I've held gold status with OneWorld for several years, but I have been able to leverage that status to get top-tier status in 3 further schemes, covering all 3 major global airline alliances. In this video I'll share exactly what I did to get those statuses, and share how you might set about leveraging any status you might already hold.
I also talk about how I plan to retain some of those statuses in the medium term, and how some of them are going to lapse... But I was able to further leverage all of that status to make this video!

Solid advice Matt. I used an old almost expired status to to match Executive level with ITA Italian. I then used this to match to Royal Air Maroc who gave me Gold, Oneworld Sapphire level. For me the Oneworld network status has been used to avoid many of the recent airport horrors by taking advantage of fast track, never getting bumped off a flight, guaranteed lounge access and seating perks. Some of my friends with ITA status had trouble being recognised by other airlines.

Dusted off my old Aegean account, then switched my Swissair account to their programme....appears my Aegean year finishes in May....as does my BA.....so may consider doing both if my work flights can make sense of it. Another useful video for my fading grey cells, thanks Matt.

Great stuff as always Matt! In my case I'm more than happy to earn and burn status matches even if it is not feasible for me to retain them after year 1 cos I kind of treat them like product samplers. As in indulge in short term gains until they run out. Like I mentioned in one of your previous videos it has meant I was able to create a status match loop from Oneworld Sapphire (BA Silver) circling thru all the other alliances and eventually giving me Oneworld Sapphire back (via Royal Air Maroc Gold) even I have now lost my BA Silver

Aha starting to become a bit flashy with those FF card shots! I love It. In all seriousness though, your knowledge in the inner workings of FF status were one of the few reasons I subbed to your channel. Anyways, you reminded me to apply for some status matches with Delta and possibly Alaska and test out Skyteam and Oneworld. Actually having said that, is it worth waiting for Virgin to transition to Skyteam next year or should I try out Delta anyways?

Cheers Eric... I've never set myself an editing challenge when recording a video that I've not been able to deliver against... This one did take a while but I'm quite happy I got there! Virgin joining Skyteam is significant and might be worth waiting for - there's no guarantee Virgin will still be matching when they join though so you may wait and be disappointed... It really depends on travel patterns - not much point matching if you're not travelling to take advantage of the status

I've never flown enough to get a status other than Blue. This year I might actually achieve Bronze, but the idea of just having something other than Blue is quite exciting. Maybe I can find a tier point run to tip over to Silver.

It also depends on which class you fly in. I'm flying only twice with BA one 1st class & 2nd business already scheduled 1140 points at silver status. One more r/t to Morocco and I'm there

Thanks Charlie. These videos rarely do well out of the blocks but seem to be slow accumulators... I enjoyed making it and people seem to enjoy watching it which is the most important thing.... I am making a video about my strategy for renewal which I think will be out before Christmas. I'd mention now that the very best fares have been available with a 6 month advance purchase so for a July 8 year end you'd perhaps need to be looking before Christmas...

Impressive... I hold twice the Gold status in Star Alliance... One since 2014 with Aegean...and one since last year with Lufthansa Group where I am a Senator... Covid helped to regain the Senator which I had infrequently in the last 20 years... Aegean Gold is nice and consistently accepted across Star Alliance... But SEN has some add advantages when you fly with LH...

Double star Gold! Makes sense if you do the miles and there's advantages to SEN on LH. I've not got to the stage of redemptions but I sensed that Aegean is a better scheme to redeem points through?

Can you do a video about what perks with each of your gold statuses. I am familiar with Oneworld but not very familiar with the other alliances. For example, do you get lounge access with the Virgin status? It would be nice to have a centralised place for all the perks of the main alliances.

Thanks Daniel. Good question... I sometimes worry that video ideas might end up being a little dull, but then I make a really dull video like this one and people still watch it! Gold is generally lounge / first class check in / priority boarding / extra baggage but a detailed analysis might be worth sharing.... I'll put it on the list!

Excellent Advice Matt and here's the problem you have with the Entry of Virgin Atlantic into Skyteam alliance which one will you keep Virgin Atlantic Flying Club or ITA Airways Volare for Skyteam Alliance? The question is if you have two FFQ mileage programmes with in the same Alliance should I keep the original one you joined to or close that one In my case CX Asia Miles and AS Mileage Plan

The answer to your question is neither - I got both by matching and have nowhere near enough travel planned to retain either.... Maintaining OneWorld and Star Alliance is challenging enough!!! Keeping two in the same alliance makes little sense, unless one has particularly good redemptions and sells points at a good rate or is an Amex points partner... You could then keep a secondary one for that purpose and go for status in the other... I know some keep Lufty / Singapore / Air Canada accounts for that purpose

Hi Matt. You made the point that airlines are not issuing status cards, and this has me wondering about travelling in this digital world. For instance, I see various travel presenters using a smart phone to gain access to or through ticketing, TSA, lounges, showers, menus, gates, turnstiles, busses, what have you - not to mention Starbucks - and it occurs to me that I have no idea how that happens. It looks so simple, yet presumably it takes some advance effort to get one’s phone ready to do its magic. Yes I now own a smart phone, but I am just now figuring out the flashlight function. I can guess that it will soon be mandatory to clear all travel obstacles with a phone. Have you any recommendations for useful videos on this topic? Would you create one?

Thanks Theodore. Very interesting point. My Mum is a very recent convert to Smartphones and we have spoken about how marginalised non-tech people risk being if they don't have phones or even the internet... Even things like applying for a disabled parking badge are really hard to do without tech skills these days, although you'd imagine the average applicant isn't likely to be an advanced IT user... I'll put it on the list of video ideas - I let things sit there for a while and see if a fleshed out video comes into sight around the idea...

Any thoughts on when in the year to do the status match? I’ve just hit gold with BA, and my year ends in January 2024 (with grace period to end of feb 24)…am I better to match as late into my BA tier year as possible?

Interesting question... As late as possible so it lasts as long as possible... But I guess that waiting means you're gambling on the match remaining active... But leave it until you need it....

Dear Matt, I am currently about to become a Classic Plus (Silver) at Turkish Airlines. I travel a lot on OneWorld so I am a Sapphire Member, but now I live in Turkey and therefore started traveling Turkish a lot more. I am still on time to switch my path with Star Alliance to Aegean. Should I switch to Aegean or stay with Turkish?

That's a really difficult question to answer - the immediate point is that Aegean now requires 70k points to renew if you don't fly Aegean - its only 12k if you fly 4 legs. So if you can get those legs on Aegean every year, they are well worth a look

How do you get your business seats so cheap? I’m ba bronze member which has cost a lot of money for example I travelled to Miami and bk from Heathrow that cost £4400 for 2 people and 6 months b4 Heathrow to Mexico City return is well over 5k for 2 people

Hi Andrew. If you have to travel on a specific date to a specific place with relatively little notice of booking then you have to take the price that's offered... I tend to book well in advance with flexibility on the details, or I go wherever the deals are best if I'm booking closer to the date of travel. That does sound like a lot to pay though...

I made a video about which Star Alliance scheme to join a couple of years back and I think its still valid... Aegean was the obvious one for me but it is a little trickier now and was always a little tricky if you're not in Europe... United is revenue based which is great if you spend a load on flights - otherwise Air Canada is well regarded...
