How I Kill Weeds In Baby Grass

When you seed new grass killing weeds after grass germination is an important step to achieving the lawn you desire...the problem is however that it's not always the easiest thing to kill weeds in a new lawn because most herbicides will kill the baby grass as well.
In this video I explain how I get around the problem by pairing two different products in newly germinated grass to kill off as many weeds as possible during the establishment phase.
I use Mesotrione in the form of Tenacity (unless I'm applying to Zoysia, Bermuda, Bentgrass, or Fine Fescue) and later in the same day I apply FeHEDTA to the sprouted weeds so long as the temperatures are below 85 degrees and I'm not applying to bentgrass.
This is not a perfect solution however it is as good as it gets for weed control after grass seed germination in most scenarios.

Many warm season for mesotrione? Bermuda is probably one of the most common and might want to disclose that information

Good morning Brian, What's the name of the weed you're pointing at that Mesotrione does not kill? The round one that is low growing? I have tons of them I'm trying to kill in the corner of my yard. Ordered the Natria-FeHEDTA and applied a lower dose (4oz/gallon) since I have a blend of fine and tall fescue. It curled the weed tips but the centers of them still look super healthy 3 days later. The area where the weeds are is heavier on tall fescue than fine. I'm thinking it may be safe to apply a heavier dose with the tall fescue being more dominate there? This is my first full year growing grass, trying to get a handle on those weeds before they really get outta control!

Morning Brian, Thanks for the info. I dethatched my tall fescue/kbg last week and did a light overseed. My lawn was pretty eatablished from my reno last fall and thick. I did have some brown areas from fungus which I treated. I’m having regrets dethatching. Some of my well established turf came up which left some bare areas. I’m glad I did my backyard first…decided not to dethatch the front since it took up more of my healthy grass. I just raked any dead grass out. I’m not sure if I agree with those who say you should overseed tall fescue yearly and dethatch. I had a few weeds during the summer but nothing I could not control by hand pulling. I’m noticing my neighbors clover is seriously spreading into my yard. I know SpeedZone tackles clover quite well. If I mixed up a gallon, can I put it into a spray bottle like you did and spot spray the clover? I do have Tenacity just worried about over applying.

I'm not on board with doing a deep dethatch on fescue in the fall every year either. Fescue doesn't accumulate real thatch so a light power rake is a better option...think about using an electric detahtcher on an above grade setting, this is basically power raking and will get a lot of extra dead material out of the canopy without ever actually scoring the ground or uprooting grass or disturbing too many crowns. Getting dead grass out of the canopy makes it easier to overseed just don't need to go overboard with the depth or aggression. For clover yeah, spray at the first sign of cooler autumn weather. One of my next videos is about killing clover with FeHEDTA in high heat but chemicals like Speed Zone or Triad do tend to work more aggressively. If you are still getting temps in the low 90's then make sure to heavily water the clover patch a day or two before spot spraying, heat/drought stressed turf will be damaged much more easily than healthy hydrated turf. If you ever want to get into using Tenacity more then I suggest buying a bag (on amazon) of infant medicine dosers that tend to go from 1ml up to 10ml. I use them as one-time use Tenacity dosers and just throw them away after I use them once. The Actual tenancity doser is a bit bigger and I don't like trying to clean it out every time...plus not everyone needs to use so much of the product, small yards need to be measured in very small increments and those infant medicine dosers work well in my experience.

@@TurfMechanic Thanks for the feedback. Extremely helpful. Wished I knew about dethatching fescue before I did it. Glad I held off on doing my front yard. I am starting to see germination in the bare spots. Thanks again and looking forward to that video.

Hey Brian, I did some seeding one week ago. My established lawn is really growing and I’m forced to mow before it gets too tall. Will it harm new germination at all?

So I'm adding fine fescue right now, to a mix of KBG, the and fescue, to strengthen grass under the trees. I'm a massive meso fan, so that's a no go with the fine fescue. Am I safe using the FeHedta on a regular basis on fine fescue? My lawn gets hit hard by winter annual weeds, and I'm trying to end that cycle each year. Been using tenacity as a blanket treatment.
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic Год назад
You should be able to use the iron stuff on the fine fescue regularly as needed of course - not sure off the top of my head what if any annual maximums are for use on fine...always new stuff to learn. I've never used it as a blanket app myself either so I'd still err on the side of using it as a spot treatment. You could still blanket with meso though so long as you skip the shaded tree areas that you added fine fescue into.

