I can't believe this is a small channel. Holy shit your videos are insane. And don't try to lose your accent; it's a symbol of your heritage, and should be worn with pride as your accent crosses over into your other languages. Your accent is even more admirable because your English is extremely proficient. Man I can't wait to learn another language, Subscribed.

losing an accent...... I'm not convinced that this is even beneficial. I mean, if an accent is so powerful that people cannot understand you, then yes....improving that is important however simply having an obvious accent but one which does not prevent people native to the target language from understanding you might not be a good use of time. I actually enjoy hearing people speak english with an accent from another language. I did work with a gentleman from Scotland who spoke english as his primary native language and his accent was so incredibly powerful that I couldn't understand a damned thing he said, while our co-workers from France, Germany, Spain and Italy.....all spoke with varying levels of accent and I could understand them completely. EDIT: I can see where a person who wishes to be a tv news journalist or an actor/actress might wish to put lots of effort into speaking each language in a very convincing accent.....but for regular people, I think time would be better spent on other things.

Hi Santi! Loved this video. Thanks for creating such great content!! ❤️ Your technique of "dabbling >> hardcore learning" seems very practical and realistic! I am going to try it out! ☺️💪 As for me, well, I don't have a plan as such. I just expose myself to the target language(s) as much as possible and keep a journal where I write short, random things in the target language(s). (It could be a movie I watched that day or something new I saw in the supermarket...) I also try to converse with native speakers as much as possible. Well, actually, one thing I do is to set a three/six/twelve month goal to learn a language (depending on the amount of prior exposure to that language)... Let's say Russian. So in those three/six/twelve months, I'd only learn Russian. Once I reach the B1/B2 level, I move on to the next language while constantly using/practicing Russian. I personally find this method very effective! Sounds like a mixture of the direct method, audiolingual method, CLT and immersion, don't you think? 😉 Looking forward to watch your future videos! 😎☺️

Thank you for this useful update. I’m currently studying Chinese and have been studying it for about 4 months. Lately I have been tired and frustrated because of what you say” it’s an alien language”to me. So I have realized that I need to slow down a bit. I will keep in mind your three pieces of advice. Maybe I’ll be more efficient. I already speak English, French and Norwegian ( the latter being my mod tongue), I also know German fairly well, but I hardly never use it. The most difficult language is Arabic . So many persons they will ask why and they will say Chinese language is more difficult why Arabic because we have 22 Arabic countrys and each one has a different accent and inside each country have so many different accents and many different dialogue and so many means for one word for example More than 1200 words mean lion. Question: What are you doing your PhD in? I didn't know that you were doing a PhD. As a grad student, I don't know how you have so much free time to learn languages. I barely have the time and I'm only working on my MSc. I'm trying to work on my Portuguese, Italian, and German the most. Those are the languages I'm most interested in working on for now. My Spanish is eh, but once I get my Portuguese and Italian under control, I'll be able to speak/understand my Spanish better again. I lived in Florida for 8 years and my best friend's parents didn't speak English, so I had to learn Spanish to communicate with them. Let's just say that my Spanish is pretty basic still. After Portuguese, Italian, and German (which I speak at probably around a B1 level because of formal education), I need to learn Vietnamese. Dating someone from Vietnam has made me want to learn the language to better express my love for them and show how dedicated I am to keeping our relationship alive even though they speak English. Finally, my ultimate goals are to learn Arabic, Greek, Russian, and potentially Farsi (all for no specific reason other than they seem fun to learn and surprise people with).
@santiglot

Hey man, I started learning 普通话 March 1st and i must say its an amazing language! I also want to learn Cantonese in the future. I have a question for when you started to studying Mandarin, Did you focus on Hanzi first or did you just learn thru the latin alphabet first then the hanzi? And if you have any advice it would greatly be appreciated! Many thanks :)
@santiglot

Pinyin is for learning how to pronounce things and for typing characters. It is very important you learn to read and (at least) type characters on a computer. Writing by hand is not that important if you are not going to do that. But yea, pinyin is a crutch and you shouldn't become dependent on it.

Hey, would you also be considering learning a second Slavic language after you get Russian, like Polish? And also, what's the hardest thing for you in Russian? Thanks for a great video!
@santiglot
@santiglot 3 года назад
Thanks! Yes, that' sort of the plan... however Idk with other Slavic language I will be interested in, maybe Polish who knows, after all it's the second Slavic language I'm more familiar with. The hardest thing for me so far is writting and typing in Russian. Russian script is not 100% phonetic, so I have to get used to that.
