In this video, I share my tips and tricks for catching urban coho. Please comment below if you found this helpful or have other tips! Plenty of coho to go around, let's all share advice!
I filmed a similar video two years ago. Since then I've caught a lot more fish and learned A LOT! Here are my newer lessons learned and techniques for catching coho.

Great video, thanks! I'm trying to get my kayaks prepped for this year. Last year I just started and am learning how to fish the Sound near the Olympia/Tacoma area.

Nice adventure my friend. Enjoyed it! Liked and subbed from a fellow kayaker. Stay safe and connected brother!

Likewise! That catfish you caught was huge.

Switch to a flasher with fin and lures that create their own action. That way you don't have to go so fast. Resi coho can be caught constantly at 40 to 50 ft. I just use dropper weight. Yesterday I used kokanee rod with 8oz dropper and 8inch flasher

Is that the kastking 20 line counter? Just got one and it's so big. Returning it and getting the size 10. Even tho it has the smaller handle, 20 lb drag is enough for me.

@@narwhaladventures spent two hours trying for Ling. Nothing but rockfish. Trolled for an hour before I went in. Picked up an 18” Coho and a couple missed hits.

Sounds like a good trip, especially for the season. Well done on the 18 incher!

Subbed, cool content. I actually wanted to head out myself, do you have recommendations on where to launch my kayak / quiet areas in the sound to fish?
@narwhaladventures
@narwhaladventures 12 дней назад
Good question. I’d actually try to launch near a kayak rental. They strategically place themselves near calm water. It’s actually not a bad idea to rent your first time out because they give you a safety talk. You might even want to ask them if they plan to call back the rentals at a certain time. It’s extremely common this time of year for strong winds to roll in in the afternoon even if it’s currently very calm. For your first couple trips stick really close to shore and make sure it’s a warm and windless day. Just my two cents, there is a lot to kayak safety that’s worth researching. I’m hoping to do a video on it soon actually.

What are the flags you have attached to your net? I like the idea!
@narwhaladventures
@narwhaladventures 7 дней назад
It’s actually just blaze orange duct tape. For about 30 cents you can turn any net into a flag like this.

"Thanks for sharing! I'm still concerned about the impact of the downrigger on my kayak, so I'll stick with free weights this season. Do you have any recommendations? :)
@narwhaladventures
@narwhaladventures 15 дней назад
I’ve never tried it. But you might be able to get away with a relatively heavy banana weight and a spinning herring with no flasher board. Other than that, I’ve been considering looking into dipsy divers but those seem to come with their own headaches.
@loganfishbeard
@loganfishbeard 14 дней назад
The old delta divers can get you down there pretty deep. Just make sure you have a beefy rod to run them on because they really dig hard. Snubber behind them does hurt either.

For coho and king, what is your speed?

@@narwhaladventures So I went last Sunday and launched from shilshole, used a 6 lb free weight to get between 20 to 30 (80 to 130 feets of line at 2 to 2.5 fph) feets deep and didn't catch fish XD. I think I got a tap, but it may be just wishing. Will have to try again.

Coho 3.5-4.5 with the current 2-3 against it Kings 2.5 with the current more like 2 against it.
@604rioso
@604rioso 3 дня назад
what size line are you using? I didn't catch that in the video?
@narwhaladventures
@narwhaladventures 3 дня назад
30# braid main line, 40’ of 25# mono to the flasher, then 3-4’ of 20# fluorocarbon between the flasher and lure. If I snag I want to lose as little gear as possible basically. The mono also is stretchy which helps fight the fish. It’s also wider which facilitates being clipped into the downrigger. The braid just reduces drag compared to other lines.

Where are you launching from?
@narwhaladventures
@narwhaladventures 4 дня назад
Shilshole, but any point significant enough to have a name should work just fine.

Is Coho fishing open in area 10? I can't seem to find it on the the washington fish and wildlife website..Thanks,
@narwhaladventures
@narwhaladventures 5 часов назад
I’d download the Fish Washington app if you can. The rule book is like 70+ pages these days and they frequently add emergency regulations including shutting off seasons that would normally be open for fishing.

How bad is your blowback on that 4lb ball in the sound?
@narwhaladventures
@narwhaladventures 3 дня назад
Bad, basically. It’s usually at like a 60 degree angle when I’m going for coho. I just let out a bunch of extra line and try not to worry about it. Typical is 50-90 feet. I know that only gets me down to 30 to 60.