Can we use the Natria a few days before over-seeding? Because other broad leaf killers you need to wait 3 weeks to over-seed. (I do not want to wait that long)
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic Год назад
I wouldn't hesitate to do that. Then after seed comes up a couple weeks later you could reapply to help kill off any weeds that made it through the first round.

Hi - The Tenacity label says don’t apply to new grass until 4 weeks after emergence or two mows. Can you speak to this? I want to try but now I’m nervous after reading the label.
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic Год назад
Imo that's an abundance of caution and helps prevent bleaching in the event of accidental over application. I've never had issue applying to brand spanking new seedlings of multiple grass types. To be fully safe though follow label instructions and apply at time of seeding and after the 4-week mark.

How long after germination should I wait before walking on the grass to pull baby weeds by hand?
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic Год назад
As long as possible lol, I usually hand seed edges what I can reach and wait until weeds have hit true leaves which are still easy to pluck but gives the baby grass more time to exist with no foot traffic.

Brian i cut out a 4 foot tree ring in preparing for a new 3 foot tall Lilac tree to be planted.Can i use Tenacity in this area to keep weeds out but also be safe in planting the new tree?
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic Год назад
pretty good question and it's one I don't have a strong experience based opinion on. My thought is it should be fine, the tree already has established roots and Tenacity isn't very tough on things that have been growing for a while-it also wears off quickly. Considering your space is so small though why not just just hand weed every couple days for the next couple weeks. Weed seedlings are super simple to pull out of the ground then after a couple weeks most of the weed pressure will probably back off and you could seed grass, mulch, or do whatever you want to the ring. Later on weeds could easily be killed off in infancy stages by just about anything once you feel like the tree rooting is doing well. When I installed my tree in my yard back in Feb 2021 I didn't apply tenancity or any other weed control and everything went just fine. Consider it.

I wish you had a better example for the fine fescue. I've got mostly fine fescue and looking for a pre and post emergent that'll hit clover, dandelion and crabgrass while not harming the ff. :/
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic Год назад
Best bet is to use only FeHEDTA after the fine is at least a couple weeks post sprout. Once it's a few months old then standard pre-emergents can be used just like regular.

@@TurfMechanic I did a full renovation this year with equal parts of creeping red fescue, gladiator hard fescue, radar chewings fescue and mazama kbg. It's been about a month since germination now. Grass is at least 2-3 inches in most areas. So you're saying tenacity would be okay?

Tenacity I know is ok for time of seeding but what about the other product is it safe at time of application of new seed. If so I’d just go extremely light on tenacity this time .
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic Год назад
FeHEDTA won't affect seeds during time of seeding but it also won't work with the same pre-emergent aspect that meso does. It can help knock out weeds that sneak through meso apps after the grass starts growing since it enters the weed through its leaf tissue.

Is FeHEDTA completely different thing from liquid iron supplements used to green up grass? They are both iron and was wondering if they are equivalent just maybe different concentrations?
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic Год назад
They are similar but chelated differently. As I've said in other comments I don't know the scientific differences in how they are chelated differently but I do know that FeHEDTA is a more potent blend of chelated iron that is designed to be absorbed in excess by dicot weeds to the point of toxicity while iron supplements for the lawn are less potent and chelated for optimal grass uptake and use. Those supplements if overapplied can darken a lawn (to the point of blackening) too but even then they may not kill the weeds- I've never tried that though. The science behind how they are made makes a difference. Maybe someone super keen to the science will read this and help explain; I unfortunately am just a dude and not a lab guy. LOL
@homer009x
@homer009x Год назад
Thanks! I was asking because the iron for weed killing is readily available in Canada (since it’s all we can use legally) but iron as a supplement is not. If they were the same, would be a good source of chelated iron supplement.
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic Год назад
@@homer009x I suppose if you ever wanted to experiment you could try using an FeHEDTA at a super-duper low rate as a blanket app on a small grass area just to see what (if anything) happens to the grass. I'd be curious to know.
