wasted a whole bunch of yarn until I found your tutorial and finally got one that stayed put!! great tip on the surgeons knot and tying it in both directions
Thanks for the tip about tying both ways instead of one way so your technically making a + and it will add double securement tightness to the pompom thank you!
Thank you so much for this great video. My daughter and I were getting so frustrated with all of our pom poms falling apart! This is a Total Game Changer! My 11 year old has now been making pom poms all afternoon. :-)
Thank you so much! I have been trying for ages (unsuccessfully) to make a 2 inch pompom for a hat for my baby grandson. Then I found your tutorial! Using my small mobile phone I wrapped 50 times. Perfect. I am so pleased with it. Thank you!
So glad I found this video. Had seen another about making pom poms that don't fall apart, but, they used a store bought pom pom maker which allows you to tie the center part tighter than normal. I was wondering if these pom poms could be made without that particular maker. TYSM for sharing this video with us.
I’m so happy you found my video. I have a few of those store bought pom pom makers. I’ve never enjoyed the way you make a pom pom using them. Not to mention the fact that I’m always misplacing the tool. By using whatever I have on hand I can also change the size of my pom pom. I hope this little tip works for you.
Very helpful, thanks. I usually use two Pringles lids and sandwich my Pom Pom between the lids, a bit like an Oreo ice cream sandwich :). I trim around the lids.. I then turn them and trim again, so that all of the sides have been trimmed quickly and easily. It's just a case of 'sandwich' pressing the lids onto the Pom Poms :) x
@@rsislandcrafts Aw, thank you. Like you say - it's difficult to know when to stop. It makes it much easier. I watched a video where someone just used cardboard discs, but I like the clear Pringles lids because the edge acts like a finger guard :) x
After reading your first comment I remembered seeing someone do It with the cardboard circles. I think I’d prefer the Pringle’s lids too. Less likely to cut into versus the cardboard.
I always double knot mine (didn't know it was called a surgeon's knot) but thanks for the tip of turning the pom pom and re-knotting it again - what a great tip - THANKS :)
Lesley Gilbert I didn’t know either until I started working at a hospital. My Grandfather taught me the knot when I was younger. He was a Navy man and taught me lots of knots that I no longer remember. Thanks for hanging out with me in my craft room!
I know I'm late to this, but THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I've been looking for the perfect way to make a Pom Pom, and this was the easiest and most affordable one I've seen! Thank you sooooo much, I made a HUGE Pom Pom with the book idea, and it worked like a charm! Again, thank you!
I used to make ponpoms with the kids in school and then turn them into animals, I have a book that shows how to combine them. You can also make little ghosts with white yarn and googly eyes.
Trying to find something around here about the width I need to wrap. My hat for my daughter is tight on my head so I hope it fits her. I did the basic chain count for adult.
@@cathyprusinski2420 If you don’t have anything the size you need you can use something a bit larger and trim the pom or cut a couple of pieces of cardboard the size you need.
@@rsislandcrafts I actually used a small paper tablet and it worked perfectly. Unfortunately my hat after following generic instructions for chain length does not fit. To tight.
@@cathyprusinski2420 I’m glad you found something that worked. I’m guessing you crocheted your hat? It sounds like your initial chain was too tight. You could use a larger hook for your chain and then switch to the proper size hook for the rest of the hat. You could also try chaining a bit looser but if you go too loose then you’ll have a weird looking edge on your hat. Or just add more chains for a larger hat. If you used wool to crochet your hat then you might be able to make It a bit larger by blocking It. Otherwise you can find someone with a smaller head to give It to or donate It. Too tight hats make fun hats for teddy bears.
I also stopped making pom poms for the hats I made because they always fell apart too easily, no matter how tightly I tied them. But this cross-cross knotting makes so much sense! Thank you for the great tutorial!
I just made a hat with two pompoms and now I'm half tempted to take them off and make some new ones like this because they'd probably hold up better, haha 😅 I'm almost out of the yarn I used though so maybe I'll wait until they do fall apart before I replace them....still though, great to know about this technique for when I need it in the future, thanks for that. 😊 I dont know why I never thought of trying them on both sides/in both directions, it makes so much sense!
Maybe wait and see what happens. You could always make a me pom pom if needed later. Even if you only have a little of the original yarn left you could add in a complimentary or contrast color and have a two color pom pom.
I have set of those plastic pom pom makers that area supposed to make it easier to make pom poms, but mine are still falling apart. I'm going to try your technique for tying them. I never thought to tie them it both directions.
You can stop them from rolling around by pulling from the center. They stay put & the yarn acts like a dispenser. You won't need a bowl. Nice tutorial!! :)
Very true. Some of my leftovers are already rolled in a ball so getting to the center would be near impossible. My newer scraps are wound with my yarn winder so those can be used as a center pull ball which is very nice. Thank you!
You're very welcome. I have ones that way too that I did before I got my winder. My son gave me mine because he knew I was struggling to ball mine. It's a great tool & I'm very thankful he got it for me. :)
