Congratulations on your new teaching career! I'm so excited for you! I am a retired teacher and taught for 39 years before retirement. Most of my career was spent teaching Kindergarten, and a few years teaching 1st and 2nd. I also served as a mentor teacher and had many interns complete their student teaching with me. It is so refreshing to see your enthusiasm and preparation. I always went into "teacher mode" about 3 weeks before school started and all of your prepping brings back so many memories. It is good to be organized before going back to school because you'll find there is actually very little time to get the classroom set up, decorated and materials prepared during the work days because there are many faculty meetings, grade group meetings, etc. It will be very overwhelming. But, remember that the beginning and the end of the school year are the most stressful times of the year. Over the years I had to learn to pace myself to get everything accomplished before the kids arrived. It seems like you are already doing that, so you're learning that early! I would teach the basic rules and routines during the first day, as they came up. Initially, I would go over the class rules, bathroom routines, etc. I would then teach other things as they came up, such as hallway behavior, as we were getting ready to leave the classroom; cafeteria expectations as we were going to lunch; and end of day before dismissal, etc. You also want to discuss fire drill procedures sometime during the first day, as usually they will have a fire drill during the first few weeks of school. However, your 4th graders will be familiar with many of those routines because they've been to school before. (It was always a nightmare for me because my little kdg. kids were in LaLa Land and didn't know how to follow the teacher or have any idea where they were going. Many times they would follow a different teacher. So, it's always good to take a class list with you to make sure every one is accounted for.) It is always better to be over prepared. But, don't be surprised if you don't get to everything you planned. They will be given a lot of school information to take home the first day, from you and the administration. Many of the things will need to be signed and returned. I found it helpful to have a "Parent Communication"' folder for each child. I would have them put everything I had for their parents in that folder part of their morning routine would be to take out their folder to give me anything their parents put back in there. Sometimes, parents would write me notes and I would find them in the folder. I had to walk around and look in each child's folder because it took a while to train them. But, again, your students have an advantage because they are more mature. Your lesson planning will be easy once the year begins. Where I taught, the district had Pacing Guides we needed to followed , so it was spelled out exactly what we were covering each week, day by day. I know you are going to LOVE your job. But, it will be A LOT of work. So, don't get discouraged if you feel overwhelmed and also remember to not let it consume your life. It is important to take time to enjoy your private life, as well. Have a wonderful opening of school and school year. Your students are so lucky that they will have such a creative, enthusiastic and dedicated teacher greeting them and working with them throughout the year.

As a ninth-year 4th grade teacher, I definitely recommend teaching procedures as you go! I always start with a just a couple of important procedures on the first day (bathroom, fire drills, etc.) and then I introduce the rest and have them practice as we go. Before I start teaching content, I purposefully plan activities during the first week that will allow me to naturally introduce and give them practice with our procedures. Your first day activities sound amazing! You’re going to be awesome!

You could also make a list of activities that require talking or socialization and those that require little or no noise to do. I would purchase a timer so that you can give the students a set amount of time to complete activities. This will help them with time management over the academic year and with developing good work habits.

I really like this video! I also am entering my first year as an educator! I’ll be teaching 5th grade ELAR/ Social Studies. I have been thinking on how I’ll set up my classroom & colors/ theme I want to use. And next Thursday I’ll be able to see my room as well as begin training. Best of luck to you as you enter your first year, I can wait to learn and grow and continue to watch your journey as well. 😊💕

It’s good to overplay for the first week. More than likely you want get to all of it but just in case you need a filler or two, it will save you. Also just know that every year you will change the way you do some things. You will be learning along with your students to figure out what works and what doesn’t. You’ve got this! I’m a second year teacher and I feel even more confident going into my second year but definitely going to change some things but now I have good foundation of what works/didn’t work!!

With the promises you were talking about, you could also read I Promise by Lebron James. They get excited that it’s written by him. Also, plan on them bringing supplies and how to organize those, unless they bring them on meet the teacher. - 2nd year teacher. Everything looks great. I have definitely been avoiding prep 😭 I feel you with the stress and anxiety!

Here's an answer about procedures: Children remember what they SEE more than what is said (they won't HEAR everything you will be saying), so model model model...it's why these first days are SO exhausting! Good luck!
