Nice to meet you. i'm Japanese. I watched your RU-vid channel for the first time. It gave me the motivation to study English. Thank you so much. I'm not very good at English. I hope my English expressions aren't rude.

@@desolategaming1970 I agree with you, the tones is quite confusing (I'm half Chinese half Japanese) even now I get my tones confused sometimes when learning a new word. Overall Japanese was easier for me to learn because the grammar is quite straightforward but both languages are quite difficult.

My problem is that I don't take classes or have any native speaker close to me, so i have to learn by myself, but i don't know how to teach myself it and remember all of it and apply it to things. ;( I have the Genki 1 book but I can never bring myself to sit down and learn it
@Iruko

You can (and should) use italki. Realizing this does cost money (approx 15-20 eur per hour for a lesson), I find it to be the far most useful method for speaking Japanese. Not only do you have subjects you can discuss to your likings, you're actually paying someone to keep up a conversation (which in real life one, such as myself, might find hard) as well as have someone who talks slowly, clearly and corrects you where and when needed. If you haven't already, give it a shot.

A really good way is to go onto VRChat, you don't need VR to play this; it's for all Steam users, and it's free. Then go into a Japanese world and either just stand nearby and listen to them, or if you're feeling brave, actually talk to them. Although protip lol, since you are technically eavesdropping on people, you should find an avatar that is either small and hard to see, or look down or avoid eye contact so they just ignore you and keep talking.

If your lucky, you can find underrated Japanese streamers who are very kind enough to let their viewers chat with each other and themselves interact with us. P.S. Don't be rude and don't expect people will always read your comment and respond back. Just vibe with them.

My problem with studying by myself is that I have no guidance. Sometimes I learn around 15-20 new kanji a day and sometimes only some new words, then I start looking at grammar and well I feel like I don't improve. I already know a lot of Japanese but when I see a text I can't seem to be able to understand what it says. I know the kanji, I know the meaning, I might know one reading but all together in one text just seems too much, even if it's only a JLPT5 short story. THOSE READING KUN ON YOMI YOMU JUST DONT WANT TO GET INTO MY HEAD it's like I'm learning kanji for nothing

I went to that big bookstore in Japan, the one outside of Nagatacho near Akasaka (the biggest bookstore in the world that sells Japanese study books) and got like 5 books on this date last year I think (because I was in Japan in Feb 2016), and still haven't really used them. :/ Studying Japanese daily was also my resolution, but then my job threw more hours at me after someone quit, then I picked up a distance learning course and... I completely agree with the 7th point, and all the other ones for all that matters😂 but that's the one that's more relatable, i study Japanese at my University and what our teachers always suggest is that we use the "Shadowing" technique, which consists in listening to a conversation (usually on a cd from a book) and looking at the written conversation while repeating along with the speaker. Now that i think about it its almost like karaoke but instead of songs you "sing" along ordinary conversations😂

But how to SOUND Japanese though? I’ve recently listened to my pronunciation of words and some simple sentences and it was... meh. I mean I am glad I didn’t sound like a fucking idiot (I hope lol) but it felt like I was missing something. I was copying native speakers’ intonation and even if I managed to copy it like 100% I still couldn’t see a Japanese person saying that. (That’s my method. I record what I say, close my eyes, listen to recording and try to pretend like it’s native speaker. If it works and I can see Japanese person saying that sentence I know that I managed to do it,)

Loretta, I have a philosophical question for you. At one point do you believe one is able to answer the "Do you speak Japanese?" question in the affirmative? When you've reached fluency? N1? N5? What do you think?.... uh... asking, um, you know, for a friend... >.>

ある程度、日本語ができるなら、図書館やブックオフなどで、小説から始まり学術書をまずは1000冊を目標にすれば、達成後に凄い上達すると思います。

Point 7: You have to practice producing the language. Bang on! Point 3: Buying useless things; e.g., sets of Japanese language textbooks I'll never use. Guilty as charged. Thanks for the great tips!

I'm guilty of all except number 3. I started to get there, but I caught myself. I realized it makes no sense to get countless of apps, free ebooks, etc. if I'm not utilizing what I already have. I just can't figure out what to study, what to read, etc... (-_-,)

Q-Q I don't have any native speakers that aren't online ... every source I can turn to *IS* online ... It's not like I can go to my local store and pick up a "How to write Japanese 101" book ... sigh, Oh well I suppose.

I agree practice the language not study! (studying is just for fun!) but without a doubt the best practice is active listening and reading! since you can't make mistakes or reinforce bad habits! of course eventually you'll have to take the plunge and converse! if you aren't recording or transcribing those conversations they probably won't stick very well unless they are held often, which comes down to a matter of frequency (just like eating, sleeping, exercise) frequency is a key element people often forget! Personally I try to spend at least 3 hours a day (sometimes straight, sometimes spaced throughout the day.) in some way either reading, listening or conversing in Japanese. I hardly write since it isn't yet a goal of mine (I type a lot if you can count that!) But I don't have metrics to prove whether or not that 3 hour time block is an effective frequency.

I'm learning Japanese, but I can only do stuff with hiragana. I don't really know any words. Should I focus on vocabulary?

Thanks, I needed this video, I especially agree with the point about too many readings for kanji, it does put me off study altogether when I see too many kanji readings. But I do all of them a bit. My wife is Japanese, I live in Japan and even still I forget to practice with her

Odd question: For Kanji, I understand that convention dictates On yomi be written in Katakana and Kun yomi be written in Hiragana. Some language-learning books and apps will write both yomi in Hiragana. In your experience, is the convention important and do you think resources sticking to the convention are best for learning Kanji?

I don’t know when I will next be able to go to Japan so speaking is very difficult for me especially when I’m already shy when speaking in English(my mother tongue) but I at least try to repeat what is said out loud so that I can pronounce the words I’m still very jankey and broken up with longer sentences but I’ll keep trying!

I'm studying japanese and I'm a beginner. My main language is portuguese, but I learned english alone... so if japanese will be your first foreign lenguage that you will be studying, I have one tip: First, you start to read/listen, so you start to writte and after that you start to speak.
