Peter McKinnon I love having a rough idea and then let my work flow. I will be uploading a similar video in the next few weeks of my work flow - you should check it out🤘 but personally for a travel vlog I always try to stick to start middle and end with the same narrative of getting somewhere or achieving something within the vlog.

Peter... I am a newly retired/disabled 57 year old looking for my golden hour. I just learned who you are today and I have binged watched a couple hours of your content. Unbelievable!!! TY for being here... lol I got a Dog, a GoPro, a DJI Phantom, and a old RV and I have learned more today than in the last year of screwing around. I laughed when you posed the question of what is my film making process... LOL, I still have trouble finding the footage I just downloaded never mind the editing... There is a lot to learn with my new hobby and I'm glad I stumbled onto you...

Hey Peter! Little time saver for you! If you drag your folders from finder into your project panel, it will automatically create bins with the names of the folders and keep all the files inside their corresponding bin. It’s not much but it will save you 20-30 seconds of bin creation and naming on each project. Great video! Thanks for the insight!

My filmmaking process: Step 1 - Have an ideas Step 2- Procrastinate on the idea for at least two to three months until i give my self the “Don’t let your dreams be dreams” pep talk Step 3 - shoot and edit the project, realize I over stepped my actual skill Step 4- Cry Step 5- upload and share and wait for people to lie to me by telling me it’s good thus giving me pseudo confidence to move on tot the next project.

3 things I thought were extra steps were 1. Creating a folder for each camera, than making another folder in premiere. Rather than dragging the full folder into premiere. 2. Placing an adjustment layer over your clips and color correcting that, instead of copying and pasting the effect to every clip 3. Right clicking the 4K clips and selecting fill frame to adjust the size rather than changing it to 50% I find these minor things but speeds up the editing process. Informative stuff as always tho!

Here is my process for my vlogs: 1. Plan something exciting that I feel is worth vlogging. 2. Watch a Peter McKinnon video for inspiration. 3. Plan my intro (what I am going to say, how I will introduce myself and the content for the video). 4. Plan what camera transitions I will use in my shots that I cannot edit in premiere. 5. Because vlogs are spontaneous and one cannot fully plan what will happen in a day, I just do my thing and capture what I feel is interesting. 6. Close the video out. 7. Import everything into premiere and EDIT. 8. Record my music (a capella) transitions I use sometimes on my BOSS RC-300 looper. 9. Make a relevant thumbnail in photoshop and make it cohesive and similar in style to my other thumbnails. 10. Upload and promote on various social media.

1. Tip, if u drop your folders with footage to Premiere, 0the program upload it as a bin. 2. Tip, if u add any effets to Adjustment layer, You can just stretch it to cover every clip, and also You can switch off/on effets to all clips at once. I Hope this will be helpfull to You.

I think he does it to give more dimension to his face. It adds a more artistic/glamour look. I'm not really sure, but I do know it looks much more appealing than a head up light to his face.
@missioncreekstyle3814

Basic lighting technique: Key Light, Fill Light, Back Light for your subject. "Practical" lights the background. Key Light is the strongest light. Fill Light can be about half that strength, or less depending on how dramatic you want to model the talent. An alternative is to use a bounce card/white foamcore/white painted wall to take the place of a fill light. Peter appears to use no fill in this video, but I've seen him talk about using bounced light before. A light behind talent can add a rim of light around the head and shoulders. It is only around 25% strength of the Key Light. Use smaller fixtures to light up the background, as Pete showed you. Good Luck!!

I would love to know what kind of things you put in your journal-like, how you go from an idea for a video to actual shooting. How do you decide on your B roll shots, do you shoot them before or after your main content? I’m so curious about that part of making a video because I’m so new, and just don’t know where to start. I get ideas, but, I haven’t figured out how to make them reality with all of the fabulous extras, such as B roll. It would be really awesome to know how you get from your journal to the setup for filming.

Save a quick second by importing at the folder level, instead of the clip level of your footage an Premiere will auto create new bins with the same name as the folder. 🙏🏻

Hey Peter, really minimal tip but take the project folders you have with all of your footage and drag and drop them into Premiere and it will automatically make those bins for you. Might save you 10-15 seconds but over time it will save you a lot of time :) especially on bigger projects with more cameras, bins, etc. Also Peter, another tip on 4k footage on a 1080p timeline. Highlight your clip, right click, click "Set to Frame Size". WAAAAYYY easier than scaling in effect controls. :)

Very cool, thanks for sharing! A few tips time saving tips from a fellow filmer/editor: - You can drag and drop the whole footage folders in PP, in stead of just the files (this way you skip creating a folder in the Project Panel, but if you probably still have to create a few Bins in there, and the shortcuts for it is Ctrl+B/Cmd+B - You can create a keyboard shortcut for Scale to frame size in stead of changing the clip's size to 50% - You can also create a keyboard shortcut for Paste Atrributes, in stead of right clicking and going up there in the menu - Another option for color correcting is also to use an adjustment layer if many clips are with the same/similar exposure. Keep up the good work, and thanks for sharing!

