Peter McKinnon I love having a rough idea and then let my work flow. I will be uploading a similar video in the next few weeks of my work flow - you should check it out🤘 but personally for a travel vlog I always try to stick to start middle and end with the same narrative of getting somewhere or achieving something within the vlog.

Hey Peter! Little time saver for you! If you drag your folders from finder into your project panel, it will automatically create bins with the names of the folders and keep all the files inside their corresponding bin. It’s not much but it will save you 20-30 seconds of bin creation and naming on each project. Great video! Thanks for the insight!

Peter... I am a newly retired/disabled 57 year old looking for my golden hour. I just learned who you are today and I have binged watched a couple hours of your content. Unbelievable!!! TY for being here... lol I got a Dog, a GoPro, a DJI Phantom, and a old RV and I have learned more today than in the last year of screwing around. I laughed when you posed the question of what is my film making process... LOL, I still have trouble finding the footage I just downloaded never mind the editing... There is a lot to learn with my new hobby and I'm glad I stumbled onto you...

I'm very new to video...as in months after purchasing the A6500 which has motivated me to learn everything I can after decades of still-only photography. A month ago I didn't even know what B-Roll or S-LOG was. I stumbled on one of your other videos and subscribed. After watching this I feel like I should be paying a tuition or worskshop fee lol. I was wondering why you only light up one side of your face and not the other?? I actually never thought about it until watching this video but yeah you're setup is awesome!! I think he does it to give more dimension to his face. It adds a more artistic/glamour look. I'm not really sure, but I do know it looks much more appealing than a head up light to his face.
@missioncreekstyle3814
@missioncreekstyle3814 6 лет назад
Basic lighting technique: Key Light, Fill Light, Back Light for your subject. "Practical" lights the background. Key Light is the strongest light. Fill Light can be about half that strength, or less depending on how dramatic you want to model the talent. An alternative is to use a bounce card/white foamcore/white painted wall to take the place of a fill light. Peter appears to use no fill in this video, but I've seen him talk about using bounced light before. A light behind talent can add a rim of light around the head and shoulders. It is only around 25% strength of the Key Light. Use smaller fixtures to light up the background, as Pete showed you. Good Luck!!

Here is my process for my vlogs: 1. Plan something exciting that I feel is worth vlogging. 2. Watch a Peter McKinnon video for inspiration. 3. Plan my intro (what I am going to say, how I will introduce myself and the content for the video). 4. Plan what camera transitions I will use in my shots that I cannot edit in premiere. 5. Because vlogs are spontaneous and one cannot fully plan what will happen in a day, I just do my thing and capture what I feel is interesting. 6. Close the video out. 7. Import everything into premiere and EDIT. 8. Record my music (a capella) transitions I use sometimes on my BOSS RC-300 looper. 9. Make a relevant thumbnail in photoshop and make it cohesive and similar in style to my other thumbnails. 10. Upload and promote on various social media.

I would love to know what kind of things you put in your journal-like, how you go from an idea for a video to actual shooting. How do you decide on your B roll shots, do you shoot them before or after your main content? I’m so curious about that part of making a video because I’m so new, and just don’t know where to start. I get ideas, but, I haven’t figured out how to make them reality with all of the fabulous extras, such as B roll. It would be really awesome to know how you get from your journal to the setup for filming.

Brilliant video. I probably commented on your other videos before I just don't remember.. lol.. just too busy. There are few things which puzzle me. 1) how come we never crossed paths? I've done modeling/acting 17 years in Toronto.. not sure how much you were involved in film industry.. guessing lots... 2) I am a photographer (11 years) and I said that I will NEVER do videography like I said I will NEVER do photography... so I am forced to learned some stuff about it. Your video is whole different level of doing things. Totally professional. I am at the beginning stage. youtuber as well, but not your style, not want to copy your style as I know who I am and I am simply different although we share the same passion for coffee... and we think alike quite bit... All I want to say congrats, Peter. You've done very well for yourself and you should be proud. If I ever bump into you, I'll say hi or I'll just stare from distance pointing finger... "that is the one who made it that incredibly far and he is local too.. Toronto". .

