It is a great idea to put the chapter notes at the top of each chapter. I’ve always kept them in a separate doc and had to switch back and forth.

That's why I started doing it this way-I hated switching so much haha

This was fun to watch! I'm actually doing almost the same thing. I write notes on google docs on my phone whenever I get an idea/when I'm reading through, and then copypaste it to wherever it needs to be in the actual manuscript (still use word for that). Mostly to the top of the chapter, but sometimes highlighted within the text. While I'm writing and I know I have to fix something later, I always write ELEPHANT haha, so that I can search for that word in my manuscript and find the places where something is missing/off^^ For structural things that affects the whole story, I write post-its and place them above my desk so I'll keep it in mind while I write. And that's it! I'm actually getting my third draft of my next book back from my editor this week, so that is going to be fun/scary. I do the same with whatever notes she has, paste them to my chapters and highlight:)

I love seeing a peek into how everyone else's brain works during revision. Good luck with draft 3!

Keep the odd book! Also this is so motivating. I work in waves from beginning to the end and once I become forgetful or get stuck in any sense I go back from beginning so I can never say how many drafts I have gone through. Colouring the draft amount sounds a thing to try as some chapters I end up reworking more than others. Okay I go try this out now! Also looking forward to Glass witch as well as Spirit week, both are October babies :)

awh thank you so much, Emi! And I feel like I'm always adapting my process based on watching others, so this is great to know :)

I'm currently prepping to jump into my first ever revising-a-book-without-rewriting-it-from-scratch attempt, and seeing how you go about this was really useful! Thank you so much for sharing your process!

I revise similarly. I print out the draft and make edits on the page (grammar, spelling etc.) and I write longer notes by page in a notebook. Then I start my next draft on the computer and started adding in all the edits and notes, one chapter at a time.

I love this process! I do a few of these steps, I'm doing a pretty major structural analysis now.

Love to see your process! I always feel so inspired to write after watching your videos. I love making lists and crossing off to-dos sooo much, so that's what I do with writing and revision. It is so totally satisfying to me to make progress through steps like that. I also use Google docs, and girl lemme tell you, that fricken LAG, girl😒 It honestly never crossed my mind to make smaller documents, but I'll definitely do that now lol😆

yes! You've got to separate the acts or else google docs hates you lol And yes checking boxes is my identity too haha

I really enjoyed seeing your process for this! I normally read through and make comments on the bits that need fixing, but I love and think I am totally going to incorporate the broader notes like 'this is a thing that needs more in here' and having that literally in the chapter under chapter X so I don't have to go looking for other notes. I need to be much better about keeping all my notes in one place too... lol one of these days?
@LindsayPuckett
@LindsayPuckett 2 года назад
yes! searching for all your notes is the worst! I just started doing this copy and paste notes at the top thing during TGW edits and it changed the game!

Hey, love your videos! Very informative and helpful! I have one question, and I apologize if it's a stupid one, I'm somewhat of a novice to book writing, I originally studied writing for the screen. I was just wondering how you split up chapters? When you send over your manuscript for queries is it already broken down into chapters, or is that something an editor helps with? I'm working on my first book, which is an idea I've had for about 10 years I don't think it's a best-seller but it's a place to start!....The characters in there have been talking to me since i was a teenager xD Need to get them out!! But I hope to go down a more formal route with future stories, it's just that how tv shows are broken down into epsidoes, and how books are broken down into chapters, don't always equate, so any advice would be so helpful!
@LindsayPuckett
@LindsayPuckett 2 года назад
Hi Blake! :) Yes, you will want your book split up into chapters before querying. There are some awesome RU-vid videos out there that can explain how to do it way better than I could! Best of luck!!!

were there any structural changes that you wanted to do like add a new chapter? i’m on my third draft and things are still changing lol
@LindsayPuckett

Yes! I'm adding two scenes in this new draft. Most of my other structural changes happened during draft 2!

I am struggling through my current writing project once again. Have you any tips to get through some of the struggles?
@LindsayPuckett

I set a timer and make myself work for at least 15 minutes straight. And then if I'm still not flowing, I do another.
