This is such a helpful video Laura and such a great idea. I started out with the foam mat but often ended up with chunks of it in my projects if I went too stab happy. I tried the wool buddy which is great but overpriced and overrated in my humble opinion. I wish I’d seen your video before buying it. I love your simple, unfussy and very practical approach to felting. No need for expensive wet felting kits that charge ‘silly’ money for ‘special’ soap and bubble wrap and other unnecessary products. Your kits are superb quality and the amount of wool is very generous. I like that your kits come in a cute gift bag instead of you having to pass the price of costly packaging (which is going to end up in the recycling bin) onto your customers. Your needles are the best I’ve ever used and I’m so happy with the lovely pink wooden needle holder I bought from you. Thanks so much for sharing. 💕💕 ~Leyla

Excellent tutorial, thank you. I have been using a wool mat for over a year and thought I'd make my own now.

Very nice, I like your method of needle felting first. I will wrap mine before I put it in the wash, I think. I'm new to felting and would probably end up with a pile :). Thank you very much for sharing.

This is a great video. Thank-you. Can you tell me more about the top wool? Is it a colored carded/core wool, I ask because it doesn’t look like the finer top coats.

@@pammipayne3334 Sarafina is great! I also love "Felts by Philippa" she has easy tutorials as well. She also has a beginner playlist where she explains needles, wools and tools etc. I learned a lot from her! "Living Felt" are also worth checking out. Those are the ones from the top of my head, but if you browse YT for a bit you will get other great suggestions! Enjoy felting!

very helpful video! i have 2 questions that you can hopefully answer 1. i've never wet felted before, so are there any other quicker ways to dry it besides air? 2. Is there any way to felt a design onto the mat such as an animal? If so, what stage do you do it?

*just a watcher that loves felting, but I hope I can help! I think you’d like to let it air dry, just so it doesn’t shrink with the warmth. Maybe a cold setting hair dryer can speed it out a little but not so much that it is worth the time. Just make sure you have some of your old felting foams before you make this, and get rid/put them aside just after the cushion is ready for felting and fully dry. 2 of of course there is! Look up 2D felting! I’d probably wait until after the wet felting and needle felt it, but I think there are people who wet felt 2D pictures. Use the method you feel comfortable with!

@@GuyG.KTalesOfAnimals Not sure about the dry felting after the fact. I think it might cause fibres to be worked into what you are felting on the mat. But I don't have experience with wool mats or wet felting as of yet. Gonna try do a felting mat like this, soon, though since my current foam mat is slowly dying. I got cheap sponges to try but they didn't even hold a day without getting serious dents :(

Look at fuzzywuzzie on eBay. You can buy 1kg of core wool for just over £20. It’s carded too
@YunaElphabaLovegood
@YunaElphabaLovegood 2 года назад
I'd say the core wool is a carded one, the colourful one is a roving (hope that's how you spell it) or tops.
@toastydrake

Thank you for this! Just wanted to ask, Can I just use core wool to make the mat or does it need a top layer of roving?

are you a Felter? If you are then you will know that you have to keep lifting your work so it doesn’t stick. If you’re not, I suggest you look at the aspects of it before criticising. The main layers of wool are core and that is quite cheap because it is still quite raw, only washed once and can be purchased in large amounts easily. The top layer was more expensive wool which had been carded so it quite easily could have been odds and ends and cost nothing. They were very pretty. These mats range in size and are priced accordingly, Making your own under many circumstances would be cheaper and also satisfying. You can always buy something but making it is an art and is an art worthy of the learning.
