How I Messed Up During the Best Light

Landscape photography is a challenge, a fun one and a frustrating one. Unfortunately in this video, it was the latter. I had the most glorious light in the north west of Scotland and I couldn't bring it all together in a photograph. I analyse the image on location and talk about why it didn't work.

I love this video! I'm a great believer in learning from mistakes, mostly my own. To see you getting the panic we all feel when we're running out of light was refreshing. Your analysis of what went wrong with the image was really helpful. Superhero photographers on RU-vid get really boring really fast!

You are right that your eyes are lead toward that piece of land, but at the same time I can't help but find myself still staring off into the distance and noticing the beautiful lighting over the mountains. So for me I actually love the image. The mountains in the back almost act as a sort of silent character to the photo. The rocks and the water are the main focus but once you notice the mountains it captures you. I'd be stoked with an image like this. As always Thomas, love your videos :)

I simply like the fact that you have taken us to a spectacular location, probably given us a 'teaser' for the next video and proved that regardless of who we are we can all take good and no so good images technically speaking. Thanks for giving us the 'real world' of landscape photography Tom, well done mate 👍

Really appreciate your thought process and story in this video. I have often been in a situation where I have not left myself enough time before sunset, rushed things, and made lots of silly mistakes with my camera setup. it is very affirming to hear you espouse the importance of time for preparation. Good composition doesn't just magically happen.

Tom, I agree with your comment. In addition to the leading lines in the foreground guiding the eyes towards the left side of the image, warm colors in a photo also attract the eyes. Thus, I am also drawn towards the mountains in the back. I think you did an excellent job (as always). I love the simplicity of this photo!

I can see and understand the imbalance you explained but at the same time it was an image of exactly what was there. Just putting it out there for us to see gives us the opportunity to let our eyes and minds explore a place in time that the majority of us will never have the opportunity to see for ourselves. And again, the image was of exactly what was there so it gives us the chance to stand on those rocks and see it as you did. Thanks for sharing Thomas.

This is a video about me and where I am right now Tom. Your example is exactly what I come away with. I’ve been frustrated for a long time and for me it is a basic element issue, composition. It’s never been more important in this era of floods of photos being produced that it’s so easy to run and gun and accept that that image will do. Thanks for the inspiration. It’s good to see an icon such as yourself show moments of imperfection. That allows us all to aspire to be as dedicated to art as much as you.

I know this was a dud shot for you, but I loved seeing the less than perfect outcome. Watching professionals online, even knowing how much more is going on that never makes it into the vlogs, it often looks like you guys just show up, have a casual walk around and then magically find a killer composition right as the light comes on. I know that's not the case but it is nice to actually see something I'm more familiar with...wandering around, struggling to find a composition, feeling rushed, settling for something that's maybe a little disappointing, but still having a great time. Thanks for sharing as usual.

Tom, if you dig deeper into the composition, you can see that the piece of “black mountains” to the left side of the image where the leading lines are pointing to, actually this same piece points towards the mountains lit by the sunset light at the right. I think it’s an ok image, not a keeper but ok. Of course it could be improved, but that’s just my opinion. Thanks for sharing another great content! Cheers

This was exactly my reaction to the composition and I also think it's an ok image. At the same time I can understand how Thomas is feeling as, no doubt, there was something in the situation that was much better. Take it to another level again and you have to say, Thomas, that you actually nailed it. Yes you were chasing the game after a long drive and came up short on the actual image (maybe). But, by having the mojo to make this video and share your disappointment at the end product you probably had a creative impact greater than if you had focussed 100% on getting, yet another, drop dead wowabulous snap. Kudos and thanks for sharing.

With regards to your image, its a good capture in a beautiful location...and yes, you could have nailed something better if you had more time and didn’t feel rushed, but as you said, you’ve been driving all day! What I really liked is your honesty and the importance of composition and being honest to share this with those that follow you. Great work Tom👍

You could argue, that although the “rules” point you to the left of screen; a moments reflection then takes you to the mountains. Or it could be just an average composition - there shouldn’t ever be a bad one. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

I agree with you, and I'm very happy you discussed it. Failing is a key part of this, and we all fail sometimes. I'm much less accomplished and experienced than you ( 2 1/2 years of landscape photography when work and family permitted) . As I think you mentioned recently, we seem to have all the time in the world - then suddenly we don't. The light goes. Realising this, it's easy to rush things and screw up something - maybe a technical thing ( leaving the wrong thing switched on or off) or as here, something like composition. Incredibly frustrating as the one you miss always promises to be fabulous - if only you hadn't rushed it. We can only benefit from being upfront about this, and from thinking about the why and the how. Then we have a chance of getting it right next time.

