Amen brother, preach!!! Theory and technique is only about 65% of the work, the next 35% to get that feel comes from allowing the spirit to flow through you. That part you won't find in any music book - its a solo journey with you and the spirit.
When I started teaching my son to play trumpet at age 3 ... he was frustrated because I would not use sheet music. I told him that he would learn that later. I wanted him to learn music was not notes on a page. We worked on playing by ear for the first 3 years. I believe there are multiple parts to being a well rounded musician. Traditional education is a part but having an ear is most important. That being said, I have met people who were taught completely by the Holy Spirit. Some picked up their instrument very late in life with no training, traditional or otherwise. God bless!
This is incredibly deep. I'm a drummer who learned the same way as you. I love ministering with musicians who are led by the spirit. When my relationship with God grew, so did my drumming. And now I am adding the technical. God bless you and your ministry.
Your “play by ear” DVD taught me to do just that about 6 or 7 years ago. Now I am ALWAYS teaching people the number system and sharing what I learned with them. You’re a TRUE blessing. God bless you man!
What inspire me to lear and keep learning piano, my own way, is love. Couse Music is harmony... Im not Christian, but love, ( God ) is in every person heart. We only have to feel it. Thank u for your words my friend ! 👍
Jamal/Everyone. Jamal is on it. The spirit is very important! If I may testify. I agreed to play a funeral at a funeral home. Well, the organ they had needed a bunch of work - it was almost like every other key didn't work. A lady started singing with a broken voice. All of the sudden, there was a shift - the broken voice started sounding good and somehow I was able to move with her. This was at the time that people were viewing the body for the last time. A well respected musician/technician walked over to the organ and said, I want to see your settings because this organ is sounding great. There were no settings because the stuff (drawbars) were broken. I really thought he was joking because this instrument was in really bad shape and it's not like that I'm a fantastic musician - I would like to be. It was really that God came in and shifted everything. There was girl that was crying uncontrollably before that and now she was not crying anymore. TGBTG!
Thanks for the motivation, Jamal! I needed this video. I sometimes get discouraged with playing piano and intimidated with wanting to play on Sundays, cuz i dont wanna mess up.
Yeah, everything is energy like scientists say, all is God & God is all like many religious folks know... And both sides, science and spirituality meet nicely in music. Sacred geometry, cymatics, healing frequencies... everything is related!
This is one of the best videos I've seen. Thanks for the encouragement. God sends the motivation right when you need it. I've been really studying lately. The spirit is real. Avery Sunshine leaves me in see each times she performs as the Spirit lights her up. Keep letting God use you child. 😇🙏⛪
Man...may God bless you Sir for your humility, honesty, and transparency. That alone was the real blessing in this video. That hard knocks way of coming into your musicianship and anointing is the truth. Spend all the time you can playing, tinkering, and being in the environment to learn -and let the Holy Spirit grow you. So simple and yet SO true. Each person will experience their own musical journey that is different from those great players that they aspire to be like-and in turn if they keep pressing, they’ll come into just what God wants them to manifest into. This is the stuff that people don’t usually share. Excellent video man.
God bless you SO much man! this has spoken to me EXACTLY where I'm at right now and it's what I need to keep persisting. You're so right that the younger generation doesn't understand struggle... art is CHEAP nowadays and the spirit isn't even wanted by so so many. I'm gonna get at the keys and keep GRINDING and putting in the leg work - be blessed big bro :)
Jamal you sound like you are so deep into who you are into the word and your music. I was never taught to cook the measurement and recipes are not knowledgeable to me I go by sight and cook it. That's a gift that I thank God for everyday. Thank you for sharing your message.
Praise God I Receive This Word In My Struggle To Learn and Be Taught By The Holy Spirit. I'm Believing God To Play Through Me Prophetically In Word and Song To Destroy Yokes Of Bondage!!!! Thanks For The Encouragement! God Bless You!
I agree. I'm in a situation where I'm learning all my materials all over again. Haven't played in 3 years, so now I work over the road and just so desperately trying to get back to where I was when I first started. I'm a drummer of atleast 20 years and keys bout 10. But haven't been good enough to play for anybody as of yet. I really need to let the Holy Spirit lead and teach me. Thank you for your words of encouragement.
Awesome! That is the same way I learned. The Lord and many, many hours playing. You are right, we had no RU-vid and no dvds. Another thing I love about the spirit and playing by ear, you can play the same song different ways and not be tied to a piece of music. I’ve seen musicians that were highly skilled, but not anointed. And would see musicians that could hit ONE note on the organ, and not even a chord, and at that time so many people were blessed and delivered. Because the Lord anointed it.
Yeahh bro I’m a beginner/intermediate bass player. And the frustration and discouragement is real. But it is a desire given me from God. That I may play. And you said in another video. That God gifts us our gifts..our desires but it’s for us to have to tap in and unlock it because it is already there. God bless you brother. You’re a great encouragement.
For two years I faithfully practiced scales, chord progressions and arpeggios in every key, for 2-3 hours every day until I got burned out. I'm still not great but I'm glad I learned scales because It helps me to learn songs I like faster. Motivation is a factor. If you get bored or you don't feel you're making progress it's easy to become disappointed and give up. Back when all the greats were learning to play, there wasn't a lot of choice. In today's world there's a lot of distraction so sticking with it may be tougher.
I agree. You need a good mixture of the technical and The Holy Spirit. I didn't learn the right way either. I've spent HOURS in front of a radio (and later RU-vid) trying to dissect parts of songs and getting up from teh keyboard frustrated when I couldn't produce the sounds I was hearing. lol NOw, I can learn a simple song in my head while listening to it on a drive.
Bro! Glad you are back! I've been praying for God to bless me to sing and play an instrument I've been doing singing lessons on RU-vid lol... Got any advice bro?
Who are the 4 people that gave this video a thumbs down?!? I agree with everything Jamal is saying, came up the exact same way. Cleveland, Ohio under Steve Gulley
This is kinda off topic but would you considering buying a 61 key keyboard for practice? Considering the modx6. Don’t have enough for the 88 key version.
Wow Brother I was only 45 minutes away from you up north in *Cleveland.* Sam Ashe Music is the spot now. You was in *Lebron James* country in Akron, OH.
Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise. Psalms 33:3 KJV. Give him your best because he is worthy. "Praise is the avenue that leads us to worship". Inspiration comes from many sources but true anointing only comes from God... prayer, being a doer of the word not just a hearer. We must first make ourselves available to him, he will do the rest, if we desire to glorify him through our gift that's he's given us.
I have a bass guitar, I want to learn the bass guitar and I want to be a professional musician, but I'm 34 yrs of age and I feel like I got a late start. I grew up in church as a drummer self taught. I'm no longer in church, but still have a passion for music! Please, give me some advice brother!
What's your opinion about christian musicians listen secular music to improve your ear and get ideas to play in the Gospel songs? I'm from Brazil and I like so much MPB, Bossa, Jazz etc... But here some church's don't accept that the members listen secular music😢. Thanks! Big hug from Brazil!
