Let me share how I landed 3 offers with a shit GPA. I was enjoying college too much, and over estimated my studying abilities. I thought that could pass by without much effort. Everything changed when I landed in academic probation. I was holding onto each semester, hoping I would be able to boost my GPA, or get the boot from engineering. The first and biggest thing that helped me, was getting an internship. You might be wondering how the Heck I managed to land an internship with a shit GPA (and no, I did not have people who hooked me up). I did it by taking initiative. I never had any luck at my school's career fair and I was sad that my friends were all landing internships and I wasn't. So I decided to take things into my own hands. I went out and cold called every local company who could use a mechanical engineer and discussed what I wanted from them (the old school method). If there were signs of interest, I would literally come into their office dressed up with my resume when they opened. One of my key point was that i was in it for the experience and wanted to learn and shadow them and wouldn't mind doing it for free. The head engineer at one of the companies I visited gave me a chance. He told me that he liked how I took the initiative and how no one searches for a job the old fashion way like how I did, so he took the chance and gave me an internship. That led to 2 additional internships else where and ultimately allowed me to have 3 offers. I graduated with a 3.1 for those wondering. As long as you meet the minimum req. You'll be fine. The key is to physically go network in person. I've done some recruiting myself for my current company and as long as you meet minimum requirements, all that matters is whether or not I like you and what value you could bring to the company. You gotta learn to be a people's person. Another Huge help are national organizations career fairs. SWE, NSBE, SHPE, and SASE are all worth the trip. They will literally give you an interview on the spot and and offer too. Ive always been pretty successful at all the national conference i went too. A must at these events is to attend their little networking events. This is where they will automatically sign you up for interviews if they like you before the actual career fair even takes place. (They don't tell you this ahead of time. This is from personal experience and people I've talked too.) Hope you found this information helpful. I know it was tough and scary having to figure it all out on my own.

Internships and experience are EVERYTHING. Companies would rather hire someone with a 3.0 GPA with experience, then someone with a 4.0 with no experience. No degree is safe anymore, you need something that sets you apart from people. Networking with people, experience, projects, are way more important now a days then GPA

Networking 100%
@Diaming787
@Diaming787 2 года назад
Then what is the point of classes and exams and knowledge then?
@levibeam100
@levibeam100 2 года назад
@@Diaming787 don’t confuse knowledge with tests. Tests see how much information you can study and remember in a short amount of time. Doing a calc 3 equation will only help you in very few jobs. Your engineering classes teach you the fundamentals of engineering. You should not expect to go into the industry, industry ready. You gain real life work experience that is invaluable in the real world. You don’t make the same circuit someone has made 100,000 times. You don’t solve the same problem that has been solved a million times. That’s not what school is made for. School is to get you that piece of paper to separate you from others that don’t have it. School, especially in engineering, is made to keep things from being saturated. Already there are tons and tons and tons of applicants for every job. And those people HAVE an engineering degree. A degree keeps things from being saturated. It’s a hoop you must jump through to get to the real world outside of school if you want to be an engineer at 99.999999% of places. Internships and Co-ops are the best way to get a job outside of school. But above that, you gain networking. Someone you worked with left and made their own company, and you performed very well, so they sought after you to get a job. Internships lead to networking. But even with that, linkedin is great. Career fairs are great. Getting your name out there in any way is good.

I 100% agree with what you said. Over the past 18 months or so, I applied so many times I've lost count. I kept getting rejection after rejection, some were my fault completely (messed up some applications and interviews) and some were because of the pandemic. But I kept applying - even for the ones I didn't feel like I was qualified for. Always the youngest person in the room. Finally, I landed a job at a great company that is going to put me through my degree all while giving me experience of working as an engineer in multiple different departments. They've got the nicest recruiters I've ever met despite being a pretty huge company that works globally with some of the biggest companies in the agriculture and construction industry. It still feels unreal to think about it, but I made it. And once again, the video is extremely accurate. You should put as much information about the sort of hardware and software you can use as well as the sort of projects you did, as reasonably can.

I have an engineering degree and passed the FE exam in electrical engineering. My GPA was 3.45. I did everything this guy did and more, and I never got a sign that a real human ever even looked at my resume. I graduated in 2015. Getting an engineering degree was the worst financial mistake of my life, even worse than randomly giving away half of my net worth because I had given up on ever accomplishing anything in life. If you want to go work in a warehouse, go work your butt off and get into debt getting an engineering degree.

Glad you found it! I never took the FE exam but I was signed up for it my senior year of college. Thanks for the resume upload and permission to use the format. I do have two questions, though, as my resume is kind of void, imo. 1) If you're still a sophomore level with not a lot of experience or relevant coursework in the specific field you're aiming for, could you still put previous coursework and future coursework (classes you plan on taking)? 2) I have some experience in research with a group and a professor, but would you put jobs you've held/currently hold even if they're irrelevant?
@zachstar
@zachstar 6 лет назад
In my video on ‘how to write a resume for college students’ I put a link to my freshmen year resume cause I had the same issue. You can put future and past coursework but don’t go TOO far in the future. Don’t put your senior year classes or anything. Then if you have nothing else to put, include jobs you’ve had even if not relevant. On my freshman year resume I think I put my first job which was at big 5 sporting goods. It at least shows someone else was willing to hire you.

Hey - Thanks for the video. I'm in my 3rd year now, and will be doing internship soon. My concern is: What do you do when you get 3 job offers? Thank you if anyone knows what I mean, and can answer
@alexisidro
@alexisidro 3 года назад
Good question. I wouldn't keep all companies waiting. The obvious approach is to respond to the one you want to work at first and give them an answer or at least some notice that you are considering other offers. I'd ask them when they need an answer by, and go from there. If you don't hear back from the company you really want, I'd follow up with them and ask about the status of your application.

I was in the same situation. I basically asked what type of work (EE) i would be doing. Then i considered other things like comute and pay. But like Alex say dont keep them waiting for too long.

I enjoy technology and want to build it. Like computers, phones, t.v.'s or solar panels. But I can't figure out which major would be best for me. Does anyone have any advice.

It’s interesting even with 3.81and a few internships you received rejections, networking and luck really seems to trump all wouldn’t you say?

I'd say that prior work experience and a good personality is worth more than grades. When we hire at out firm we mainly choose people who will work well with the group. You're going to learn 10x more by working than what you did at school anyway so that's the reason that grades doesn't really matter. When you're at school you won't even have access to the same programs and books that you will spend 99% of your time with when you start working. The degree mainly tells us that the person will be able to learn things really fast and be able to apply our way of doing things.

tbh you should be more specific about the whole job thing.. after all most jobs (EVEN JOBS FOR STUDENTS!!!) require some kind of experience before you can start working

Hi everyone, hope you have a nice day! I have one quick question. I owned a flipflop phone(s) since 2009, until 2 years go, I got an lg phone. I use it nothing more than 10 minutes a week, I've downloadeded facebook for nothing longer than a week. Plus, I've never owned a computer. But have had some experience from the schools computers. And I don't know any programming languages. Anyways, I'm currently a HS senior, and I want to study Software Engineering. Do you think I could make it through? And become a skilled Software engineer?

Jadvar one of my friends is doing software engineering and on a really good gpa and she didn’t know any programming before uni. You will definitely have the potential to pass however you might find it a bit boring and frustrating if you’ve never done it before.
