Flower farmer and florist Georgie Newbery of Common Farm Flowers in Somerset shows you how she lifts and stores her dahlia tubers for splitting next year. www.buymeacoffee.com/COMMONFARM
Hands down, you are the best flower farmer on RU-vid, not only you are witty and charming but also your ethical and ecological approach to farming is admirable and much needed. I'm not saying so because we are both brits😳 but it's so true. (A British lady living in the mountains in central Italy alone, growing my food, keeping chickens, sheep, forging, living on very little money but the healthiest and happiest I've ever been. Though I miss England at this time of the year.😖 all the best and keep inspiring beautiful lady. Hugs and purrs🌻💚💕😚
, during my covid week 🤕🤒🤮Just found your channel and you’ve kept me amused and learnt lots of helpful information I’ve subscribed hit the notification button but cannotfind this coffee thingy lol so happy to buy you a luxury coffee with a dash of tia Maria and a large dollop of cream enjoy . Joanne x
Lol - I need to learn how to have it more obvious but the coffee link is in the written blurb to each clip and in my bio - so pleased to give you something to take your mind off illness - get better soon xxx
I love that you also refer to nonhuman animals as people. 😊 We've never lifted ours, they just stay in the troughs all winter and seem happy. Mind you, I think this winter is forecast to be colder than average so that might affect them. 😊
Love your vids Georgie, you are an inspiration! I can’t bare to do mine yet lol 😂 I’m even thinking of mulching and just seeing if they survive? Worth a go I guess lol 😆
Thanks for the slug lecture, I don't understand the need for people to kill them, they feed birds in the spring and the birds do other important jobs in the garden, including spot fertilizing.
I don't lift my dahlias except every few years, but I do stop the irrigation and tarp over them to keep the rain to a minimum. When I want to split them, I do lift them and wash the soil off of them, let them dry and mark each one with permanent marker. I was quite surprised that you don't wash the dirt off or trim the roots off the tubers so they take less room. Is there a reason for this? You are quite delightful to watch and your garden is gorgeous.
Luckily I have lots of room to store and they seem to store well in their earth - and it’s a busy time of year so it’s easy to let them dry out in the office while I get on with other jobs xxx
Thank you for this Georgie. I bought some Dahlias for the first time this year. I actually bought them in pots and they are still flowering. I don’t have any where cold enough to keep them in my house. Even my basement is warm. What can I do with them? If I keep them in pots, they may get water logged or freeze over winter. I don’t have a shed, so perhaps that’s something I should consider . I do have those containers where I keep all my garden tools, perhaps they would be ok in there ?? 🌸
