I recently uploaded a language update video, showing how much Swedish I've learned after 2 years (link below) and you guys seemed to find it really interesting. But there were lots of questions about what tools, resources and ideas I had for helping other people learn the language quickly too. Let me know if you find this video useful, then maybe I'll do some more in the future!

I've been learning Swedish for almost three years. I read lots of articles, but as I tend to look up every word that I don't know, I've always found it a bit daunting to pick up a book. On your advice, I started reading my first book today, but being very selective in which words I look up. It's going really well so far, so thanks for the brilliant tip!

Tjee Greg, I hope you're doing good! I really find your tipps pretty helpful, those are very good methods. I've started learning sv in February with SwedishPod101, they have very good content, xeom conversations, formal, informal, common phrases and slang expressions, also words. The have pretty much everyhting for every level and you still a bonus video which teaches you how to say "happy new year" in 34 more languages, very fun, haha. About being immersed and listening to podcasts, comprehensible content and getting in touch with the people and things about the counrry is also very good, I totally agree with you man! And some things here you mentioned I didn't use to do, but I thank you for showing me and I'll add to my habits, haha, Tack tack tack! And by the way, jag ska gifta mig...lol, hell nah, happy fools day🤣

First of all, I want to thank the author of the channel for making this beautiful and useful video for us! Many people are embarrassed to speak a foreign language if they have no speaking skills. People are afraid to hear criticism from others in their address. It all comes from having a psychological complex - to make a mistake. But, after all, he who does nothing is not wrong! In Yuriy Ivantsiv's workshop "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign language" states that we need to talk as much as possible: with yourself, with the mirror, with inanimate objects, with children and with pets. Find an interlocutor in real life or online. Talk without shyness. People won't care how you speak. They understand that you are a foreigner, as long as they understand you. They may even acknowledge your progress in their language and compliment you. However, always be prepared for criticism of your speaking skills. If you have the will to speak, you will gain an interesting interlocutor to consolidate your knowledge. Everyone is strewn with mistakes - don't be afraid to learn from them. As the Latin wisdom says, "walk and thou shalt not go astray". In the book "Polyglot Notes" by Yuriy Ivantsiv an entire chapter is devoted to the development of spoken language. Here you will find many useful tips and each student can choose a technique that suits him or her best! I wish you all the best of luck in your language learning!

When you are proficient enough you should switch your subtitles to Swedish, it's a great way to pick up the vocabulary. I am Swedish and have had English subtitles on for everything since I was young, which has probably helped me learning the language.
@JustaBritAbroad
@JustaBritAbroad 3 года назад
Ah sorry for any confusion Calle, that's actually what I do🤗 I never listen with English subtitles anymore, only Swedish ones! I just thought for some people who are maybe a bit newer to the language than me, it would be worth mentioning that beginning with your native subtitles could be a good place to start so it doesn't all start to feel super overwhelming. But I completely agree with you, as soon as you start to feel a bit more confident, make the switch, so you can hear how the words sound at the same time as you read how they are spelt🤗🤗

Thanks for the tips for learning Swedish man. Personally I have practiced with Duolingo a lot but I have always felt that despite that, I cannot understand usual conversations very well. I didn't know about "Sveriges radio på lätt svenska" and I started it from today. It's really useful. Currently, I need to listen to a podcast two-three times with the text, to understand the content fully, but I hope to rely on the text less. Would you also recommend studying a textbook to understand the grammar so as to help with the fluency? And how long did it take you approximately to be fluent?
@JustaBritAbroad
@JustaBritAbroad 3 года назад
No problem man! Glad it was useful for you :) and I'm glad that you decided to start with the på lätt svenska podcast! I honestly can't over-emphasise how useful I found it. Just getting into the routine of hearing Swedish for 10 minutes a day in such an accessible format was really helpful for me. And then I'd check out 8sidor news if you want to read and have it narrated to you at the same time, so you can get used to looking at how the language is spelt etc. as well :)

Instead of going to Netflix you could go to Disney+ and watch Disney movies, since you've probably seen them in the original language then it's good to see the Swedish version. That's what I did with English when I was 11, I started watching Lion King in English
@JustaBritAbroad
@JustaBritAbroad 3 года назад
thanks for the tips Katarina! I actually don't have Disney+ which is probably why I'd not stumbled upon this idea already, but you're not the first person to suggest Disney films in Swedish, so maybe I'll have to take a look into this. Clearly worked for you, your English is great! thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed it😊

@@JustaBritAbroad Yeah, that's thanks to tv-shows, movies, games are never translated here if they're meant for teenagers or older. I also read a lot of English fantasy books. Personally for tip 3, I prefer to watch a TV show from a language I am familiar in and switch the Swedish subtitles on. That way I know suggested ways to express, say, an English expression in Swedish. In other words, the other way around. And that's because I am the type who wants to know the Swedish equivalent of English words/expressions I am using at the moment. Children's books, even for 5-6 year olds are not necessarily simple Swedish in that they use words or expressions that you don't encounter completely on Duolingo.
@JustaBritAbroad

I think all your tips are useful when it comes to learning a foreign language, but please remember to make a new video when you are comfortable with the next level, i e having left "På lätt svenska" behind you and reading/listening to more advanced things. You have probably also noticed that we Swedes are your worst enemy when it comes to learning Swedish; we see a great opportunity to practice English in you. :-)
