from any place without verifying that I It is a personal choice...I stay at Delhi and am Bengali from Kolkata snd still visit kolata once or twice annually...I eat these street food like but I am fit & fine...foods like golgappe,parichat, dahi bhalle, paranthes, chole bhature, chole kulches, eggrolls, cutlets, bhelpuri etc etc, they are tooo yummy ...I dont get sick everyday......as a natural phenomena I do get stomach problems or get sick sometimes but not because of the street food...but because of overeating or eating at wrong time or more junk food some times...... I take street food maybe 2-3 times in a month not regularly...one should not eat spicy street food everyday...people from outside India take time to get adjusted to these food.......moreover he could have gone to some other places for street food like burrabazar, Park Street, New market, Gariahat....

I don't know...the video is so sad. I felt sad watching it. Felt sad about your bad experience and bad about the person who made and sold the food to you, I swear the person was doing his work and did it with all good intentions, his intentions of serving you and even making a good presentation of his food - he probably went home that day saying that a foreigner ate his food and was clicking pictures and videos. I really felt bad about it. I have seen so many videos about Indian food and I'm so much curious to go there and taste it.
@chopsticktravel
@chopsticktravel 6 лет назад
The purpose of this video was not to portray the vendor in a negative way. It was to show that it can be easy to eat street food that can cause people to get sick. I feel bad for him too because he was so friendly and actually taught us a lot about the different ingredients he uses. We love India and the food. I think this shouldn't discourage people like yourself from not going to try the foods. Just a reminder to be careful :)

I think the dead giveaway was the man not wearing a shirt. I understand India can be hot but if you look at chefs in hotels surrounded by pots with steam and many burners of fire going they are all dressed in their whites. He did then put on his shirt but it was too late even though Luke told him it's okay.
