We are often told at a young age that our abilities are dictated by our predefined talents, I believe that is wrong. Struggle and adversity is something to become more comfortable with, not something to be afraid of. RU-vidr, creator of "Learn Quick": the learning process from zero to hero
Mike is a filmmaker working in Scotland. He creates short films that document his learning process. Every video he makes, Mike chooses a skill he attempts to learn from scratch. His film give a candid look at the frustration, pain, joy and satisfaction of the real world learning process told from the perspective of the average person. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I really really love his approach to life: trying to expand your horizons by going out of your comfort or "wired" zone. That being said, we have to admit that most of the skill he has learned are either tricks (breaking a glass with voice, juggling, throwing an axe, splitting an apple etc.) or developed to entry-level proficiency (skiing, shooting a rifle). The learning curve is steep in the first part in most of these (meaning you can get to be ok-ish in a reasonable time). Moreover, some skills borrow from others. For example, limb coordination is developed in both skateboarding and ski. Knowing chords helps when learning violin if you've been playing guitar for x years. What I'm trying to say is that none of these will land you a living in that specific field unless you develop them with extra hours and hours to make you a teacher or a professional. For hobby-level, though, I think all of us should challenge ourselves to try something different. I'm not trying to take away from Mike, what he does is amazing, nonetheless, and is inspiring to anyone who feel stuck.

Love Mike's channel. However, a lot of people take 10000 hours in a wrong way. It doesn't tell you how much time it takes you to learn a new thing. It tells you how to become a master in one craft. Repeated practice of ten thousand hours doesn't take you anywhere. Deliberate practice, upping the obstacles for 10000 hours is what makes you a true master of your craft. So if you want to learn a lot of things, 20 hours should be good enough for you to learn nearly anything. But if you truly wanna become a master, it's gonna take you 10000 hours for sure

i recon 20hrs is for generally easier skill, it would be interesting to see what a doctor can learn in 20hrs, or what an engineer can learn in 20hours, things that are simply operational, very possibly in 20hrs like ping pong or badminton, but to be an engineer, like can you study the entire subject of aerodynamics in 20hrs, study past year question maybe.

Yeah you can still learn a lot of different skills even when we are old, after all this is why we evolve to have this brain. But there are certainly things we can never learn when we get older, like perfect pitch and reaction capabilities. It's harsh truth but there are things we will never learn if we missed the right time, and this golden time is when we are still children.
