How I Make and Package Sunflower Wax Melts | MO River Soap

Hello everyone! I'm Holly and in this video I'm making our sunflower wax melts. Wax melts are used for home fragrance. Melt the wax in an approved wax melter/warmer and enjoy the fragrance released! This isn't exactly a tutorial but I've added a lot of links below for you. These wax melts will be available at our next release at the end of September. if you really like them that much you could always make a silicone mold of your mold and then the brown part would be indented in. Use the mold you make to create the center and pop it in these molds to fill make the rest. I know your a busy lady, but could be a nice down time project :)

I don’t think you are negative at all. You are voicing an opinion on how the mold performs. With all of your knowledge and experience you should tell the soaping community especially the newbie diapers the “true skinny” on molds or anything else in the soaping world. Keep the videos coming. Can you just brush some brown mica or pigment on the brown part of the flower? Might make it easier and faster.

I was going to suggest the same thing! I work with molds for epoxy and brushing with mica is so fun and easy!

I have done that before on several different projects. I don't get the color payoff and the end result that I prefer.

Instead using liquid color,use metallic powder color. Pour the wax first,once is dry get the metallic brown color with a brush and paint the wax floor. It’s going to come out beautiful.

🙏🙏🙏Video request 🙏🙏🙏Can you do a tutorial on how you use your Adobe monthly subscription to creat your product labels and maybe instructions and labels like that? With your subscription with them for you said roughly 46(or something like that) a month it allows you to use the Adobe products like illustrator and photoshop.

Thank you for the interest! I don't anticipate doing a label video because I actually get pretty frustrated making labels. Haha! I am still working with labels that I designed years ago with just minor changes. I was accustomed to using Photoshop before I started using Adobe Creative Cloud.

@@moriversoap understandable!!🌺🌺 as you can imagine I was asking because I too get extremely frustrated. Opening a new small business that’s one area that’s held me back and I’m down the wire now and the only thing that’s left to do before the store opens is get these darn labels designed and printed. I can’t seem to learn from the many RU-vid tutorials from professionals who just skip over the basics because they assume everyone already knows what to do but I’m left in the dust at square one. I’ve posted adds in local Craigslist for lessons from anyone local who can just teach me so I can get by and get it done, but someone has gone on a flagging extravaganza and I can’t keep any adds up longer then a few hours. It’s something I struggle with and I completely understand why you declined 🌼 people/subscribers/viewers could be, and usually are extra critical of anything creators put out there. What if you just brush the inside part with a nice dark brown sparkly mica? That was as it melts it adds a nice hold sheen to the welted wax and it’ll just be a bit easier too

In my experience, that doesn't work. The mica just picks up with the wax and moves. I've also brushed it on after the fact. In the five years or so that I've been making them, I have tried different ways, and I always come back to this way. It's just my preferred method, even if it is tedious. I always appreciate the brainstorming though!

I just brush on mica powder after the mold sets. You could set the wax on a cup warmer to kept it warm.

Holly if you leave your measuring cup siting on the ring warmer used to set wax melts container on it will keep your wax warm and it won’t solidify! Love watching your videos!

That's a good idea. I used to use the base of a hot plate type wax warmer but now I don't even know where I put those. Haha!

WOW! Those are GORGEOUS!!!!! Sunflowers are quickly becoming my favorite flower. Although I love all flowers, lilies, particularly Stargazer lilies, have always been my favorite. But sunflowers... who doesn't love such a happy flower, right? I'm curious though if these will overflow in a Scentsy brand warmer? Edit, I came up with another question. What all kind of information do you put on your labels?

Thank you! Sunflowers are so beautiful! I don't have any Scentsy warmers so I can't say there. The larger melts like this though usually can be cut in 2-4 pieces. It really depends on the melter, size of room, and scent load preference. I I put name, description of scent, weight, and a general warning.

Thank you! The leaves were actually made from swirled soap that I just cut with a cookie cutter. I usually get the polypropylene bags at Uline or PaperMart.

I was just watching you make your pink sugar cookie wax melts, the comments were turned off, so here I am. I loved those, they were great. All your wax melts look delicious. Do you use candle fragrance or can you also use fragrance that you use for soap ?

Thank you. Every fragrance oil will have different usages. Check the usage rates for each one to know for sure. Many fragrances can be used for both but with different percentages.

I package them fairly soon after making them. The bag holds the fragrance in. We aren't evaporating excess liquid like with soap.

I find the best is to make sure the bottom layer has set up really well. If I pour too soon, I will get some melting.

Thank you! The little bottles are so nice to use with the fine glitters. You should be able to find them at most of the suppliers. Nurture Soap, Be Scented, Mad Micas, etc..

I wouldn't logically use that much wax for a single melt. I would cut it up. However, some people really do like it that strong. That was just a farmhouse style bulb warmer. Even better is a plate warmer.

These melts seems to be really big - how do you actually melt them? Do you slice them in parts and melt some of them?

They are a bit big but it also depends on preference. Some people like a bold scent especially if they have a large space. Otherwise, I suggest cutting them into smaller sizes. Popping them in the microwave for 10 seconds will usually soften them enough to make a nice cut.

How long would that last for? (How many hours of fragrance? Like a candle should have x amount of burn time…)

It really varies per warmer used and how long they are used. For me, I don't really like much scent in my living area so I usually just get it melted and turn it off. So I'm not a great gauge for it. But I have had so much great feedback and often my customers melt them for a couple of days before they switch them out.