Why don't you use adjustment layers? What about sound editing? What about tweaking export settings such as "render maximum quality"?
@Azr0HD
@Azr0HD 6 лет назад
He didn't go over everything because it would've been quite long. But I noticed in some of his other tutorials he talked about sound and exporting etc. Although, it would be really, really cool to see a long video showing the recording and the entire editing process. I might actually do something like that in several years when I actually know how to use Adobe lmao
@BromlowFamily
@BromlowFamily 6 лет назад
Yeah but adding all of the color grading to an adjustment layer and then naming them for each camera and then dragging over would have been way easier then applying to each, even though it was a copy and paste attribute. Just saying.
@madmarty2892
@madmarty2892 6 лет назад
Bradley Bromlow yeah, but this is the guy who makes bins that are the same as his footage folders instead just dragging in the folders and letting premiere make the bins for him lol
@LuftdroneDk
@LuftdroneDk 6 лет назад
I was going to mention adjustment layers too, much easier when you have multiple clips from the same camera spread across the timeline (copy-past a new layer) :)
@ConnorLipke
@ConnorLipke 6 лет назад
Short answer: not every shot is lit the same nor is the color balance always the same. It's easier to adjust it on one clip, then copy and paste the attributes and then editing them all to look similar. Using an adjustment layer may be easier but it tends to not work well if your clips were shot in different environments.

I love these videos - I'd LOVE to see a come up'ins of Pete... how you got to where you are. I know you've done videos like that in the past but I mean on the business side. What you look at in your RU-vid panel, how you think you got so big so fast, etc... You're an inspiration to guys like me who want to up their video game Pete - Love ya

A little tip to save you about a minute in Premier. Instead of creating each bin in the software and dragging all the clips into them, you can drag and drop the entire folders from your finder into the project panel and Adobe will create those bins for you and fill them with the same clips found in your finder window. I use the same file structure as you to new projects btw, works great. I'm pretty sure this same thing also works with every other editing software although I've never tried it with final cut, I use it all the time in Resolve which is what I switched to from Premier. It's much better for nearly everything, especially color grading even compared to colorista, which is the best color grading plugin for Adobe. It's light years ahead of colorista and colorista is light years ahead of lumetri. It can be a bit of a hassle to switch to when you know one software really well though.

Favourite 2MT! Two tips for saving a few seconds on each project is to use the move function instead of copy when importing your footage from your SD card to your mac (hold down cmd while dragging), and also having a empty preset folder with the file structure you always use!

I work as filmmaker,i make music videoclips.First of all,i get every single video,and put it into premiere pro.Then i select the secuency i want to.Then i plug in the music into the proyect,and then i get the videos with most action,then i make it fit in with the music,every single one of them.Then i hit the no visible bottom,with all the clips except one,and start by second 1 to the end getting the most beautifull or dope shots.Repeat the same proccess with all the videos,and then i start doing the gooood ediiit.Hope this helps som1!Peter your a beast bro!Learnt alot from you

Nice to see hard work and dedication pay off. Too many talented people out there not getting their due. Cheers man and best of luck in the new year!

Peter, you probably already know this by now (maybe there’s a reason you don’t use this method...) but you can create an adjustment layer in your project, drag it to above your video in the timeline and then drag your Colourista on to the layer rather than the individual colour file. Once done, make your Coloirista adjustments in the same way then you don’t have to copy and paste the settings to each video file, simply drag the adjustment layer to increase the coverage on the timeline. It’s also easier to ‘undo’ or make slight adjustments by cutting the layer for each clip accordingly. I’m not a pro, just something I picked up that increased my workflow efficiency and thought I’d share 😊 Thanks for sharing all your hard work!

Looks great. If I do a podcast, I do it on the bed surrounded by pillows with blanket over the tv and curtains shut to minimize window vibration. I like to try to cut/edit to jump between scenes, so you have a fast feel to the vlog.
