How I Made A Plaid Cutting Board

In this video, I show how I made a plaid cutting board. It's about 20" x 15" x 1.5" and it's made from walnut, ash, cherry, and padauk with end grain walnut and ash strips in between these pieces. There are a lot of glue-ups and it's important to keep everything aligned during each glue-up, but it's pretty straightforward otherwise.
You can find everything else I used in this project at my Amazon storefront at www.amazon.com....

Great looking board. Nice to see you have the grandson with you, But I am concern on how many times you put you hands in harm way of the saw and band saw. Please be carefull. Thank you for shareing your technique.

I really appreciate channels like yours where you're creating beautiful, professional pieces in a shop that seems designed for building things. You obviously have some nice equipment mixed in but it's nice to also see some tools like the Delta miter saw and lunchbox planer in there. Content that focuses on the art of building something rather than one big Festool & Sawstop ad. Love the videos I've learned a lot from you !

Thank you. Yes, I try to be practical when acquiring tools and try not to go overboard with spending. For example, I use my miter saw primarily for rough cutting lumber, so I prioritized space saving vs. precision and that helped keep the cost down.

@@oldhess I spent more than that on my CNC, but worth every penny I spent. Mine also has included a verticle workstation for working on the ends of pieces, and a turning center that does not mount on the table top, but is on the side of table - 10" diameter x 50" long capability.

First time watcher here and that was absolutely breathtaking! Question as a newbie, would it not be safer to use a crosscut sled for the stuff at 13:40 since the longer side would be supported?
@Woodumakeit
@Woodumakeit 2 года назад
That's a good question. It might be a little safer to use a crosscut sled, but using the fence made it easier for me to adjust the exact position of each cut. It's still pretty safe as long as you're careful about how you push the piece when cutting.

Question, I have seen other woodworkers when they are making their end grain cutting boards that during the sanding process they spray the board with water and let it dry before the next grit. Have you done this? And if so did you find that it helped with the end result or did it make no difference?

Man, you sure need to rethink how you use your hands to feed the material through that planer. So, so dangerous.

Interesting piece. Only comments are maybe I will make one some day, but a lot of work. Probably a better gift than some thing to try to market. Also, for a finish for them, walnut oil is far better than mineral oil because after penetrating, it actually cures and hardens. Mineral oil never cures. There are a couple of brands made for wood bowls. Dr's Wood shop is one, Mike Mahoney's is another. Store bought walnut oil in the salad section isn't the same thing, some of it cures, some doesn't. The walnut oils are heat treated to break up the proteins that can cause nut allergies.

OMG!! Obviously up to this this point in time you've never had kick back when using the planer. Me neither, but it can happen. I was shocked to see the little fellow standing in the line of fire. I stand to the side. Anyway, the results are gorgeous, and no, I don't think I will attempt. The thicknesses used are too much for my arsenal of tools. If there is a way to make "sandwiches" of species like walnut/maple/walnut instead of ripping at 21mm then maybe, but my imagination doesn't allow me to envision how things need to go together to make that happen.

Very attractive board but it sure would have been nice if you had mentioned early on that regardless of the size of board you're making you always need to have an odd number of rows and columns for the wide and length. Otherwise you end up with an asymmetrical plaid pattern when you add the thin 1/8" strips. Extremely difficult to remedy. 😩

I'm saving for a larger shed that I can turn into a shop, then my next purchase will be a sawstop. I'm just looking to have a small shop, though. I own a lot of hand tools, but as it is now, the only tools I have that I saw you use were the miter saw and random orbital sander. I can't do everything you're doing, but I love watching the process as you do it.

Sawstop is a great tablesaw. Save your fingers by being careful and safety aware whenever you work with tools that have sharp edges. Spend the money you save on not getting the Sawstop on a good drum sander. Woodworking involves a LOT of sanding! Best of luck.