The color is perfect, you don't have to regret that it was a little more orange, I think it's perfect, it's deeper and more original, more dynamic. They look gorgeous. If you get paid properly for them, then that’s all good. The whole time I was watching, I was trying to think of a better way. The only way was exactly the way ‘ Ivy blueberry’s sister’ suggested. Great minds eh? Either that or a paintbrush, but that would be messy. I’m in NZ, we just don’t have access easily to the fragrances you get in the US. “Amish Quilt”. I can only imagine. It costs as much to ship as it does to buy anything from the US, and that’s the cheapest option. So it’s expensive. Loved the video. 💕🙃💕

Hi Holly! I love sunflowers too! I have several diffrent types of sunflowers. I have the yellow with dark centers, the red and several others. Have you seen Teddy Bear sunflowers? I grew those this year and they are a shorter type, with several layers of petals with brown centers. They look fuzzy like a teddy bear, they are adorable. Look them up online. Hope you are gaving a wonderful end of summer, beginning of fall. I broke my back several weeks ago trail riding. My mare threw a hissy fit and slammed me on the ground. I did manage to finish a 7 mile ride however. The next day I saw the Dr. and x-rays confirmed my back being broke and a hairline hip fracture. I was told not to ride horseback for 8 weeks, but two weeks later I was back in the saddle, lol! I'm going again next weekend. Yep, I'm fine. I'm a tough old cowgirl, lol! My son-in-law insisted I sell my Quarter Horse mare. He's already given me his mare and will find a replacement for himself. Once men make a decision there's no talking them out of it! Kit was a former rodeo horse that had been badly abused. I had worked with her for a year and in general she is very safe. However, abused animals are always unpredictable and that's why I got hurt. Everything is fine now, which I am very greatful for! Have a wonderful week. Look forward to more videos!

My husband had horses growing up but he's not really 'a horse guy'. Our neighbor has about 10 so I'm hoping she will help guide me when the time comes. 😀

Oh, we just love these🌻🌻🌻🌻- and the little bit of your home garden/animals 🤗 We have a few stems of sunflowers on our kitchen table atm. My husband and I are from Kansas (state flower is the sunflower) and we took a road trip to visit last October (we're in WA now). We got to see the sunflower fields being harvested and it was so cool. Thanks for sharing! We've got some of those red sunflower around our neighborhood and they're definitely a beautiful variety.

I really enjoyed this video it was good idea the sunflowers. I have a lot of mold some similar like the one you used. I'll see if I try this project. I wish you would include the recipe. I just love doing projects at home for myself. I'm an artist my medium is acrylic. But I'm always looking for new project in RU-vid.

Thank you! There is no recipe to share. Once you find the wax you are going to use, it will tell you temperature to work at, fragrance percentage to use, etc.. I put several wax options in the description of the video. My wax is a custom blend so everything is going to be different.

Thank you yes sunflowers. When you put sunflower in bowl to melt as it melted it reminded me as fall comes before sunflowers fade into another season. I've seen a field of sunflowers it's a beautiful site like field of hay or wheat. I can stand on the ridge looking out see field of rolls of hay with trees climbing the other ridge at a distance with the river that runs around large area. With all kinds of wildlife. The colors from spring to fall.

What kind of soy wax are you using? I have that wax from candle science 494 and they discontinued it so I haven't made it for a long time. Do you mix something else with your soy wax or is it a plain soy wax what number of wax are you using.

I use a custom ParaSoy blend. I usually take a base wax blend and tweak it a bit to my liking. I added some wax options in the description of the video.

I’m hoping to learn how to make scoopable wax as well once I find wax for it. My local soap making store doesn’t seem to carry what I need so I may have to order from the US.

have you thought about using a painting brush to do this part of spreading the brown in the center? maybe it would be easier and simpler, you can use those water painting brishes that are made with silicone fibers(i think) so that the hairs dont come out in the liquid wax accidentaly.

What I like about the dropper is that I push out and pull back the wax as I go. The wax solidifies so quickly that I don't think a brush like that would work. But it's worth looking into for sure. Thanks!

I grew up in Kansas, and my mom had giant sunflowers that grew outside her kitchen window. This video makes me a little homesick, and definitely nostalgic. These wax melts are super cute!

You could make it in your home and transport it to your friends. As long as it wasn't left in a hot car it should be fine.

Oh gotcha! Yep, that might be more of a pickle. It will withstand some heat but if you had it sitting out waiting for a USPS pick up or something, it definitely might start melting.

@@thecraftloft I typically ship wax melts year round but it does get a bit iffy when it gets really hot. The melt point is approximately 130 degrees and that is an easy number to reach in shipping...in a hot USPS truck, in a closed mailbox etc.. Arizona just has a whole different thing going because it's hot for way longer. I have a friend in Arizona and most of the time the wax arrives okay, but with actual temps near 120 degrees, there is no chance it won't melt in a mail truck or mailbox during their hot season.

Thanks for doing this video! I’m attempting to make a sunflower soap and was growling at the seed portion of the flower and recalled you making wax melts. So I came back to see how you dealt with the tediousness of the middle part. Looks like you were having to be as tedious! Haha. Thanks for sharing this and sharing your “annoyance” with the sunflowers. It made me feel justified! So many soapers edit Thor videos to make things look way easier than they are and that’s just not reality. So thanks for being real in your videos. You’re so delightful to watch.