Great observations and a source of constant frustration for me when I shoot in Acadia is the rock lines lead the wrong direction! I wonder if after your workshop there, (Acadia) you were frustrated by the same thing. It is a beautiful place but I find it extremely difficult to get a composition where the light and lines are going to work. Really like this type of video where you break down the images, good or bad as it is extremely useful as a teaching tool for us visual learners. Good to see your doing another workshop with Simon as he seems to be a great guy and his work is really good. If it weren't for the giant pond between us I would be looking to get in on that trip.

I think both this video and the eventual photo tell a story about being distracted from the beauty around us. In the B-roll as you were scrambling over the rocks and saying you were going to fall, there were some beautiful rock pools full of sunset, behind you. The photo that you criticised according to the rules of composition was one that others would be grateful to have taken. It's story, to me, is that the rules say you will be drawn to that dark outcrop on the left, but if you follow the rules you will miss the beautiful sunset mountain. The rules are made to be broken if you can break them well., so keep on pushing the boundaries, and thanks for all you do.

Great video with an important lesson for every landscape photographer. The composition should always lead the eye into the image and towards the main subject. Those lines pulled my eye away from the desired focus of the image just like you said. The same thing can happen with brighter spots on the edges of images as well. We don't always have the luxury of time when we are in a spot and the light pops so these things will happen.

Second picture, for me, is an Ok image. My eyes wen't through the image and landed on the mountains. But, it also felt somewhat unbalanced e definitely not a "Thomas Heaton Picture". :) Even your most abstract and "simple" pictures cause some kind of impact/feelings. I don't know how to better describe. And this one doesn't do that. I cannot count how many things I've learned already with you in this channel. Wen't through ALL your videos when I discovered your channel in a couple weeks (maybe ~170videos in 2 or 3 weeks, at the time). Saw all your evolution from the first one until now. My eye went straight to the mountains in the background because they were the brighter part of the image. I found myself ignoring the dark landmass on the left upon the first glimpse of the finished image. For me it had the emotional impact that you were probably looking for when taking the image. Sometimes it is better not to get too analytical and hung up on compositional theory. If the image can solicit an emotional response, it did it's job.

I spent all of last week working in the Skye area. I didnt get much time for photography but a lot of the shots I got were like this, felt rushed and not so well composed. I also found the area was beautiful to look at with the mist on the mountains, but didn't seem to translate so well in photos. For spots to shoot, the road between Kyle of Lochalsh and Inverness, the Loch Ness Road, has some beautiful locations, waterfalls, rivers, lochs and mountains. As I was working, didn't get to shoot this area but was stunning to drive through.

Funny how we read/interpret photos in different ways. Let me explain, with the second photo my eye was first drawn to the big boulder and also the seaweed on the rocks in the bottom left of the photo. So my initial leading line was a diagonal from bottom left, through the big boulder and onto the highlight on the highest mountain in the distance. I didn't even notice the smaller and darker boulder until you mentioned it. Of course I noticed the lines in the rocks to the right, but for some reason they didn't register the dominant leading line for me. To me eye, the boulder and the seaweed are the dominant features in the foreground, but I guess we all see things differently.

Tom, I agree with you on the second image. I immediately felt off balance. But I didn't blame it on the dark lines pointing at the dark mountain. I felt like that big light colored rock was off center in the frame. It was the only real foreground element that grabbed me. So I immediately felt like the tripod should have been to the left a bit and then rotate the lens to the right. This would have aligned the lighter elements of the frame up the middle. But then you may have lost the dark framing on the left edge? Good lesson nonetheless! I think it is awesome that you shared this with us! Thank you!

Right. I really see all you are talking about, which is actually quite educating. It is very hard to say how to make the composition better without actually being there. I really liked the moss (?) at first, but now (esp. after looking at the image from a distance), I keep wondering how it would look if you cut it out, made the image more square. Focus on the balance between light and dark areas, maybe find a place where the rocks and the main body of water are not separated by such a straight line. Anyway, in my experience, the more complex the area, the more it needs scouting. Coastlines like that are really bad this way. So thanks for the video, the light will happen again one day when you will have had more time!

self criticism is something rare, especially on YT. much respect for you and your dedication to art. to me, the man is much more important than the photograph. j.

Agree with your analysis BUT! If I had taken that shot I would be chuffed to bits!

Super educational video Thomas. I looked at that image and thought... Wow...nothing wrong with that! Until you pointed out the compositional flaws. This really gets me thinking about my own work and taking more time on the composition and getting it right.
