This week we tackle odd jobs around my 1989 Toyota Pickup that I have been putting off for a while. How to replace Tie Rods, Front Wheel Bearings, and Rear Wheel Bearings WITHOUT a press! And find some surprise parts I also needed to replace. What can I say? I said this truck was neglected while building our 1996 Toyota 4Runner!

Your brake woes remind me of when I rebuilt them on my Old Dodge Ram. I replaced everything (front rotors, pads, rear drums, rear pads, wheel cylinders, springs, bearings all around). Adjusted everything and went for a test drive/seat the pads and I could barely stop. I was pretty new working on it and got freaked out so I sent it to a shop. They found that my original front calipers, master cylinder and brake booster were all bad. An unexpected $900 later and I had ALL new brakes. :-D

I use 2 pieces of C-channel (but angle iron would work just as good) 27 inches long with a hole drilled in the center. then I take them and bolt them on the wheel hubs when it's on jack stands and I set my alignment with 2 tape measures, one on the front and one on the back. i set it to 1/16" toe in over the 27 inches. it gets it as close as a proper alignment machine can, if not a tiny bit better. I can drive my Toyota on the freeway with 2 fingers on the steering wheel and it tracks true as an arrow 😁 I figured I'd pass that info on, it's worked very well for me... keep up the awesome videos man!

Hot tip for replacing wheel bearings: When knocking out the outer race and knocking in the inner race sit the wheel hub in and old rim to protect the threads on the studs. Great video too. Maintence is so often overlooked! Never forget the rear wheel bearings either.

For me, the Bilstein's that come with every solid axle kit felt like they were too soft. I think if I didn't switch platforms to the 80, I would try the Fox shocks. I buy full drum rebuild kits when I do the rear brakes because as you mentioned, everything else starts looking crusty and old once you get the drum off. Great video Clinton!

I really like the Rancho 9000's. They emailed me back a spreadsheet to help me get the right ends and shock length which is super cool, and they are compression adjustable. I fit 14in front and rear with the LROR shock towers, and the damping can be adjusted from a nice stiff DD to way to soft (hit my bump stops) off road comfy. I know everyone seems to want 14in shocks, but I don't think the SKY Offroad kit offers more than 8-10in articulation anyways so i recommend getting the 12in Rancho's. Pretty cheap too. If you don't want those, get FOAs and tune the valving manually.

its like 5 wires to make it run, it was really easy, took longer to find the right wiring diagrams. I did the 3.4 into a friends 85 pickup aboot 8-9 years ago

Next time remove the retainer off the rear axle shaft by cutting it diagonally with a cut off wheel and strike the groove with a chisel

Probably not! I had disks once, but reverted back to drums. Never saw much benefit, and went drums again to get e-brake functioning again.

what I don't understand about your rear wheel bearing method is it looks like you're just bashing the end of the axle on the concrete? how is that not hurting the splines of the axle?

Concrete is softer than the metal axle shaft. I've never hurt a shaft doing this.

I stopped wasting my time with the store bought stuff after my last Moog set failed prematurely. You can get Sankei 555 parts from Napa though which are made in Japan! That or OEM..

In my experience Moog is the absolute worst. A couple years ago we had a lower balljoint go on our 4Runner less than 2 months after installing. Did a bunch of damage in the process.

You do get for the price of NOT needed front wheel bearings you could by a harbor freight 12 ton press and stop banging your axles on the ground...It hurts me with every blow....

You change your wheel bearings once a year?? Hold my beer...Ive got about 300,000 on second set on my 87; rolls great, no play...just need to repack every 30,000....Currently coming up on 500,000miles and still have some OEM lite bulbs....

I’m shocked you do wheel bearings once a year. I don’t do any hard core wheeling with my ifs 86 4Runner but my wheel bearings are original and still work fine 299k miles

37s and lockers are pretty hard on them! And honestly didn't really even need to be done, the bearings I took out of front where just fine.

@@DirtGarage ok, that’s the size I want to go up to. I found a straight axle but it’s been sitting on a truck in a field for 10 years and they will not go lower then $1500 for the entire truck.

@@vibmx the town I live in is in Washington up by Idaho and Canada and it’s small! 1 buy went around and bought 95% of all the solid axles. Has over 50 of them. I’m young so he tried to get $2000 for just the axle..

Wow really? Tape measures? Thanks tips 🤣 No AC, don't even have power. And because wheel bearings are cheap and 37s and lockers are hard on them.
