I am cutting two walls out of the shipping containers at one end of my shipping container house, so I need to ensure structural rigidity. This video explains the three things I have done to enhance structural integrity. Hope I have done alright. What do you think?

I looked at building a 24 x 36 shipping container shop for woodworking a few years ago. Here is what I found then and after. The floor and corners of the container are the only structural parts. The walls and roof are not. Reinforcing the roof after removing the walls and the cost of three containers ran close to $20,000 without finishing the inside. No power, electricity, or heat. The engineer said I would need .5 X 6 X 6 inch 36 feet long I beams to support the roof. I looked at stick build and as a DIY project. The stick build came in at under $10,000 with concrete pad, power, insulation, heat, and electricity. Later I started teaching construction, and safety was a part of it. This led to becoming an OSHA safety instructor where I learned that maritime containers have some very bad chemicals in them. The wood is full of anti-decay, insecticides, and fire retardants. The paint has anti-corrosion products in it like cadmium that are very toxic and require a respirator if you are exposed to it. So, if you cut, sand, grind, or weld it should be treated just like asbestos. If a building inspector or sub-contractor walks on the floor and kicks up cadmium dust you are by law responsible for their exposure for the next 30 years.

cool, I drew pretty much this exact same thing on paper, except I put arched hoops on as the roof for a clear membrane to make more of a green house style with lots of natural light. nice to see it like that, looks great. Another design I was thinking about was just a large cut in the ground potentially made by blasting, that also just uses a hoop style roof and uses the ability to catch water to its advantage essentially a reservoir with a raised floor or walkway, or perhaps a hanging pod house, and the rest of the area is used as a hydroponics aquaculture terrarium garden, maybe the roots of plants could be used to stabilize the soil, also koi fish water features etc.

How will it be insulated? Heated metal buildings in a cold climate are quite a challenge. Watched a few fails on RU-vid where they used standard insulation batts and that was a disaster. I would think spray foam is about the only option to seal tight against the walls. Otherwise moist air will find a way and condense inside the walls
@1michiganbuck
@1michiganbuck 6 месяцев назад
Agree, Plan is to install spray foam insulation end of April or May 2024 for all exterior walls--there is just no other way around it. Interior walls will be insulated with those piles of fiberglass stuff.

@@1michiganbuck OK good I figured that's what you would do. The other guy I watched made a barn shape house but used metal roof panels for siding. He put fiberglass right against the metal and half way through the winter found them all mouldy and had to rip it out.

Thank you for watching, first of all. I was gunning to have it all done last year, but missed the timing for sprayfoam, because it needed 70 degree weather. I aim to have it done in the summer. Lots of work ahead, but certainly doable. I will cover all walls inside with fiber glass insulation, but the exterior walls will be buried in sprayfoam from the inside, so there should be no rust issue. Furthermore, Corten steel is what shipping containers are made of, so it is a weathering steeling, meaning the first layer of rust serves as a protective barrier. So, this thing will probably last till some alient invasion occurs and then some.
@Magsonn

@@1michiganbuck you mean outside fiber glass and inside sprayfoam? And why not rock woll? I saw videos that fiber glass will flame eventualy. I didnt see Pioneer ductless model which has „air flow from outside” i just found that „rotenso fresh” has this feature. You are sure that multiple pioneers will do the work in winter? I mean when the humidity rises and fongus will evolve on walls. In Poland I saw many people mount „recuperation system”. I am just curious whats your opinion cause I will do container build too. Thanks :)

Are you going with close cell spray foam with all exterior steel? If not I would research it. No expert, but I would put some everywhere there is steel on the exterior walls, floors and ceiling. Keep up the good work.
@1michiganbuck
@1michiganbuck 6 месяцев назад
Yes, I will use spray foam for all exterior walls and the ceiling. There is no alternative because metal sweat like crazy when exposed in the heat and cold. Interior walls don't sweat, still, I will use fiberglass for sound deadening.

