How I Make More Money As A Doctor In Residency (AND YOU CAN TOO)

How much doctors get paid during residency and how salary works are some of the most frequently asked questions that I get from medical students because they often feel like it can be a difficult topic to talk about with their supervisors and instructors. Previously I made a video breaking down my first pay check as a medical resident and at the end, I told everyone that I would be trying my best to raise that number as much as possible. So today, I'm going to exactly that - lets go over how I make more money than some other medical residents and how most people can also make more money as a doctor in residency. PS. we'll definitely revisit this when I'm staff for more tips on financial literacy if the demand is there :)

Gianluca, I need to tell you that your work here on RU-vid is very inspiring for young aspiring physicians. Any time I feel down or stressed about the process, I always come to your channel to find encouragement and motivation. My best friend is your roommate and tells me all the time how hard you work around the clock. I'm impressed and grateful that you still find the time to upload your videos. Hopefully we'll be colleagues some day.

For anyone reading this, when my wife was applying for Med School(currently in clerkship) she paid a R1 resident somewhere around $60-90/hour for the MMI interview. She may do it again for the CaRMs interview too. This R1 was quite busy with this little online gig I estimate she worked about 10-20 hours a week for about 4 months so that would be about $7200(90*20*4 months). Because she was getting paid directly it was tax free. If this was $7200 after tax money it would be more like $13-14k. Want some info hit me up.

Thanks for sharing Sean - interview mentorship is a great gig for anyone interested. I paid for practice interview sessions when I was a premed as well and thought that they were helpful

I got to agree with your colleagues there are a lot of medical school RU-vidr I have I unsubscribed from. Most of them just echo the same thoughts anyways and complain. If you want to be a happy person maybe take advice from only happy preceptors. That’s what I’ve noticed
@nxtgenmd
@nxtgenmd Год назад
That's a good way to put it my friend :) If the people that you're looking to for advice aren't doing what you would like to do, then you are probably better off finding other mentors 🤙 all the best

very helpful video doc.. i have a q, if you have to spend arround 80 hour\wk in the hospital (arround 12hr\day), how you suppose to find an extra time to do any of the options you mentioned ?

Great question. Wednesdays always finish at 6 PM - that’s our academic day. So I always schedule my teaching for Wednesday nights. Also, call shifts are worked in to your schedule wherever you can place them and usually picking up additional shifts or “moonlighting” will depend on your availability. As for additional work, you can place it weekends or Friday nights. Usually, you get at least 1 day “off” per week. You get to decide how you want to use it. If you decide that you’d rather enjoy the day off, then that’s up to you. As an aside, I’m usually working 50-60 hours per week most weeks. 80+ does happen, but that’s why I don’t get videos out some weeks 😅 good luck

My salary at UCLA year one in surgery was 13,000.00 in 1980. I had no free time, but I loved it. I was in the OR virtually everyday. I never had time for much outside the hospital. I would focus on your experience. It is an invaluable education.

The experience is invaluable for sure - A fun fact to anyone stumbling across this comment though, according to www.amortization.org/inflation/amount.php?amount=13000 , $13,000 in 1980 would be the equivalent of roughly $50,000 today. And at the current conversion of 1.34 for USD to CAD, that translates to about $67,000 CAD. This is about $5000 more than the salary of Canadian 1st year residents. Financial literacy in residency is important curriculum alongside medical practicum

When applying to teach medical students is it competitive to get into?
@nxtgenmd
@nxtgenmd Год назад
Oddly enough - not at all in my experience. Some of my co residents weren't interested in teaching because they felt that it would be a lot of work to take on in first year. I would disagree however - teaching can be enjoyable and helps you to retain a lot of what you learned in med school

The numbers seen here are reflective of Canadian residency programs, but they aren't too different in the US from what I hear. The strategies used are applicable to medical residents anywhere 🤙

have you considered lowering you monetary standards and spending your free time enjoying life?
@nxtgenmd
@nxtgenmd Год назад
No I haven’t. It’s hard to do when you’re faced with the amount of student debt that most of us are in coming out of school - north of 150K in many cases. Then there’s weddings to pay for, a mortgage or rent to keep up with, and I’m hoping to open my own practice at some point. So truthfully, that probably isn’t in the cards for a while. There’s definitely different ways to work and if you’re happy to make less, then that’s a choice people can make. Likewise, students and doctors should feel free to make the other choice as well 🤙 you can enjoy life while working - something I learned and continue to practice coming from a family of immigrants