Follow up tip! Choose set to frame size instead of scale to frame size if you want to keep the quality of the original clip and have the scale set to whatever will fit (IE: 4k down to 1080p with scale at 50%). What scale to frame size does is down sample the footage to fit the size (IE: 4k clip is now a 1080p clip at 100% scale). I would personally say to use proxies in combination with scale to frame size to get the best results if you don't have a workstation computer. Thank you for the tip Lyubo!

I love the workflow. I making gaming how to videos so having a clear picture in my mind before recording helps save a ton of time. I batch everything as much as I can. I will spend 2-3 hours recording one night which will be for 3-4 different videos. I will stop and start the recordings so they are in different files. Next day I will cut all the videos down to the most important stuff- I think of it like using a hatchet Third day I will start doing audio for each of the videos and will typically shorten the clips that I had cut earlier. I want to give the most relevant info without too much extra filler while still having fun. I let videos render while I am sleeping or at work and then will up load one video ever 2nd or 3rd day. The batch editing ends up saving a TON of time in the set up and tear down and figuring out process. I don't have a lot of extra time for youtube and making videos after a full day of work and 2 kids so I do a lot of this at night when it is late. I literally record audio in a walk in closet with blankets on the tile floor to avoid the echo. Its all in the name of making great videos!

Wow! What a great vid. I am just about to start my own channel and information like this is so important for me. I would love to see a "How I make a video" version on a full episode, where you actually go out for the day, meeting someone or buying something, you know what I mean. The painful, drop a camera inside, go outside, then come back inside and walk up to or past the camera process. Keep it up PM, so very inspired by your skill and captivating personality.

I'm just getting started, hope to have the first vid out next week. I use a notebook when I'm not home for notes and ideas (like you I have LOTS of ideas - 40 pages and growing). At home, I open a notepad (Windows text editor) or Wordpad. I start the text file with "what is this video about', move to 'what will I need, then do an outline, then rewrites of the outline, then write the script, which I won't follow word for word, then shoot the video. Since I haven't done editing yet, I'm hoping for simple edits at first. Thanks to what I'm learning from you, I'm shooting, or conscious of when I need more, B roll. Thanks so much for your great vids. Just an ol' guy getting started. The main goal is to do as much DIY as possible on a -$100 equipment budget. lol. First vid is camera fix tut.

For the 4k clips dragged into 1080p, just right click and “scale to framesize” or sumn like that. You’ll save a few seconds :)

Actually scale and set to frame size function differently and can distort footage. His way assures that it doesn't. I personally haven't seen any issues using scale to frame size as that's what I do personally, but I've been told that it occasionally doesn't function properly.

Why don't you use adjustment layers? What about sound editing? What about tweaking export settings such as "render maximum quality"?
@Azr0HD
@Azr0HD 6 лет назад
He didn't go over everything because it would've been quite long. But I noticed in some of his other tutorials he talked about sound and exporting etc. Although, it would be really, really cool to see a long video showing the recording and the entire editing process. I might actually do something like that in several years when I actually know how to use Adobe lmao
@BromlowFamily
@BromlowFamily 6 лет назад
Yeah but adding all of the color grading to an adjustment layer and then naming them for each camera and then dragging over would have been way easier then applying to each, even though it was a copy and paste attribute. Just saying.
@madmarty2892
@madmarty2892 6 лет назад
Bradley Bromlow yeah, but this is the guy who makes bins that are the same as his footage folders instead just dragging in the folders and letting premiere make the bins for him lol
@LuftdroneDk
@LuftdroneDk 6 лет назад
I was going to mention adjustment layers too, much easier when you have multiple clips from the same camera spread across the timeline (copy-past a new layer) :)
@ConnorLipke
@ConnorLipke 6 лет назад
Short answer: not every shot is lit the same nor is the color balance always the same. It's easier to adjust it on one clip, then copy and paste the attributes and then editing them all to look similar. Using an adjustment layer may be easier but it tends to not work well if your clips were shot in different environments.