You said you spoke to some engineers about this truss design. Did they just like the concept or did they run calculations for you? I ask because the diagonal braces look quite small which isn't a big deal except that they are in compression and are prone to buckling. For this situation I would suggest squared off pratt truss and a licensed engineer to look at it. Or an easy upgrade would be to strengthen at least first diagonals on each end.
@1michiganbuck
@1michiganbuck 6 месяцев назад
They didn't do any calculations, but they did climb around the area to look at what I did. That includes 2 MIT engineering grads and 2 Michigan engineering grads. Still, I appreciate your input! Diagonally, I am putting a 2x6 there soon, so that will beef it up further. I could weld another tubing to it but I will check with a couple of welders. They saw it and thought it was plenty strong. Thanks for watching.
@setheroo84

Okay, I would suggest they do some calcs for you. I am a structural engineer and I would not say it is adequate without running calculations.

I just did an initial rough tally of the costs and my estimate is about $500,000 to get it all done, including 11 acres of land. Please keep in mind that I do a lot of the work myself and this is a house the eventually will have a 6,000 sf living space, a 4-car garage, a 4,000 sf basement, and a great room that is 40x68 with a 20-foot ceiling. I did build a tiny house with a 20-footer that cost me $10K, but I did all the work pretty much myself, so that was just materials cost. I will do a video on all this because I find it fascinating.

@@1michiganbuckhe doesn’t know what he’s talking about they should just be Brazilian or Asian apitong marine plywood floors it depends on where they came from through the cheaper woods are sprayed with pesticides to keep bugs from nesting Also the walls of a sea can really don’t do much if anything the corners posts and floors are the structure that the reasons the walls are corrugated is so the walls don’t need supports the same principle as wavy brick walls

A stick frame house with a great room spanning 40 feet by 68 feet with a ceiling height of 20 feet will be cost prohibitive and easy to mess up and will be much less structurally robust. It also doesn't lend itself to do-it-yourself work unless you are a pro.

@@BryanKirch Good suggestion. I really should make a video about that. I bought the containers 4 years ago when they were cheap, so I bought these high cubes for an average of $2,200 each. Wondering if you are keeping a dollar tally of the entire project so far? It really does not matter because the prices will vary with who will answer someone’s quote, area, location and time. But for shits and giggles. Of course estimate the month and month and month… of your labor rate. Not that this has anything to do with the actual dollars. But it will be interesting to see what the town will assess the taxes to be. I have to say you must have a like-able character or very lucky to have such luck finding honest capable professionals working with you. ✌️

I think the cost question is a good one. You can make a house with one or two container for cheap, for sure, but my project is pretty big, so the cost is high for the unique structure I have. I do a lot of the work myself, epecially expensive metal work and welds, but still it is going to be about $500,000 when it completed in the summer. To build a stick frame house like mine, it would be quite more expensive. I am eager to find out what the town will value the house at. Stay tuned.

Good question. I worked hard to get the city's permit with a thick deck, including a picture of hurricane damages in the Caribbeans, where everything was flatten except shipping containers. They were sold after they saw that picture and calculations about the building weight the steel ridigity. They are actively working with me to make sure everything is up to code. Not surprising they do that, because there are literally tens of thousands of container houses in the country now. As for home owners association, I own my 11 acres in the woods, so, as Napoleon would say, "Je suis la putain d'association de propriétaires."

I like what you did. Haven't seen anyone anywhere do anything like it. Very slick. I'm not gonna spend 40 grand on an architect to draw up snow loads and load bearing wall stresses. Where I'm thinking of building they all squawk about every cut you make destroys the container structural integrity and want it all recalculated.

@@artkarr9702 Fully understand your concerns. I am luck in many ways. I did the design myself (I have a video on that at my channel if you look) and did my snow load and container weight calculations myself, so in the end I only spent $2K to get an architect to pretty it up and put his name on it.
