Tips from a Canadian: 1. Uniqlo ultra light down compact vests are great to layer underneath oversized wool coats without creating bulk in the sleeves. Thick sweater + uniqlo vest + wool coat easily gets me to up to -15 weather. 2. Costco makes high quality AND affordable hiking socks - they're usually around 80% merino wool and around $3 usd per pair. 3. Fleece-lined leggings, tights and pants will keep your bottom half warm!

Thank you for the tips I am in Whitby, Ontario and I am trying to go without my snow pants like I have done last 5 years. I invested in a TNA Super Puff Long version which is a start but I need to update my closet too if I can avoid my snow pants or onesie ski suit just to keep warm I would do that. I have chronic illnesses and I need to stay super warm. So again thank you so much for your advice

I think this layering idea is great if you're going to be outside for a fair bit and want to still look fashionable. My personal approach on really cold days is thick socks in boots, toque, gloves, scarf and a long parka. The parka simplifies things - it's one piece I can take off so I don't melt on transit/indoors, rather than removing multiple layers.

One dilemma for me is always that here in my school, it’s SO WARM inside that if I do layering and only take off one layer after going inside, I’d sweat so much. So in the coldest days of winter I usually just wear a very warm and plain ski jacket plus a sweater and a T-shirt underneath. The coldest days here can be -20 Celsius though, at that time all the fashion goes out of the window cuz I need to be alive hahahah

You're right, the layering is key. I've bought sheepskin insoles and my cats love them. They hook them out of my boots and treat them like furry prey, carrying them around and growling possessively over them! 😹

Thumbs up for sock science, lol. Instead of leggings, I use fleece-lined tights. That way I already have my socks incorporated which, along with warm insoles, is usually plenty. If I'm spending a few hours outdoors, I can still layer over a pair of socks without too much bulk.

So jealous, truly, not just being funny. After a week of over 40 degrees I watched this to try and remember it's possible to be cold, a concept that seems unfathomable right now. I hate the heat, would love to be wearing layers etc., I love winter clothes, as you are showing here, they are so much more interesting and stylish, and more flattering too, more opportunity to hide bits if you'd like to. You look great Emma, as usual, but you know how to put together an "effortless" outfit.

A traditional flat ‘at is also warm and isn’t as itchy as a beanie - that presses your hair against your head and it’s torture. Traditional woollen work socks are also warm, as are Dubarry boot liners/Hunter welly socks if your knee boots are loose enough around the calf. Alpacas are so sweet and their breath does not smell if you get close to them.

The most common type is Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum), comprising nearly 90% of all cotton produced around the world. The remaining 10% is made up of two higher-quality cottons - Egyptian cotton and pima cotton. Both of these cottons are actually the same species of “extra-long staple cotton” (Gossypium barbadense), with longer, silkier individual cotton fibers for a premium fabric that is both luxuriously soft and incredibly strong. While Egyptian cotton, when it’s authentic, is a premium fabric that originates in the Nile River Valley, pima cotton has a decidedly American story. Early 1900s that the U.S. Department of Agricultural got involved, working with the Pima tribe of Arizona to perfect this young crop. It was in honor of these pioneering farmers that the USDA named the American extra-long staple variety “pima cotton." , but , much like coffee, cashmere or wine, the quality of cotton varies greatly. Thanks to ideal growing conditions, extra-long staple length and hand harvesting, Peruvian pima cotton is the world’s finest, prized for its exceptional durability, softness and brilliant luster.

I know I'm super late to comment here, but yes I agree with you all!! I also find it weird to see female network anchors wearing sleeveless dresses and tops all winter long, too. Just a strange trend I've seen in the last decade since everyone insists on showing off their fake tanned arms--whether they're toned or not. Feel like no one dresses to suit their body types, season, or occasion anymore. SMH 🤷🏻‍♀️

I wish you wouldn’t advertise Everlane so much. They charge so much for tax and duties and if you make a mistake on the size they don’t refund you the tax or duties on the items you return. To find this information you have to dig around for it and I don’t think many people would so be warned! I ended up having to pay £130 for 1 pair of jeans because of this!

Love the tips, Emma - but I do have a question. How do you handle the layering as you're going in and out of places? My biggest issue is the darn near heatstroke I get the second I'm indoors.
@EmmaHill
@EmmaHill 4 года назад
I don't really have that problem but if I am in somewhere for a long time - like a shop or restaurant then I will take off a layer or 2 depending on what I'm wearing and either place them next to me if I'm sitting or carry them 👍🏼

I find the heat tech stuff also wicks away moisture.(?) not sure if it’s supposed to. But I’ve worn it under a NorthFace pullover and a regular turtleneck would have me sweating, but the heat tech sort of turns off indoors. It’s weird to explain, but I do like it.

I live in London and this is just an exaggeration of layers to wear here.. I mean there are cold days but apart from wearing a thermal top I don’t think the majority of Londoners as you say we wear any other layers apart from a jumper, coat and scarf and gloves and we don’t freeze to death walking around. Maybe if you are a tourist you lo need all of this for a whole day exploring but really, you have to be in a very very cold day which even in Jan and Feb is not everyday.

