How I Make Custom Leather Hat Patches

I recently had a custom order for some leather hat patches. This was a great opportunity to show the process that I go through when I make them. For this project, I used some Veg Tan leather that the client picked out.
I find that Veg Tan leather usually engraves and cuts the best. I have used a few different types of leather, but this type has produced the best results for me. If you have any questions, let me know!

First thanks for taking the time to post a video and share your experience with us. We all have our own way of doing things for sure. I choose to leave the masking on and perform my etching first (without air assist) followed by vectoring cutting the parts out. I do not like dealing with warping so it’s the last function of my processing. Also, it’s close but not exact when you remove the part and place it back in position to perform your etching. Again, this is just personal preference. Your way works for you so why change it :) Thanks for sharing :)
@MakerExperiment
@MakerExperiment 3 года назад
I do it both ways. It just depends on what is working on a specific leather. This leather was particularly tricky with leaving residue after engraving, even at higher powers. I do agree with you that placement can turn into slight misalignment. All good points. Like you said, we all have our ways and sometimes I even change it up on the fly.

This is so funny. I was just reading a W@H article about a family using a laser to start a business during the shutdown, first making leather patches, then expanding. I came to YT to see if they had a channel and THIS VIDEO was at the top of my timeline! Researching ideas while I wait for my Glowforge. YT algorithms are magic!

Thanks for the effort you put into your videos. You are part of the reason I chose to just purchase an Epilog Fusion Edge - 50 watt. My question is when making the leather patch how did you control the smell of the burning leather so your neighbors aren't bothered.
@MakerExperiment
@MakerExperiment 3 года назад
If you’re exhausting outside, there’s no real way to control the smell. Using a filtration system is really the best way. However, that’s not the cheapest option. That’s awesome that you bought a laser. You’ll love it.

Hello. I wouldnlove to know how to get rid of the soot from the engraving without altering the color of the leather. I tried water but that spread the ash. It highly depends on your budget to be honest for the engraver. What’s your budget? As far as materials, if you want to use a laser the best leather is either leatherette designed for laser or vegetable tan leather.

If you mean the cut line, you need to create an offset path of your design.

@@MakerExperiment Yes the cut line... can you direct me on how to create an offset path with a logo that is disconnected as the one in your video? Or direct me to any online resources that could help?
@MakerExperiment
@MakerExperiment Год назад
@@user-nh5ne5go6c you’ll have to take your logo and make a copy of it. Then copy and paste it directly on top of your artwork. You’ll have to join it all together with Union. Then I think it’s under effect you can choose offset and offset path. You may have to clean up a couple extra pieces but that should get you what you need. I’ll have to look at making a short about it.
