Hey everyone, this is a quick(ish) video explaining how I use Logic's "Drummer" track and software instrument tracks to make drum beats for my original music and covers. This video is for anyone who doesn't want to bother with recording a full drumset or doesn't have the space, equipment, or technical ability to do so- like me! I've had some friends ask how I make my drum tracks so I thought I would do my best to explain some of the work flow.
quick apology for the face cam obstructing some of the logic work screen, I just filmed this using OBS and I didn't realize I was cutting out some of the controls. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer!
If you like this video please like and subscribe, if you want to hear my music you can listen here: jeej.bandcamp.com
Thanks for watching!

This was SO helpful! Kyle and I are friends, too but I just hate the limitations of the automated tracks. I had NO idea those tracks could be moved down to a software instrument track then altered!! Going to go try this now. Thank you! Mind blown.

This video was super helpful for logic drums! Thank you. i never knew you could put them into the software track and then edit from there - exactly what i needed!!!

Life-changing stuff dude, I have recorded two EPs and dozens of half-finished songs programmed with the manual piano roll method and then burned out on it for all the reasons you mentioned - this is so helpful in getting me back in the game.

Hey Jeej! That was THE best for me I'm also a s/songwriter NON drummer.. the only thing I'd ask is when you go down to edit in the bottom right (fills, etc ) please move your pic/camera so we can see what you're doing. Thank you for the lesson and I'll be checking your other videos :)

That was very helpful. I didn't realize you could drag a logic drummer track down into a midi track, thereby making it more editable. Edible !!

Thank you for your explanation of drum stuff for logic! I'm a total beginner of logic and dig your pace for other to learn! Is there any way you could put your facial display in a place that doesn't block what you're showing in Logic Pro? Yer picture was blocking the "controls" parameter you were talking about...thank you sooooo much and I look forward to learning more!

Hi Jeremy, and thank you for this. Very well explained, it's a pleasure to listen to you (and I'm from Italy). Just one tech question about Logic: I can't get to show both the piano keyboard AND the drum names in the piano roll. I'm on the latest version. Any ideas? Thanks again and pleas keep 'em coming! Cheers.

I enjoyed this video. I’m new to Logic. I have a question. I recorded a guitar track on logic and created a drum track just like you did but when I played it the drum beat wasn’t synched with my guitar track. It didn’t immediately match up like yours did? Any ideas what I might be missing?

Hey, I know how to play drums! About 7 years in, I also picked up guitar a couple years ago, but much better at drums. Mainly play a lot of foos, nirvana, grunge stuff, some punk stuff. Soon to be writing my own songs. Would love to collab with someone too, I may not be able to write full songs yet, but I can definitely make drum tracks

If you got the money, you can hire a good drummer and then convert the drum files to MIDI with Logic and replace or layer the kick & snare etc. That way you can get the best of a great natural drum performance and also have more control over the (room) sound. (That's a main problem with online drummers in tight spaces.) Many producers use one shot samples to layer with real drums, the secret is often the layering of drum sounds. (I'm not a drummer, but I always program drums bar by bar... Yeah, it's a lot of work, but copy and paste + slight adjustments are your friend. Drums and vocals are the things worth putting the time in to get a professional sound. I use the CLA extension pack of SSD4 and I also layer the snare with a Toontrack pop/rock extension. I'm still building my personal drum sound, but once you have created one, you can use it as your signature style sound.)

Nice video-- very informative and you have a really cool vibe in your presentation- Question- how do you get the converted midi regions into piano roll with the specific instrument labels to keys? I tried and got generic ones as with third party midi files, even when I dragged them into a Logic Drummer track..

you sound like the FOO and do you mic up amps or DI? or both? also great video
@johnviera3884

You can also convert the drummer track to midi and manipulate the notes you want to change. Then just insert those regions into the mix. Never mind edit: that’s exactly what he did as I kept watching. But he did a shortcut by drag n dropping the drummer region onto a midi track

This system reminds me a lot to the one that garage band has. I think in principle it works the same way except for Logic having way more options to work with and things you can alter.
@JEEJ_MUSIC
@JEEJ_MUSIC 3 года назад
Yes exactly! The GarageBand drummer program is identical save for a few additional controls and a lot more presets on the Logic version. It’s a really great option for recording drums and it’s the reason I’ve stuck with Logic for so long.

How did you record the guitar? Is this a plugin or a real amplifier?
@MitchHaman
@MitchHaman Год назад
Do I have this correct. You make your guitar/bass tracks first then add the drums? Everyone one tells me you need to have a drum track first, then play your instrument to it. Your video is great and you beats are perfect. I can't get my guitars and drummer in sync is the problem I'm having. I don't play drums, just guitar.

What bass settings do you use for like a pop/rock bass in Logic? Great videos btw!👍🏽

It was hard seeing some of your tutoring since your video was right on top of the Logic display. Whoops.

Question: did the drummer track literally just come up like that and go perfectly with the first section at 3:20 or so, via AI I’d presume, or was this one you had already tweaked? Great video, thanks!

How much does the song that your playing influence the guitar you choose to play?
@JEEJ_MUSIC
@JEEJ_MUSIC 3 года назад
Hey Casey! My different guitars have slightly different pickups and hardware on them that makes them sound different, which is how I decide what to use on each song. Sometimes I'll grab a guitar and start a song and realize halfway through it would sound better on a different guitar. Sometimes playing a guitar I haven't used in a while can inspire me to play a little differently as well!