Ainhoa Benavente I live in Finland and don’t wear this many layers, even though it’s definitely colder here than the UK. Although, having lived in London, it does often feel colder there than here, because the houses are often not quite as well insulated/people don’t turn the heating on. So you end up being cold all the time.

Just a quick Uniqlo tip that has changed my winter coat game! A couple of years ago I bought one of their ultra light down jackets with the sole purpose of wearing it underneath my woolen coats. It is super soft, super light and super warm and makes transitioning my tailored wool coats from autumn to winter a treat ❄️. It even has little buttons on the front so you can wear it under V-neck coats without being able to see it. I really think you should check it out.

Love this video... I actually didn’t know that about layerings socks. I layer my 10year sons socks when he’s playing football in the winter. He always comes back to me saying “Mummy I can’t feel my feet” I thought it was the cold but now know I’ve cut off the circulation on his poor little feet. Emma thank you for that tip alone. Also top tip as well for any body that’s interested.... Pennys (otherwise known as Primark).. have Over the Knee socks that are the things ever. They have thin ones and thicker ones with wool content. I have lots of pairs of these and absolutely love them and best of all cheap as chips. I have to say I’m not big into layering myself - I find it very uncomfortable (I can’t stand the bulked up feeling). I’m a long sleeve therma heat vest and thin knit kind of girl. Over that I wear lightweight feather and down coat. But I love your style Emma and could watch you all day talking about clothes.

Pima cotton is valued for its durability, because longer fibers mean a softer and stronger fabric, it's also highly resistant to pilling. It is originally from Perú. Also alpaca is much more sustainable than cashmere FYI

I wish you would use and support more ethical and sustainable brands and not 'fast fashion' or ' high street' stores. For example, for all of your base layers you use . I'm sure you could find all of these pieces by a sustainable and ethical brand such as 'Icebreaker '. Everlane really isn't that ethical or sustainable...all of their alpaca sweaters are blended with synthetics ...you don't mention that. And their Pima cotton ( all cotton) they use are GMO and not organic so very unsustainable and unethical. For the price of other items you purchase you could afford to purchase from many of the truly sustainable brands ...ie, for sweaters Onling and there are so many others.

Love the ideas! I never quite knew how to layer, got many new ideas thanks to you 😊 If I may, I would love to share a Parisian cashmere brand with you. I am sure they have a shop in London too. It’s Eric Bompard. I have tried sooo many brands and they’re cashmere feels the best. The scarfs and beanies are amazing and the price range is a bit on the high end but way less than acne for example, and the quality is just exceptional. I have my scarfs for 5 years and they are like new! Worth having a look. ( they do amazing sales also) 😊

I just wanted to say how much I’ve enjoyed finding your channel. I’ve lost almost 3 stone and have gone from wearing frumpy ugly clothes that made me feel awful to being completely inspired and have overhauled my wardrobe with pieces I’ve found second hand that have given me confidence and a fresh start and mindset with what to wear. Thank you ☺️ 💫

I love Emma style but in what situation would you need those types of layers?? In Canada, we layer when we plan a day of outdoor sport and that's not including jeans! On regular days, even with a -31 C feel outside, I would wear long sleeves, a warm coat, warm boots and going on with ease. I can't imagine arriving somewhere with that many layer of clothing! Emma you must be REALLY sensitive to cold. Anyway you manage to making it look really good and thank you for showing warm clothes option in the winter!

Dang, you have actually given a lot of extremely good advice! I wasn't confident when you said this is what you wear in a London winter since I live somewhere a bit colder and often have wet-cold weather. I legitimately suffer from always being so cold (medical condition and the doctor said it's important I'm warm throughout the entire winter since I'm prone to ear/sinus/etc. infections... I know, I'm mega special 🙄), however, I'm not far off from how you dress, I just never thought to do a thin cashmere followed by a thicker, bulkier sweater. I stopped wearing synthetic and I also used to wear too many tight layers so this concept is better-- and much more stylish. I also do down vests and wear the lined Timberlands to keep warm. Most RU-vidrs will say their winter fashion is a t-shirt followed by a thin cashmere cardigan which couldn't ever work for me. I have subscribed! Thanks girl!

Hi Emma ! Try Sorel boots with a pair of cashmere socks they are beyond warm, plus super comfy and also waterproof and look awesome too! Got my first pair this year and they are the best thing I have ever bought- they are also super grippy if it’s icy/snowy 😉. Been nearly living in mine so far this year. Love your videos as always, always my first view on a Sunday morning ❤️ xxx

Ultra warm for the win! Would be perfect for sled riding and ice skating on the lake! Perfect for someone like me who doesn't like a super thick coat while shoving snow! Thanks for the video! Good timing! Not a fan of cold legs or bum.

Hi, you are wearing a couple of alpaca wool items. Do the Everlane alpaca wool things also loose much hairs? I recently bought a alpaca wool sweater of &Other Stories but I returned it because the hairs of the sweater were all over the place. I read about the freezing hack, but I haven't got the room. So how is the alpaca of Everlane?
@EmmaHill
@EmmaHill 4 года назад
It does lose a little but not a lot, but because its a natural fibre it will happen a little. 👍
